Guess what? The Duke of Richmond and Gordon (or Charlie as I call him) and myself are fellow Commer owners. We also both leave our Commers sitting outside all winter in the wet and cold weather under a tree. Classy huh? Other lesser classic Goodwood Estate vehicles are parked in the dry paddock sheds, but the Commer is considered above such mollycoddling. His Lordship's Sunday Times Commer was parked up on the main entrance when I went to a trackday recently. Of course, I discussed the matter with Chas when he invited us for tea and scones in Goodwood House, or was it that I bumped into him in the curcuit Gents toilet? No matter; he was rivetted by my talk of his Commer being a late PA model. I pointed out it only has single side/indicator lights (whereas my PB has doubles), has a rear-acting handbrake and lacks the lozenge-shape grille of the PB. Captivated and entranced he was, but he was unavoidably called away after thirty seconds by his staff to deal with some no doubt important estate matters. And he didn't come back to me for some reason.  Queer lot these aristos! |

I found out today that my dear old Grandfather used to pootle around the New Zealand countryside in a Commer. I was foetus at the time so don't remember. Will have to talk to Dad and have a root through the family photo albums. I also found this while seeing what's currently about in NZ.
