Maybe with the Austrialian dollar nosediving lately it could be quite affordable too?
If your ears are big enough to do a Dumbo, sure! Cheesy

(flights are still to take the biggest lump out of your budget, but flying via the UK is the cheapest Wink)

and you call yourself a drinker?  Wink Grin

Oi, I only had 6 beers when I posted that! Angry

(did some investigation on Europe to Oz for '09, and if the cheaper flights are Frankfurt - LHR - Perth, then yes, via UK is cheaper Wink)

We'll see the pound might take a few hits too in the months to come so Bathurst on the cheap is still on.
Keep me posted please if cheap flights are available.

When we've been in the past (To Oz, not the race) we flew malaysian airlines - you get 3 inches more legroom than BA in economy, and the flights were pretty resonably priced.

travelbag and trainfinders are good places to start looking, and as for the visa for visiting Oz, www.fastozvisa.com / co.uk are 1/2 the price of everyone else.

You only need a Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) not a full visa if you meet certain criteria and are visiting Australia short term on holiday.
