I've found this super site with time saving tips for lighting a BBQ.   In the normal quest for finding more drinking time it seems to be the ideal solution.
Not 30 mins not 10 mins not even a minute not even half a minute but a staggering 3 Secs

The site?  http://web.archive.org/web/20021003203611/ghg.ecn.purdue.edu/~ghg/

So can anyone supply LOX?

Do you know where you plan to camp? I'll stay well clear! Oh, and as a warning, your BBQ will probably look like this afterwards...

Hi Tom,
I think that clip may be from Dr Cliffs support page, which gave me a lot of laughs:

http://www.cardhouse.com/drcliff/garage/tech/techsupport.htm

Lighting the bbq with something other than firelighters or bbq fluid is, I reckon, a coming of age moment. I think my baptism was with a can of four-star. Whoa! - who'd have thought it? - all that energy stashed up in one teeny weeny gallon can.

Hardly any PC time right now, hope I'm not missing much....

Just praying tmdg isn't near me on MB!!!  Grin

Mr Toad,

I'm not sure where I'm camping yet.   My idea spot would be on MB next to a rather extensive motorhome  with lots of fairylights and a paddling pool.  do you know anyplace like that?  Cheesy

That pic looks a lot like my old BBQ.  I will get a more substantal one next time.

Hi Tom,

No H it's from George Goble he was asked to shut down the original site. So there is only the archive site now.

Dr Cliff had me in stiches too.

That gives me another idea.  I have a laptop I'm planning to cook in the Microwave.   Afterwards we could run some tests to see what car is best to use as a Clamp a la "Mazda Clamp"  http://www.cardhouse.com/drcliff/garage/tech/vcr.htm

LOX is hardly available from the local Carrefour and is marvellously combustible.  Amazing really that 2 of the most highly combustible gases on the planet (hydrogen and oxygen) form inert water when combined... But beware of LOX, mainly because it does not actually need an ignition source - as the following cautionary tale will tell you.   Picture a steely-eyed fast jet pilot on a transit flight across the Atlantic driving one of Her Majesty's finest fighting single-seat machines.   Halfway across, feeling hungry, he unwraps the ham sandwiches that have been carefully prepared by catering staff to sustain him on his trip.   Lowering his oxygen mask from his mouth, but leaving it dangling from the straps in front of his face with the oxygen flow still on, the intrepid hero goes to take a bite of this culinary delight.   At which point spontaneous combustion of the grease in the ham and butter occurs, which spreads to his moustache............. cue much hilarity from colleagues and, yes, this is a true story.

In answer to the question can anyone get liquid O2. That would be yes. Would anyone want to carry any all the way to Le Mans -  that would be a big fat no. It is rather reactive and I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it if it caught. Being the Phd chemist that I am, I have a wide access to explosive/ combustible chemicals. (Last year we used magnesium ribbons to get the BBQ going), and I offer up a great deal of caution about anyone attempting to take liquid O2 with them.

Something I would suggest though, is trying to get your hands on some cardice. (Basically frozen CO2). This stuff will keep your beer cool for days. We have a 15l fridge that we take and I think we are gonna fill it with cardice. A small amount of this into the paddling pool makes a great beer chiller.

Where do you get cardice - haven't seen it in Tesco - and how much is it?

Cannonball,
I didn't think O2 was flamable as such.  Sure nothing can burn without O2 but O2 it self doesn't burn.    Care to give us the whole scoop on combustion and all that stuff?

BTW,  In O level chemistry we did cool stuff like putting glowing wire wool in to O2 watching iron burn is great fun and very educational.

Also  did you look at any of the videos on the link I posted.

Some of these threads are getting too serious.

Cardide MMmmmm!

Just typed it in on google and got this web address.

http://www.messer.co.uk/applications/pdf/car_pr_flyer.pdf

-80 Deg C it is a form of dry ice. I am sure it would be abused at Le Mans but I would check with ferry companys before you try to take it.

LOX does not burn but supports combustion vigoursly. The liquid itself is stable but in the immediate vicinity of any fuel source it becomes shock sensitive. As you can imagine if you have concentrated LOX (4000 times more than whats in the air) it doesn't take a large shock to cause ignition. Also the presence of static electricity can cause ignition.

You should be able to get Cardice from any friendly chemical supplier such as Merck or Fisher should oblige. Dunno if you need to be on a approved buyer list first  though.

Throwing pure caesium into water is another fun experiment. It works with sodium metal but less impressive.

Errr, (worriedly!) Huh what campsite did you guys say you will be on?

Cardide as a vigorous refrigerant seems slightly ok-ish (after all, a man needs... cool beer and hot girls)  Cheesy but the O2 factor on top of five days of almost  (did I say almost?) junky trashy foodstuffs hastabe serious overkill......
