I'm going to France tomorrow and will be again traveliing through the night. Do you know if the petrol stations on the motorway are open all night because I found that the pay at the pumps did not accept any of my cards!!

Most motorway petrol stations are open 24/24. A few are only open limited hours. Best to fill up at the first opportunity, and not to run the tank very low. Just before each petrol station on the motorway is a sign telling you how far it is to the next one.
