Formula One race winners should receive gold medals next season with the world championship going to whoever wins most, commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Tuesday.

"Everybody is happy with the idea, they are all very supportive," the 78-year-old told Reuters when asked whether the teams supported his suggestion.

"I'm absolutely 100 percent sure it's the right way to go, it'll get them (the drivers) overtaking," he added.

Perhaps the awarding of actual medals is a bit crass, but there is a certain charm to the notion that the World Champion would be the person who actually won the most races... Discuss!

I have an idea - listen to this guys an girls  its a bit on the edge but it could work

imagine a points table

10 points for 1st
6
4
3
2
1  etc

the winner then gets a clear 4 point advantage and drivers having an average race (bottom 2/3 of grid)score no points.

over the season a driver eg that wins 2 races and crashes twice gets more points than a consistant drives thats scores 4 3rd place podiums.

i'll just email Bernie Smiley

Bring back the point that used to be scored for pole and the one for fastest lap....

I'll second that

If we had medals and Schumaker, it would all be over by June

i refer to my learned friend " the one armed teddy bear"

indeed some race rules may have to be refined, i've picked out a few:

" a driver overtakes a red car at the start (this is not in the "spirit" of bernie) the driver must let the red car back past but may not attempt a re-overtake within the next 100 laps" - this may include the next race.

"leaving the pit anytime you want is fine, points will be awarded on the distance a crew member and /or piece of important safety equipment is dragged. note extra points may be awarded for style and landing.

finally

" the last race of the year in Brazil will not be a race but a x-factor samba dance off between drivers - the decision will rest on the voting native public"

this stuff is gold, Bernie will be so pleased Wink

Careful now. It almost sounds like you're accusing the FIA of cheating in the favour of Ferrari. Obviously you're not as everyone will agree there's absolutely no evidence to support that accusation  Grin

Other than that, some sound ideas for a more open and entertaining event.

Bernie's trying to devalue the series ahead of his impending divorce.

You heard it here first.

Most likely last, too.

Next thing you know is that they will add extra weight to the winners cars and call it DTM Grin

I didn't mention the f- word  Tongue

this is where Toyota is getting it wrong - too much white in the livery, they should use the old gt1 scheme - nice and red.

World champions within 2 years in that colour otherwise no chance Grin

in the same way if force india don't adapt from the current scheme they will soon see mysterious driving penalties (more so than being punted out at monaco) Smiley

They're in deep trouble anyway.  They're changing from Ferrari to Mercedes engines, so any hope they had has just gone out the window

Perhaps after learning their lesson at Monaco, they'll become McLaren's "blocker" cars, and will punt off any Ferrari in sight

A friend told me that in Fridays newpaper it said that Bernie and Mrs E were seperating.  I can't find any mention of it

As he seems to have put everything in his wife's name for tax reasons, there would be no need for a divorce settlement, unless he wanted some of it back
