That ain't Le Mans. It's a banked track - Brooklands, maybe?

Brooklands had trees round the top didn't it?
How about Monterey.

Dunno if Brooklands was tree-lined all the way round - either way, it looks like the driver's lined himself up for an early bath!

No, you're right, it's not Brooklands. You can't see Tescos or Sony UK.
Matt, I think he'll need more than a long soak with some Radox after this one.
I was reading that Merc are going to buy Brooklands and throw a lot of Euros at it, which I think is probably a good thing, as long they don't turn it into a shrine to Mercedes. There's something nice about them funding an old wartime airstrip and helping out with restorations of Lancaster bombers.

Yeah...you're all right, it is in fact some kind of an oval with rather high banking. The car below is driving while I thought it was sliding sideways in the direction of the top of the hill. Doesn't make me less curious about "who, where and when" though...  Roll Eyes

Not Montlhéry either because they run anti clockwise...

Not Brooklands as racing ceased there in 1939 (car looks newer than that).
Not Montlhery as the wrong direction.

I reckon it's Sitges.

Oh Jesus!
Thats a photo of Jean Behra's fatal accident at Avus in 1959.
His Porsche went over the old banking and he was thrown to his death.

Well done Fax - Avus it was. He was competing in a support race for the German GP. Apparently the poor fella ended up wrapped around a flagpole - very unfortunate.
Behra sounded like a bit of a character - a month before his demise, he was fired from Ferrari for punching his team managers lights out. Nice one!
You made up your mind about Rolex yet, John?

You don't win Le Mans - you outlast it.

Now I can see the picture. Yes, devinately Avus, very tragic moment. There is a very good article about Behra on 8w.forix which is a fantastic site concerning race history in general. The link is http://8w.forix.com/behra.html and it's well worth a look.

Fax,
In 1976 I wrapped my old mans 1600 Ford capri round a tree (dislodging the "BigH-Little Raoul" sunscreen sticker as well, I might add). A severe case of "having a good talking too" resulted, are you able to tell me:
1. The species and genus of tree
2. Colour of the car (clue: it had a go-faster white stripe)
3. The size and shape of the indentations left on me by my old fella
4. Address and postcode of accident site, including current whereabouts of the cowboys who repaired it with rolled up copies of Exchange & Mart, Isopon filler and underseal.
Have a good'un

Hi Matt,
I think I'm gonna take you up on the Rolex.  The airline prices look pretty good right now. Probably just come down on Friday night and head back Monday morning.  I'll drop you a line tonight to firm things up.  Funny thing about Behra, he had a plastic ear to replace one torn off in an racing accident and for laughs he would suddenly pull it off in restaurants to see the reaction of his fellow diners.
