As we move into the last hour before dawn we are in serious danger of running out of cars if the rate of attrition doesn't reduce soon. Most teams have been seriously reduced with the MGs having gone completely.
The No. 58 Larbre Competition Chrysler is in for a pit stop with Tiago Monteiro handling the driving duties at present.
The No. 76 PK Sport car gets to go back out.
No. 1 Audi is in for a refuelling stop but no new tyres while the No. 16 car has also been in.
Warnock: "Was that me? I went a little bit off line to be honest. The track's drying but it's deceptive. I went into that corner a little more aggressively than previously and I went off."
There are huge amounts of work being done front and back on the No. 83 Seikel Porsche. It all looks a little desperate although they seem to be putting it back together. There was a lot of gravel when they took it apart too.
The No. 38 Roc Reynard is in for a longish stop too and they seem to be doing something to top up the coolant levels.
We've just seen Dindo Capello in the No. 2 Audi having a lurid moment as he tries to pass a back marker, while his teammate Pescatori waits for his turn.
The No. 30 WR is coming in to the pits. The No. 80 is in for a stop and a driver change. The No. 82 car is in too.
The No. 83 car has lost the GT lead to the No. 77 car and has dropped to 3rd in class.
No. 2 Audi comes in at last and Christian Pescatori gets in. There are intermediates to hand, which they duly change to.
The No. 8 Bentley is in for refuelling but stays on the same tyres.
The remaining Cadillac comes in and pulls into the garage. The bodywork is being removed but Angelelli is getting into the driving seat already - obviously they don't expect this to take very long.
Dr. Ulrich (Audi): "We have now about 5 hours without rain but it's still damp on several areas and we are close to go on slicks but for now we stay on intermediates. We had to change the gearbox on one of the cars because there was a problem with upshifting in 6th gear. We could change it in 6 minutes including fuel and tyres."
The Cadillac is back out of the garage so the optimism was not misplaced although it's still taking time to get it out - it goes out quite late after a small starter problem.
The No. 79 Noel del Bello Porsche has been in and out again quite quickly.
No. 30 WR is in again.
The GTS lead car, the No, 63 Corvette of Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell and Gary Pratt has just stopped and they put the car on slicks. There is a hint of dawn now.
There's a car off on the Mulsanne straight and the driver is throwing bits out of it - it could be No. 30. The Noel de Bello Porsche No. 79 goes off in a fairly big way and lands in the tyre barriers at the pit lane entrance. It will have to be extracted by tractor or at least the assistance of several burly marshals. After some time they get him going again.
The Chrysler of Pedro Lamy is now charging through the field and trying very hard to get up to 4th. No. 14 comes in for a routine stop with Kondo at the wheel, including a driver change. They send Seiji Ara out in the car now.
No. 17 coasts in to the pits with Sebastien Bourdais at the wheel. He stays in and they refuel and change tyres.
The Larbre Competition car has a bit of a spin but Monteiro recovers well.
The 72 Taisan Porsche is in for a pit stop.
Right now it's getting close to 6 am but it looks like daylight is not really going to arrive today. The sky is very dark and the clouds are threatening more rain and probably in very large quantities.
The del Bello car (No. 79) has just staggered in to the pits and been hauled into the garage. The radiator pipes seem to have been torn away and there is quite a lot of damage to that car.
The No. 1 Audi is taking it relatively easily in comparison to the No.2 Audi but they are still very fast and dauntingly far ahead.
The GT leader, No. 77, is in for a routine stop again and Gunnar Jeanette gets in for stint. This is pretty impressive considering how heavily damaged it was earlier in the week.
The No. 6 Cadillac comes in unexpectedly. Max Angelelli is gesticulating wildly and the mechanics take the front off. They work for a few minutes and he goes out again. Apparently he has a radio problem (he can hear them but they can't hear him) and a nasty vibration on the car.
Pedro Lamy in No. 16 is also in for an unscheduled stop but gets out in time to take the 4th place from the Cadillac.
The No. 14 car came in for quite a long time and had the rear lights fixed and the car went out very slowly.
The No. 74 Luc Alphand Porsche dives in for a routine stop and the No. 60 Saleen is in again as well.
The No. 1 Audi comes in for a scheduled stop. They have intermediates ready in case they are needed. Torches are shone under the car, they obviously are not worried by what they see and they send him out without bothering to change the tyres.
