Hardest question so far this week! I liked the Aston last year on first hearing/seeing. The 'vettes are awesome and have to be contenders, but I reckon the mighty yell of the Panoz is IT! Was that 66 car Saleen the same car that was trucked off in the middle of the night in '03 does anyone know? A beautiful shape. If I ever get to view in the Mulsanne I'd love to see and hear the Lambo on full chat. bill

No, that was the Graham Nash Saleen which in fact reappeared at the end of the race due to much hard work from the team although it didn't do its statutory pecentage of laps. Driven by the fab mr T Erdos, Mike Newton and Pedro Chaves. Konrad entered a couple in '01 which didn't finish and again in '02 when one finished 26th and last and the other a DNF. However, Acemco are the first team to have got them back in a decent place, so are chuffed to bits. Got a nice e-mail from the engineers at Acemco a couple of days ago. Watch out for a proper Oreca (now the European concessionaires for the 500,000$ American Supercar) factory-backed team of 2 cars which should be at the race next year. Already done a pretty fair job at Spa this year.

OK I admit it I was just trying to butter Fran up Obviously the Audis were far the nicest cars in the race... No I didn't mean because of the big nipplies above the driver's head either... Ooh, what do those big men want me to put that big funny jacket on for...? No please... No beggar it, I stand by my every word. I love the Saleen and always had a soft spot for it after watching it break down at Tertre Rouge in the night back then and photographing it being low loadered away. Glad it is back, glad it's 66 too... Even if it is a different chassis!

The Audi was a pain in the neck when trying to take pictures. Normally you heard the car aimed the camera and took the pic.
The bleeding Audi, when you heard it, it was already gone!
If all the cars got this quiet, MB campsite may be asked to keep the noise down.
and that would be from the drivers!

Murcie, no doubt about that Then comes the 996 RSR fleet and 3rd for Panoz I positioned myself at Tertre Rouge at night. You could hear the Porsches long after they've thrown in 6th gear. The Lambo has such a wonderful V12. I think it comes from the rear exhaust instead of the sidepipes of Aston and Ferrari

Is it true that from next year there will be a 113db noise limit on the cars? Is this another concession to Audi and Peugeot's oil burners? Putting silencers on the petrol engined cars to bring them down to this limit will rob them of about 10-15% power and as much as 20% torque, the petrol cars are already so far behind. We struggle to get our Historic rally cars through a 108db limit, they are so quiet now compared to period. Le Mans will not be the same without earsplitting cars wailing up the pit straight - if it is true we need to act, lobby the ACO before they F*** it right up!

Actually you are all wrong. The best sounding car at Le Mans this year was the sound of mine starting first time on Monday morning after sitting there for four days in the heat, dust and Shite of HA. Knowing the reputation Landy Discos have got it always comes as a relief when the bloody thing gets me there and back without breaking down or something falling off it.

Oh, yeah, it's "I Blame the French" by Jack Hughes again. To be fair I think the sports' car community as a whole is scared after the cancellation of Monza due to noise problems. This was caused by complaints from the locals and did not orriginate with the organisers. The Green lobby is getting a bigger stranglehold on these things and all motor racing organisations are having increasing problems on this front. I absolutely agree, natch, I'm a sports' car fan, that the noise is such a big part of our enjoyment of the race but get a grip, please, the ACO is not at the front of this. Lobby, yeah, I'm a big fan of that as a principal, but please aim this at the right people. Don't forget, the ACO only owns the enclosed part of the circuit, much of it is on public roads, and they rely on local co-operation each year to get the race on. If there's going to be a decibel limit (can anybody confirm this?) then it's not necessarily to be laid at the organisers' door. Rant over.
