You don't win Le Mans - you outlast it.

The best quote from yesterday was a bbc comentator saying that Tim going out of wimbledon was the last chance for any British sporting win this year!...... Thats a bit harsh writing off our entire Olympic team so quickly!
Saying that the Olympics is easy to forget about

I suppose the rugby world cup , and the great cricket victories along with snooker,  don't count as sport!!!.
its the british thing, WE love a loser and hate a winner. That said WHY have you bought tim into the equation, he has no killer instinct

Bird, what the f**k!  The guy has finished in the top twenty in the ATP season rankings for seven years in a row and has eleven career singles titles....and he's an embarassment to your country?  Sounds like your the one who's the embarassment.

I get depressed watching Henman, but today's Times has a table which ranks him 2nd behind Borg, and above Becker, McEnroe, Sampras and Laver - based on number of Wimbledons played against quarter-finals reached. I suppose you can make stats prove anything, but there is no doubt he's not the loser the press and public like to think he is.

All of these tournaments have just one winner, and a whole load of losers. It seems a bit unrealistic to expect England to win everything...the response of the tabloids and public to the footy and to Beckham and Erikson specifically (and the ref, who undoubtedly made at least one bad decision) shows how shallow the nation has become... It's reported today that the ref has had to go into hiding because of death threats received following publication of his email and phone details by a tabloid. It's only a game!

As you can see, I'm having a bad day...

These people are not an embarassment really, they are sportsmen and have good and bad days like everyone else. They are built up by (most of) the British media to be heroes to the extent that if they walked on water it would not be a surprise, and the gullible follow their lead.

Then when they are seen to be human and they fail they are reported as being useless, not only in their sporting endeavour but in all sorts of (unrelated) other aspects of their lives. Again the gullible follow.

What is the real embarassment is the way most sections of the British media treat these poor b**tards and the way most of the population seem to lap it up.

On the subject of the media and embarassment I am now totally ashamed to call myself British after hearing that certain tabloids are running hate campaigns against the Swiss referee who contentiously disallowed an England goal. The poor man now has to go into hiding after receiving death threats. These threats no doubt coming from readers of these publications who think that they are helping the cause along.

Thats a true sign of our reputation for being sporting eh?

Oops - was that a rant??
