Six engined Shak's did exist and they were all proper engines.  Quite right, 4 griffon with contra rotating props AND TWO Bristol Siddeley Viper turbojet 's.  Part of the Mk3 phase 3 uplift programme, I think.

Couple of site's here worth looking at

Brilliant link FS thanks. Always love to read more about the mighty Shak. Back in 77 while Kinloss was having runway updates I was able to live in 8 sqn's hangar while my TA unit were on exercise in the Highlands, so happy memories there too. Most of the aircraft were at Lossie at the time.

I remember reading about the phase 3 thing but news on it drifted so I thought it got "governmented" out of existance...

Good old days.

Bill, funny to think that the Mk 2 lived on longer than the Mk 3, in the AEW role while we sorted out AEW Nimrod, finally settling on AWACS.  Using the AEW kit from the FAA Gannets, now that is getting value for money Cheesy

Its good how memories come back, 8 Squadron operated the Mk 2's and they were all named after characters from the Magic Roundabout.

Thinking about it (extra pedantic hat on, now) might have been '76 'cos '77 we were in Bavaria on Reforger...

About that Gannet AEW kit, even that was recycled from the AEW Skyraiders wasn't it? IIRC...

Memories ain't even slightly reliable these days!

Bill,

You're spot on, Skyraiders from the good ole' US of A

Marvellous exercise Reforger what a hoot, such a sight, all those young American boys flying direct from home dropping onto German soil.

Bad enough being crapped up on an Albert from blighty, at least they had Jet comfort on the Starlifters.
