What documents to take?

When driving in France, what documents must you have with you and / or in the car?

Licence - both parts?
Proof of insurance?
Proof of ownership?

Also take copies of all of them and as people have mentioned before if you get nicked for speeding and they want your licence give them the photocopy

All the bits you say could be handy. I am always a bit wary of leaving a V5 in the car so you may want to leave it at at home and take a photocopy, not the same I know but is it worth the risk?.

Proof of insurance should be carried.

Also 2 photo copies of your Licence, leave one at home and take the other with you.

If your car is a company one, a letter from a director is needed stating you can take the car abroad.

Paperwork other than driving documents - as has been mentioned before:

Passport
Camping tickets
Entry tickets
E111
Green Card (mine always comes with a useful leaflet to complete in the event of an accident, I have a small supply of these in the glovebox as so far not needed - I'll regret saying that)
Private medical insurance certificate and emergency numbers
European breakdown insurance
ACO membership card
Maps
Credit cards and money

and a spare set of car keys (yes, Sebringers, just in case you lock yours in the boot...)
