As you say Chris, everyone is entitled to their opinion.  Great, you love spec racing that tries to pass itself off for what was once a great discipline of the sport, good for you.  I (and Chop) still think its complete crap. As for my statement regarding the number of people at Indy, yes the 500 still draws a big crowd, a fraction of what it used to be, but by any other standards still a big crowd.  As for Sprint Cars leaving the ballpark?  They are not travelling at 210 MPH, and when they go out of the park, its in places where there is no fencing, because there are no spectators in the area!  I didn't watch the race Chris, had better things to do, like clean the toilet, I saw Dario's flying act on the news.  Trust me, I've been following oval track racing longer than you, and have seen alot more of it in person, hence the reason I think the IRL is the utter garbage that it is.  Talked to a guy in the know at Kentucky Speedway, he estimates there were actaully about 15,000 paying spectators there, the rest were complimentary and promotional passes.

Chris - the disrespect for the league isn't also directed at you.  If I had to guess, I'd think that you're most likely younger than I am (and much younger than Fax  ), and maybe weren't around during the halcyon days of a balanced schedule, big money and full fields in CART.  In Tony's drug-addled mind, what was wrong with CART was that he wasn't in charge and he's lied about his motivations since day one.  Every one of his supposed founding principles was a lie and what he's left in charge of is a pile of steaming something that nobody wants.   He's cut off his nose to spite his face and if not for nascar, F1 and now MotoGP, he'd be forced to face the financial reality.

He's trampled the USAC people he pretended to champion, all while selling out to the factory interests he professed to be saving the little guys from.  He's quite literally become everything he and his toadies railed against during the first 7-8 years of the split.  He single-handedly destoyed what was a very successful open wheel racing climate in the U.S. purely for the sake of power and greed and there are those of us who won't forget what he's done - ever.

That Tony George is a world class idiot bar none is a given. That the IRL is but a pathetic shadow of it's former self is also a universal truth. I rarely watch it these days (although I did see the Rolex Daytona Prototypes on TV last night and thought it was very soft and safe and therefore slightly laughable). But I do keep vague tabs on what's going on.

But I have to say that cars fly off the track in all sorts of motor racing, most recently I need only mention Kubica in Canada. People moan that F1 has way too much downforce but that doesn't stop the cars getting airborn sometimes. Thus I don't really agree with your contention that it wouldn't happen if the commercial and regulatory circumstances surrounding IRL were more ideal. Life generally isn't that straight forward and racing certainly isn't.

Yes, racing cars do become airbourne form time to time, especially involving single seaters.  My gripe is that its become almost a every week occurance with the IRL, and eventually something really awful is going to happen.  They dodged a bullet with Renna's fatal accident at Indy, the car went OVER a thirty foot high debris fence, landed in the first ten rows of the Northeast Vista, wiping out the seats there (if you go there you can see how many rows were replaced).  The rear of Dario's car landed on top of the wall at Kentucky Speedway, another three feet and it lands in the fencing separating the cars from the crowd.
