My brother has justbeen given a pc not new but new to him and it wasn't starting up a windowsprotection error. So I formatted thehard drive and installed millenium edition all going well until it comes to restart and all I am getting is the blue windowsscreen of death saying WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR

Can anyone help before I get the 12bore out

Chris,
Is there any other info / message displayed along with the Protection Error?  
It could be a conflict with a whole host of third party devices or even a BIOS problem.
As much detail as possible would be useful such as a description of the specific error.

When I first formatted the HD and installed WindowsME got to the startup screen with mouse cursor displaying only the got will nowclose KERNEL32.DLL MPREXE re-started the got blue screen of death error : oe : 0167 : bff821fa

So followed the help file info on boot disk scanned all disksasit told me too then it reinstalled again then got the screen of death saying just Windowsprotection error

Chris,
Have a good read of this page http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;149962 and see if anything rings a bell.

Follow the instructions to Boot the PC into SAFE mode and then see if you get the same error message - then, depending on whether your receive an eror message or not, follow the links on the page to the corrective action.
