Anybody going to the Indy 500?   Looks like I have a ticket and will be able to fly up on Saturday and leave after the race on Sunday.  Maybe Dave Harper is on this thread and has some getting around town information to share???

John,

Enjoy the race, I haven't been to the 500 but have been to the Brickyard 400. The track in awesume and hugh. Its well set up to deal with traffic and it usually disperses after the race in about 1 hour !

I friend of mine is travelling over from the UK to the race this year.

Just a favour, if you get the opportunity to pick up any driver cards at the event, I would be very greatfull if you pick up a copy or two for me at the same time where possible.

Are we seeing you at Le Mans this year ?

Regards
Chris

John,

If you make it into Indianapolis early enough on the Saturday, then may i suggest a trip to the "Little 500" USAC race which is a race held just outside Indianapolis. It is a race with a lot of tradition, which is run the night before the Indy 500. Its supposed to be well worth the visit and only $25 to get in.  I believe my mate is doing this race too.

For details see

Hi John,
I recomend a visit to the museum, which is in the infield. I also would suggest a visit to the bar/resturaunt with a Mini on a pole but as I can not remember the name or address a bit of a non- starter.

Hey Chris, I am going to make Le Mans this year.  I have my transportation arranged and will be staying with Brian and the Liverpool boys in MB.  I will be arriving just after 8:00PM on Thursday.
As to Indy 500, I will be flying up on Saturday, late afternoon and back after the race.  Not much time to look around and enjoy, maybe next time.  A friend has an extra ticket and asked if I wanted it.  Since I had never been, it was a no brainer as the tickets are hard to come by, especially on the start/finish line.

Hi John,
Have fun at the 500, if you've never been to the 500 before, or never seen the speedway, its well worth the trip.  I'm a veteran of thirty Indy 500's.  Hell, if your looking for a good party just go to the area around the speedway the night before the 500.  They usually start queuing up the taffic on Sat. afternoon and the streets around the speedway (16th & Georgetown) just become a giant block party.  The local police are pretty laid back about the whole open alcohol container thing.  In recent years tickets have become pretty easy to come by.  It used to be one of the toughest tickets in all of sports but the CART/IRL split and subsequent downward spiral of Indycar racing have taken a heavy toll on the prestige and attendance of the event.  You'll see ticket scalpers outside the gates with big fistfulls of tickets going dirt cheap.  Last year there were huge blocks of empty seats up in the third turn near where we were sitting.  Shame because during the days of the CART turbo cars is was a  pretty mind blowing spectacle.  I've pretty much thrown in the towel on the 500, just think the IRL is useless.  The Mid-Ohio ALMS round is the week before, thats where I'll be headed.  Have fun in Hoosier land.

Will catch up with you at Le Mans John.

Yes the museum is worth a visit if you get chance. It may also have perhaps the best toilet facilities in the place. I remember wanting a dump when I was there in 1994, and was horrified when i went to the toilets in the paddock to find that they still didn't have door on the cubicles in there. So i went to the museum one instead !
