Long live the Union. Let's destroy the last -just returned to British soil- British large(-ish) Car Manufactor straight after takeover. Let's not give the new management any chances!

Just another case of tunnel vision. Worry about the ME and the RIGHT now, not  the long term fiscal stability of the entire company. They can look back at all the failed companies in the US for fine examples of that kind of negoiating.

A lot of people are having to make do with 2% or less pay rises this year, so 6.75% over 2 years is very good.

Sounds like small number of idiot union members/officials trying to flex their muscles with the new management.

On the face of it (as reported by the press, imo determined to knock anything and stir up a storm wherever they can) it is very short sighted. The reality is that we only have specialist manufacturing left in the UK, the rest has gone to Asia and the Eastern European countries. I wonder how many of these "656 members were concerned about many workers being paid less than colleagues for the same job" are British nationals and how many are immigrants who offered their services at a lower pay rate? A controversial question perhaps, but its the situation all across British industry, as consumers, we all want to pay as little as we can for anything we buy, but the industry leaders still want big profits (and salaries). It all started with Maggie and the concept that Brittan’s future lies in the service industry - so lets ignore investment into grubby industry and let it go overseas, the problem is, how do we as the people of the nation pay for the service industry? No gross product, no revenue, no added value, no profit, no Jobs, no pay, no money to pay for the services industry. And then just to seal it the let 100,000's of immigrants literally walk in under the illusion the we are a land of plenty, sure to where most come from we are, but the reality is that we were, but not anymore.
As a 48 year old, unemployed due the lack of investors in what could have been a good product, and now struggling to get another reasonable job it would be easy to say these guys should be happy with what they have been offered and get on with it, however my instinct is that it’s not that simple.

With inflation running at over 4%, 6.75% over 2 years is still pretty poor, effectively a pay cut. Just because others have had crap deals imposed on them, it's no reason to accept crap for yourself.

And you can't blame the union officials. If you read the story, the union initially recommended acceptance of the pay offer, so it's not their doing. The union has to act on the wishes of it's members.

I agree - a short sighted view, though more likely intended as a warning to the new management that they won't put up with poor treatment.
