There may be a short interruption in service this Thursday (27th May 2010). I'll add to this thread when I know the exact time.

We need to change the IP address of our server. This is not our choice, it has been imposed on us by Uni-C who are retiring the "130.228" series of addresses. As a result, we need to change our DNS servers to resolve the clubarnage.com domain to the new IP address (95.128.24.74). The process of DNS broadcast can take anything from minutes to hours, so you may not be able to connect for a while.

It's worth noting the new IP Address 95.128.24.74 if you are suffering from the delay in the new address propagating though the DNS servers you can add it to your hosts file and work around the problem that way.  If there is call for it I'll post the instructions for doing that.

And then in three years time when it changes again all the people that changed their hosts file will have forgotten and won't be able to get to the new one....

UPDATE

The change will happen at 12:00 noon UK time. After that, it will take a while for the DNS to propagate, but you still should be able to reach CA in the interim just using http://95.128.24.74 as CA is the default site on the server. There might be ten minutes or so of re-boot, and the time may not be exactly on the second, so don't panic if nothing works for a short while.

Oh Dear!!!!!    I'll have to find my hard hat in that case.

I hope it all goes smoothly.  :-)

In fairness the change required on the Server is minor it''s just the time it takes for the DNS to catch up.

We had a customer one that took 3 days once!  But that was a few years ago, seems to be only a few hours these days,  we did a load of our websites not long ago, but then we could still run the sites on backup servers on the old IP addresses in the mean time, thank god!  But it was the following day before the last dribs and drabs dropped off.

From what I can see the TTL is 3600 seconds or an hour in real money so in theory it should not take more than a couple of  hours for the change to propagate the whole internet.  But that assumes that your name server and all the intervening  name servers obey the TTL.

Hi,

Just a small word of caution on this.  When you click a link it try to take you to http://www.clubarnage.com/forum/WHATEVER and that will still fail.
However the wiki side of the site will still work so I'll add some info there on the status of the server.

Good point.

I tried using 130.228.2.207 and it can be made to work, but you have to replace 'www.clubarnage.com' with 130.228.2.207 with cut and paste for each page you open. Laborious but possible...

Well, it's 12.03 and the site is working for me on the usual URL, as is http://95.128.24.74, so is it safe to assume the cutover has happened and it has all gone very smoothly?
