Does anyone know what morte aux vache really means? I know what it means literally, but what does it mean in graffitti terms? It's sprayed on the wall of the little tunnel under the track at tertre rouge and it's been there ever since I first visited Le Mans in 1988. Who sprayed it? Why? I have wondered what it means ever since and it's been known to keep me awake at night on occasions. Hoping someone can help. Andy Z

Andy, I think this refers to the passing of the Group Vache category, shortly before the introduction of Groups C1 and C2. Those mothers could really move. The sight of the full grid pounding across the start line at the rolling start, hooves thumping, udders swinging would raise the hackles on any man, and send his testicles to places they hadn't been since leaving primary school. I am told the noise was staggering, rising above all the fizzing celtic bungholes, but ultimately the category was doomed to failure. Not least, the pong was f*****g staggering, and total loss of traction on some of the corners led to some nasty offs. And then there was the franchise problems with the local burger and frites boys, I believe in it's penultimate year someone ate the race leader. Hope this helps. H

Hi Phil, Champagne bar at 9.00! Mind you, on past performance I'm more likely to be in a wheely bin by then. Are you doing the Welsh trip with PM again? H

http://ets.freetranslation.com/ translates it as "dead to the cows". Bable fish says it's "Died with the cow". Either way, not a pretty way to go.

You are lucky - I got told I had spread the rather nasty "thimbs up" disease earlier! Maybe General "Ahve" and his "Advnce Gaurd" are some elite French unit that will be providing security at MB this year?! Perhaps they are part of the "Republican Guard"?
