Hi all,

I have been offered a job in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire upon completion of my thesis. Now my question to any of you are who may live in that area are what are the names of the places I should be looking to live. Initially we are going to rent but hope to buy pretty quickly. I have no real knowledge of that area so any pointers would be gratefully accepted. We are open to all options, i.e I don't mind staying in a town but equally I wouldn't mind staying in a village.
For the sake of anyone asking lets say my budget is probably about 200k.

Cheers for any help in adavance.

Hi Jay,

I live in Hertford about 6 miles from Hoddesdon.

like all places there are some good and bad points to everywhere, Hoddesdon has quite a few estates on it some are better than others, i will try and ask a bloke i work with for some more details (he is off sick at the moment)

Other places near by are Ware bit more expensive, Hertford still more expensive (200k may get you a decent flat !!) There is a new town called Harlow about 6 miles i will get some info from there as well.

If you want PM me you address and i will send up some local rags so you can get an idea of prices etc.

Who will you be working for?

Andy

Hi SmithA

I'll PM you my address asap.

I lived in Harlow for a year previously when I was doing an industrial placement for GSK and don't fancy going back in the ghetto, unfortunately I didn't have any 4 wheeled transport when I was their so the surrounding area is a bit of a mystery. I will (assuming the referees check out) be working for Merck Sharp and Dohme, starting in about March time. I have heard Ware and Hertford are the place to be and I think I will try to centre my initial renting look in this area but it sounds expensive to buy from what you have said. Is places like Royston, Baldock, Hitchin and Bishops Stortford commutable, they look it on a map but I don't know what the traffic is like in the morning and what may look like a 30 minute drive could turn into 2 hours in a slow moving jam. If so are these areas any cheaper to buy in.

Jay - I spent about 30 years living in the Hitchin and Baldock area, and three of my daughters live in Hitchin. Living there is infinitely preferable to living in Hoddesdon. It is possible to commute to Hoddesdon by car each day, although the journey to work will take over an hour, rather than 35 minutes.

 Grin Grin

Phew i did not want to offend anyone but seeing as the door is open .....

Hoddesdon would be the last place i would want to live beaton only in to second place by Harlow!!

Ware is pretty good and does have some cheaper places, i would look at the vicarage road estate.

Not really to sure on the traffic front to get to work in the morning, i can say that it is pants trying to get through Hertford in the mornings (big bottle neck).

Buntingford may be another place to look at as the bypass is now open so it is dual carriage way all the way now. May also be worth looking at Puckeridge and Standon.

What an offer.

You should ask for the telephone numbers of the 3 daughters! Wink
