Bit off topic I know but I've just acquired a 3.9 Rover V8 which is about to be mated to an engine stand in my garage for a full rebuild.
The fridge has been installed in the garage as a matter of priority of course, in anticipation of long, thirst inducing evenings.
I'm handy enough with a socket set and a parts washer having rebuilt a couple of Pinto's but can anyone recommend a decent source of reference for the Rover engine?

The Haynes manual - "Tuning V8 Rovers" isn't a bad place to start, and the RPI engineering site is well worth a look.

Having had a Rover V8 Landie, I have one piece of advice - do not skimp on the oil-pump. Ours clapped out at about 50k miles, cost us a fortune to rebuild the engine. Talking to a pub-friend in the trade he knew of similar cases on this engine.

Don't scrimp on camshaft and followers either. There are some really cheap ones kicking about at the moment that will have no lobes left after 5000 miles. The hydraulic tappets disguise the wear and the first thing you know is that you have an uncurable misfire; the valve ends up almost fully closed which starves the cylinder to such an extent that it won't fire anymore.

 We had this problem a few years back on a Range Rover that had been rebuilt just six months before. The cam was shocking.

Have you seen the DVD of a "Landrover is reborn"

What about the gearbox?  SD1 boxes are like hen's teeth, and tend to break anyway.  I hear that TR8 rally gear sets aren't much of an improvement either.

Later RV8 engined cars used the R380 gearbox and a T5 can be easily fitted.  Both are adequate for a 3.9s power levels.

Thanks for all the advice gents. I've no particular plans for the beast at the moment - just want to bring it back to an "as new" condition then either sell it or, dare I say, persuade she who must be obeyed to let me drop it into a Cobra rep.
