Nothing to do with overpriced red cars chaps but important none the less.
I've got a fresh off the boat Californian import 69 Ford Torino in my workshop today for a spot of rust proofing. Its like new but what worries me is that the underside is covered with some very impressive cobwebs. They are everywhere. I HATE spiders to start with, but I would like to know how big and how nasty are a Californian spiders? Will I never see the promised land again if I end with one down the back of my overalls?

Probably harmless, unless you see black spiders with a redish hourglass shaped mark on their belly.  Those be Black Widows, don't snuggle them...

This may have made the webs... common in the states and rather angry when woken from hibernation. Favours old cars, sheds and crevices.

The only nasty (venomous) spiders indigenous to western US are black widow, brown widow and (rarely) brown recluse.
All have very disorganized webs and are distinctive - long legs, bulbous abdomen - and surprisingly, not likely to bite unless trapped in clothing, shoes etc. All prefer decomposing timber to car undercarriages (woodpiles and garden sheds are their human created habitat)
Try to avoid being bitten, if only for the fact that they produce tissue-necrosing venom. The bite and subsequent decomposing wound often take months and heavy doses of broad-spectrum anti-biotics to properly heal. I'm no expert - I just got bitten by one. Not at all funny.

Oh I feel much better today having finished the underside. Those webs were pretty disorganised things all located near holes and were very strong. I was a little jumpy yesterday even before Mrs S crept up on me and tickled the back of my neck with a piece of grass- the resulting bump on my forhead is also much smaller this morning. Will be glad to see the back of it today thats for sure. Thanks for the heads up you guys Grin
I have found my copy of the Shaft soundtrack for delivering it back too. Superfly!
