Record 2CV entry for UK’s only 24-hour race

Britain’s only Le Mans-style 24-hour motor race is to be staged at the Snetterton circuit in nocturnal Norfolk over the weekend of 18-19 June. It’s no ordinary day-night-day showdown either as the starting grid will be exclusively reserved for race-prepared versions of Citroen’s much-loved 2CV.

The eccentric twice-round-the-clock 2CV enduro was originally staged in Ireland but moved to the UK last summer and, building on that event’s success, this year’s Gate-A-Mation 24 Hour 2CV Endurance Race has attracted a record entry. Close to 40 war-painted 2CVs are expected to take the Saturday afternoon start, each car crewed by teams of three or four drivers.

Among those intrepid competitors gunning for glory in the spectacular and fiercely fought encounter are many 2CV racing regulars as well as guest drivers from as far away as New Zealand, Australia and the United States - all keen to experience one of the world’s wackiest races.

Drivers come from all walks of life; some are very experienced racers, but for others this may be their first ever motor race. Better known names include past winners Pete Sparrow and Gary Adnitt, BTCC boss Alan Gow, Edd Straw from Autosport Magazine and Anthony Feltham-White, BBC Top Gear’s ‘Racing Vicar’.

Spectators wishing to follow the wheel-to-wheel action through the night can camp at Snetterton over the weekend. The cost of a weekend pass, including camping, is £10 and groups can buy 10 tickets in advance for £50. The action starts with practice and qualifying on the afternoon and evening of Friday 18 June. The Gate-A-Mation 24-hour 2CV Endurance Race starts on Saturday afternoon and finishes 24 hours later at tea-time on Sunday.

You don't win Le Mans - you outlast it.

There's a 24 hour 2CV race at Spa-Francorchamps each year and I have followed that one for many years. It's not exactly like the real thing but still good fun to watch. I even think they are doing 25 hours, or no, these are the VW beetles.  Smiley
