Glad to hear there are so many CA'ers coming out of the bike closet!! Come on the rest of you, hands up and "my name is _____, I am a cyclist".  My name is Phil ( Robbo to you lot ) and i am a cyclist, every bloody day to work and back, and its getting b,loody cold. Why because of the TRAFFIC TALIBAN and £30 per day fines. |

Have you seen that you can claim 20p a mile for bikes, 25p a mile for motorbikes and 40p a mile for cars for travel allowance.
Shame i can't get all those toolboxes on me bike, i could cycle to work and claim car travel allowance....

PS Are there any remnants of the once magnificant BRM empire left in Bourne? I have a small and very tenuous connection with the Owen Organisation.
Never tried a unicycle, I'd be too frightened in case the saddle fell off.  So what is your "small and very tenuous connection" (oo-er missus) with the Owen Org.? |

Twofold really. My Grandad knew AGBO quite well, they were both from Walsall. I remember being taken as a very small kid, about five, to Darlaston Bapist(?) Church to hear the great man preach a service. He was a legend in the pulpit apparently. It was one of the most boring afternoons of my life. I don't think any of his good intentions rubbed off on me, except a love of cars, as I knew nothing of motoracing in those days. I would have much rather done what my dad was able to do, namely visit Bourne a few times, meeting the likes of Graham Hill and Tony Rudd. They used to go out boozing together.
In an ealier part of my life, I was on the committee of the Owen Motoring Club, which was sort of affiliated with Rubery Owen Ltd. The club emblem was the old Owen Organisation rondel thingy, AGBOs son David was the Chairman. It was all a bit low key really, though we once had Betty Hill and her daughter Bridget as our guests at the annual dinner. Damon couldn't make it, he had an important FFord race the next day...
We also used to run the Graham Hill Sprint at Curborough. Indeed I competed in it a few times. First prize trophy was the wheel of Hills F1 '64 title winning car. Unfortunately Roy Lane in his famous Steel King Pilbeam DFV just pipped me to it! By about 15 seconds. Well I was only in an Alfasud.

Cripes, a bit more than a "small and tenuous" I'd say!! The heritage day was a bit spesh, shame you couldn't make it! Damon did send his apologies for the no-show but he was racing at Spa that afternoon! |

Sorry, I should add for the unitiated that AGBO was Sir Alfred Owen who ran Rubery Owen, which was a massive business in the car component industry. I think it has nearly all gone now tho. Owen was the money and the power behind the throne of BRM. It is in no small way that eventually Raymond Mays and Peter Berthon were able to deliver a car capable of not only winning a GP's but allowed Graham Hill to take the world title too.
AGBO was a truly modest but great man. Probably one of the most influential people in the histroy of British motor sport.

Get a Pali Pod , or cycle trailer. £100 from wiggle.com and you can put everything in it , tolls , kit , ladders( small ones ) and my dof sits in his , in the summer , betas all the traffic and parking when going to the beach ? So , who is it that claims the money back ? |
