GLOBAL ERUPTION:  During the early hours of August 1st, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a complex global disturbance on the Earth-facing side of the sun.  Most of the sun's northern hemisphere was involved in the event, which included a long-duration C3-class solar flare, a "solar tsunami," and a massive filament eruption.  As a result of these blasts, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading toward Earth.  High-latitude geomagnetic storms and auroras are possible when the cloud arrives a few days hence. 

A few years back I was in Denver Colarado for a business conference, on morning of my departure back to Europe a magnetic flare hit the area, it knocked out the check in system at the airport, instead of a short wait at the Lufthansa desk, it turned out to be a 5 hour marathon as you had to be checked in manually with the staff phoning Germany to book you in! The boarding pass was a hand written one, and caused utter confusion at security with even longer waits.

On boarding the pilot assured us they the plane was ok and had not been effected as it had protection against such events.

not wishing to be rude or disparaging, the clue is in the word, 'Northern', somehow, Reading isn't regarded as up north in any sense of the word.

Maybe elevate yourself a few dozens of height and then maybe you'll be lucky...

 

I am aware of where the frikkin northern lights are.....

However.  You will notice, that during times of heavy solar activity, and CME's, aurora's are often visible on the South Coast (albeit far less clearly than in the scottish highlands).

I'm sure Perdu will agree but The North starts much further north than that. 

I prefered to think of the North as places you can get beer for less than a Quid a pint.    The trouble is inflation has happen an I don't think we have a North any more.

I did see the Auroroa on one balmy summer evening as my lad and I were gently proceeeding afoot to the Hardwick for a few post prandial libations

I'm sorry to intervene but this seems to be THE made up bu**sh** horror story of the year.  

I went through a couple of astronomy related sites and they tell nothing about a big bang or something.

It's holiday time and it seems that some "journalists" make the usual headline stories just to keep people amused... same procedure as every year.

Did I mention that the world's end is due Friday next week, it's the 13th. Mark it in your diary.

That will leave just about enough time to enjoy the Persedes meteor shower in the night of the 12th/13th.

spaceweather is fine and I confess I didn't look up that site.  

If it's true - and spaceweather usually leaves no doubt - then we're in for some fantastic sights in the next couple of days. Maybe not in Germany but in the UK you should head your camera up during the night.

One funny discussion I came about was at www.astrotreff.de. The thread title is roughly translated "Do have aliens enough human brain power ?" I answer that with a "clearly not" - there are far too many humans at Le Mans each year and you can clearly see they have no brain at all - aliens can't be that dumb or wait... are these aliens

Love it, back to the old Club Arnage forum, Bol*ocks fed by buls*it with a bit of intellect infringing on more Boll*cks and Bulls*it.
I'm off to the local beach to watch the Southern Lights and see how they compare to the Northern lights. Not that I have seen the Northern lights, but I am sure the Southern lights will be an up market version of them. Can any one tell me the best time to go a watch them, should I wait till it gets dark?

Every time I hoped to see the Perseids meteor shower in the UK it was overcast.    One night I was looking so hard I nearly fell off the footpath as I walked home from the pub.
