if you're looking for a good vantage point this could be the one for you, the aircraft should be overflying this pub, here's to sunny weather and you can stand outside. http://swaninnfarnborough.co.uk/ContactThat looks remarkably close to the old Officers Mess which was used to be an excellent vantage point for the Air Show! Sadly, no scope for me to bunk off from work at High Wycombe tomorrow, otherwise I'd be down there like a shot! MG Mark What on earth are you doing coming to this God foresaken place? Knaphill? |

She flies!  Well, at least the black dot and smoke trails on the horizon indicated that she did indeed make it to Farnborough. According to the Rushmore council webiste she'll be at F'borough until Saturday. Sorry but no indication of departure time. Dx |

Walters Ash, Naphill, High Wycombe, beech trees, a Spitfire and Hurricane on poles, the Bomber Command crest on the gates and buildings in the background...sort of comes with the turf in my line of work at some point.... Yeah, it was a real tragedy.
Don't know if anyone other than the pilots ever got out of a vulcan.
EDIT
Some did, but they couldn't in a hurry - part of the problem when the role was shifted from long range hogh altitude to low level tasks.

Yeah, it was a real tragedy.

My dad used to fly as a bomb aimer in the Vulcan during his National Service. Makes me think what might have been......... Fortunately, every take off had a safe sanding. |

As a design engineer myself, I have huge admiration for the folks that designed and developed the V bombers, they were great aircraft that more than proved their worth by satisfying roles that were way outside of their original design brief and operating far beyond their designed service life. I have a very large soft spot for the Vulcan in particular, a stunning aircraft.
I've also had plenty of experience of the 'bean counters' forcing cutbacks and compromises on designs, sometimes to the point where safety was reduced from what was technically achievable! - That's when I worked in the industrial safety equipment industry! Martin-Baker proved that it was technically achievable to safeguard all crew members.
I doubt that the people responsible for designing these aircraft would have had such a cavalier attitude towards the welfare of the crew, but I have little doubt that the powers that be considered them 'expendable', in much the same way as more recent military personnel have been endangered by poor quality or complete lack of suitable equipment.
It is a sad fact, our political masters then and now, put many other factors ahead of the well-being of military personnel.
