Tomorrow, May 23rd, it is 25 years ago that Herbert Müller died during the Nurburgring 1000km when he lost control of his Brunn-entered Porsche 908 at the "Mutkurve" and crashing into the retired Porsche 935 of Bobby Rahal - parked at the outside of a fast corner that is nicknamed "Mutkurve" (Corner of Courage) for obvious reasons.
Müller finished Le Mans 2nd two times. 1971 together with Richard Attwood in a 917 and 1974 in a Porsche RSR with Gijs van Lennep
Müller was nicknamed "Stumpen-Herbie" in the german speaking world - you never saw him without a cigar. "Stumpen" is an informal term for a used cigar.
Also very noticeable was his full beard that made a big contrast to his army-style short cut hair. He didn't like it to have his hair untidy and sweated when taking of the helmet.
R.I.P. Stumpen-Herbie
1940-1981
PS: Sadly I didn't find a proper picture of him outside the car
