I know it has nothing to do with motorsport but for those of us of a certain age. It was the end of an era today.

The great John Peel passed away.

I am breaking out my T Rex and Undertones LPs.

You don't win Le Mans - you outlast it.

He and Marc Bolan made some pretty good music. R.I.P. both of them.

Of a certain age?

I'm 22 and i feel gutted at the loss of John Peel - When i was about 15, John Peel was the one person's opinion i really listened to when it came to music - it was at that time that my own personal tastes in music started to develop away from the influences of my parents.

Championing punk rock, he led me to some of my favourite artists by promoting thier genre, even if it wasnt thier music that he favoured - The modern artists such as Greenday, LemonJelly, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Asian Dub Foundation and so on and so forth all owe a large amount of thier success, and the fact that they are in my record collection to John Peel.

Not only was he a revolutionary DJ, but a gentleman who wasn't afraid to tell you who and what he loved or hated.  Having the balls to say on national radio that you love your family, love a band or hate a new style of music just added to his appeal, which generally started with his unique voice.

Where ever you are John, we hope you are happy and that they have amps and guitars.

Rock in Peace  \\m//

A point well put Brad.

I rember him crossing over from Prog Rock to Punk, wich means I have Pink Floyd and The Clash in the CD changer.

"Of a certain age". Maybe I should of said "he made certain ages"

A loss to broadcasting and music.
Heard the news today on the wireless and suddenly remembered all those nights listening to the JP Show on Radio 1, when I should have been doing my home work.

A very sad day.

I won't only remember John for the music, but also for Mrs B and my lazy lie-ins on a Saturday morning listening to him presenting "Home Truths" on Radio 4 in his inimitably relaxed fashion.

Looking back, it seems impossible that this elderly man was responsible for the station's only truly self-programmed, genuinely interesting show. Where will the kids send their demos now? Kerrang? Chris Moyles? Kind of proves there is no God or justice really IMO.

I've moderated out the discussion regarding Mr Zs question, which I'm sure was rhetorical and as such needs no answer. This thread is a tribute to the late great JP, not one for expressing views on broadcasters today. Thanks, smokie

This is terrible news, a huge loss not only for music but for the world.

The guy was on a working holiday in Peru, says  a little about the kind of man he was.

I've stopped listening to Radio 1 with the shoddy treatment of real DJ's who like music, even John Peel was pushed into doing later & later shows.

He will be sadly missed by us all  Cry

You're either at Le Mans, or waiting for Le Mans!

From what I am hearing about him it sounds as if saving Radio 1 is not the only thing he does with a single hand.

JP was a star alright. I was always amazed at how he kept his ears open to everything while most of his contempories had found their ruts and continued to plough them year in year out.
I shall say a prayer for him in the tabernacle this afternoon, and ask why Dave Lee Travis is still alive (and getting paid as well...)
