Our Norton PC virus protection is up for renewal soon and rather than pay for another year a little reseach has shown as a customer of Barclays I can get a 12-month version of Kaspersky anti-virus download for free. http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=homefreevi2&site=pfs&value=10152&menu=5137Has anyone else done it and is it any good? Also this may seem like a daft question, but do I have to uninstal the Norton before downloading the Kaspersky or can both be active at the same time.

Hi Rup, I can't comment on Kaspersky. If Barclays are "recommending" it, it can't be that bad. Personally I recommend AVG free edition. I use it an any Windows system I'm responsible for. The real solution is to use a proper OS such as Mac OS X or Linux or BSD. Life without Gates. :-) t.

You MUST delete NIS completely before you even try to install anything else.
There are some good tools available FOC to banish NIS for good.
Lawnmower man is, of course correct, we Mac users do not [yet] need anti-virus protection.
I use AVG 8.0 on my windoze laptop, it's free and does the job.
Kaspersky got good ratings on a number of websites I visited before installing AVG 8.
The difference was that AVG was/is free.

Another foc anti virus program is Avast, I use it on my Windows machine. Not sure if it is better than AVG, personally I like it better. Linux is also good protection against virusses and FOC, unlike MAC OS for wich they charge you a whopping €1000 or more. Of course, they do give you some nice hardware for free to use with your brand new OS, but still it is way to expensive me thinks

Another AVG vote here.
When I changed my ISP they sent me a CD to get started with, which frankly didnt work at all well, took about an hour to go through its setting up and failed to load the free 12 months of Makaffee or Norton or whatever it was, properly.
When I called the free help line their "expert" spent some time helping me get set up and sorting out my emails account and dumping the dumbo user_name crap they imposed on me without letting me have what I wanted.
While we were setting up the Antivirus and email settings he suggested I ought to try Mozilla (failed to load when I had tried earlier this year) and use AVG Free.
He helped me get both set up and I have not looked back.

Personally, I've always found Germolene to be the best. Not the most effective mind you, but has a wonderful sting to it, and if you take care to smear it all around the edges it doesn't half make your eyes water, and I sort of like that. Naked pirouetting on the spot, immediately after application adds a certain Russian roulette feel to things. And it helps pass the long nights. Which reminds of Val Singleton, or maybe it was Lesley Judd, smearing marmalade round and round on a CD with her finger. That gave me an erection that lasted for six months and nearly killed me. H

I'm sure the AVG and other free ones do the job, but I have gone for the free Kaspersky from the bank.
Its not too often you get something for free from them and it was pretty hassle free as well so job well done I think!

Rup,
I originally had Kaspersky as a demo in October 2007. I then bought into the system as it seemed better than Norton etc.
When renewal was due, there were problems in obtaining the new lisense. This is precisely when my computer got a serious virus.
Ended up buying a new one, as usage was urgent.
I've tried everything to delete/clear the virus but to no avail. So needs to visit a 'specialist'. But the programmes I need can be operated in 'Safe Mode' whick is lucky for me.
