Go for it Lee... dont let the ghostly silence bother you... we seem to have a lot of quiet "guests" these last few days. I am glad there isnt so much brown in race car colours since the 80s tho. I would be interested to see some older Saleens if they have been around for a while (if you are taking requests that is...)

well, if you're gonna beg... Fran: I'm working chronoloigically, will take a bit to get to the saleens... 1985 - 53rd Place (from Pole) - Porsche 962 - Akin/Stuck/Mullen From Porsche Turbo USA, Pg. 37: Fastest of the 962s, Bob Akin’s pole-sitting Coca-Cola entry, piloted by Bob, Hans Stuck and Jim Mullen. Coca-Cola sponsored the race and the team and they started from the pole. Excellent press release material. Stuck’s 1:31.574 was three-and-a-half seconds better than the Holbert entry in 2nd. Taking the lead on the fourth lap, things couldn’t have looked better. For the first hour, Stuck’s Red Rocket was dominant. At the first fuel stop they were headed by Tullius’ Jaguar, then they chased the #67 BF Goodrich Porsche. Sadly, in the third hour, it all went away. “Mullen was motoring down the backstretch at something approaching 200 miles per hour when debris blew his right rear tire and the exploding tire ripped up the rear of the car, ‘it tore the car apart’ is how Akin put it.” -Lee

This film should be played at high volume, so don't come complaining about it! And who the hell is Steve?

Great pics Lee, love the photo of Bob Akin's Coca Cola 962. I always had a soft spot for that car. However I have very sad memories of the Coke 962 from the Mid-Ohio IMSA round in 1986. It was the weekend after Le Mans and Bob's team had painted a large black stripe across the nose of the car in memory of Jo Gartner. Jo was part of their winning trio along with Hans Stuck and Bob Akin at Sebring and his death was weighing heavily on everyone at Mid-Ohio that weekend. Fax

Fax: I was at that race. Mid-Ohio '86. I'll see what I can find and scan this afternoon. The car went out early in the race, with Stuck driving. Coasted to a stop on the front straight, Stuck hopped out and pulled the engine cover off. electrics I believe. The team seemed visibly relievedtheir race was over.
By contrast, In the Holbert garage they had the Le Mans victory wreath on a stand.
mixed emotions. -Lee

Yes, I do remember very clearly now remember seeing Al's victory garland on display. Spent a good deal of Saturday down in the paddock and one could sense that everyone's thoughts were on Jo, he had become a very popular member of Akin Racing and the IMSA community as a whole. Bob's usually merry band were obviously very shaken. Fax
