Matt, download this movie with GOOD sound of a Fuel Funny at Santa Pod http://www.nitroheaven.freeserve.co.uk/showtime/video/roundtwofinal.zipWow - the old "Showtime" vette. Was that Gene or the Scandinavian guy who bought the car later? The explosion of noise when he hits the gas is really impressive and doesn't do justice to the effect in real life, with the ground shaking - it just hits you in the chest - mind-melting. The only thing that comes near to a fuel car launch for me, was when we sneaked onto the Mulsanne straight during the '91 race. A C91 Sauber passing 25 feet away, doing 200+mph removes the air from your lungs also. We're in danger of getting flamed in this thread for not being Le Mans related and I thank the Gestapo (moderators) for tolerating it's non Le Mans content. Drag racing is a bit specialised and if you're not into it - it can seem a bit banal - but it is a truly massive sport here in the US. There are lots of people driving around in 10second street cars here. The Gatornats are just up the road from me in Gainesville FL in March, if you fancy it Steve - trouble is it usually clashes with Sebring - not sure about this year, but it is one of the biggest meets in the National circuit. I run my vette from time to time in 12.6 bracket at Orlando Speedworld. its OK, but I do often get creamed by riceburners with outrageous turbocharged, water injected nitrous spraying, screaming 4 bangers - it's not right.

To bring on to a le mans link, but only just, there is a guy in the uk running and Aston Martin (been to LM and coming back) Vantage with 1000hp and its street legel too. Mind you some of the V8 motors of Ford and Chev ran at both - drag and LM - all be it for deffernt resons. I wounder what a Top Fueler would do down the Mulsan?

People - if you want more classic stuff, then try ................ http://www.ukdrn.co.uk/mc/mc.htmThe rocket car just proves that when the RAF doesn't need old engines, there is always a good home waiting..........

Mark, I remember being at Santa Pod in '84 when Sammy Miller brought over from the States his 'Vanishing Point' rocket car. The car was pushed to the start line and placed 'in stage'. With a bit a button pushing and valve opening, the reaction in the rocket motor began with a few farts and pops. Then, when Sammy was ready, the commentator made the crowd give a "five, four, three....." countdown. At "one" the main reaction was initiated and..........whoosh.......the car was gone. Truely amazing, I nearly soiled my strides. I think he pulled more than 4 g's on acceleration and minus the same in braking!

In doing a bit of Google poking around, I've just found out Sammy Miller was killed in a Texas oilfield in October 2002 - nothing to do with rocket cars. Here's a link to a video of one of his 300 mph plus passes at Santa Pod. http://www.ukdrn.co.uk/mc/4.35@317.mov
Needs Quicktime to play.
