Spare a thought over your pints tonight.

Some pics of the practice - they must have been brave guys, flying these unknown bombs.

FS, thanks for the link, one the most memorable War Themes ever.

Well, I shall be raising a toast tonight in memory of those brave lads, and lads is what they were, none much older than 24. Who on here could think of doing what they acheived at that age.
And of course, I'll be watching the film.. but 8 planes lost, 50+ dead or missing,

I always remember the final lines of the film, Says a lot about the crews -
Barnes Wallace: [upset] Fifty-six men... If I'd known it was going to be like this, I'd never have started.
Gibson: Now you mustn't think that way. If all these fellows had known from the beginning they wouldn't be coming back they would have gone for it just the same. There isn't a single one of them that would have dropped out. I knew them all. I know that's true....

Fantastic, real heros, real machines of grace.
They dont make a big thing of it, but the Brooklands museum has the prototype boununcing bomb and the catapolt  (model of) that Barnes Wallice used at Felton to test his theory. The Club house at Brooklands was his design office, well worth a visit and our support.
Thanks Peter, maybe we should organise a weekend in East Kirby, I would love take a ride in a lanc even if it didnt take off.

the really appalling disgrace and that is what it is, the airmen and women in Bomber Command still have not been recognised for their contribution to the war effort and received a campaign medal.  Over 55,000 young men and women made the ultimate sacrifice.

I agree, I believe it is about time that those in Bomber Command, (and Coastal) received the recognitian they rightfully deserve.

The point about their age is well made, if you are ever near East Kirby, Lincs, thats Bomber Country, pay a visit and spend some time in their remembrance garden, each plant, shrub, tree is dedicated to a lost crew member some only 17 or 18 years of age.

Here are the details, if you time right and call ahead you may be lucky to have a ride in a fully working Lancaster Bomber which does taxi runs through the year.

Thanks for that, will have to make the trip at some point soon

We shall always remember those that gave thier lives knowingly and willingly.

They wouldn't have any other way.

I spoke to a RAF unit set up by Guy Gibson today (Speak to them most days) , named after the lab, now called black dog. His legacy is a part of the RAf to this day.

I can't drive past a reservoir without thinking of what they did.

We were treated to a triple fly past last Sunday, by a Spit' and a Lancaster.

Sat in the garden at around 11.00 AM, the fly past went on.

Barnes Wallace lived about half a mile from me. I think it was a tip to him.

I hate the way they have dishonoured Guy Gibson and Nigger's memory by butchering the film's sound track...  Angry

Gutless twerps

Unlike 617 and the rest of Bomber Command (and yes Coastal, my dad served in both. Lancs and Stirlings and Catalinas and Sunderlands)

As suggested tonight I raise a few to their memories and the sacrifices they made for us.

I was rather impressed with the BBC coverage (Brown's Bullsh!t Company) of the reservoir flights

I know. The unit had to change its mane in these new times of political correctness.

Cue a rant from Zarse.
