Can anyone advise the best place to stay for the Classic. I wouldn't mind a campsite with chalets, or a reasonable cost hotel.

Hmmm  probably too late in the day to achieve much that is cheap and close by.  Try the campsite at Spay, I think they have chalets or statics, it's a municipal so contact through the Mayor's office.

I'd ring the Le Mans Tourist Office and ask them for some pointers as to what availability you'll find.

A friend of mine reckons for the 24 he doesn't book hotels he just turns up and trawls round the Brit Hotel, F1 etc. and usually finds a room - might be worth just turning up if you're brave....

You can try Le Point du Jour, St Cosme en Vairais (abt 35 mins from the track and well known to those who've done the Cavalcade)  02 43 97 55 17 - Porker-owning Petrolhead owner.  A friend of mine is staying there and he booked last week so there may still be a room.

You could also try

http://www.chateau-de-chanteloup.com/

but they may be full.
