My old man seems to think a horn sounds as cars enter the pit lane, also indicating how many cars are coming - so as to warn people in the pit lane e.g. horn sounds 2 times as 2 cars coming along pit lane
Tbh I have never heard this in all the years I've been going (only about 5!) and think he is referring to klaxon horns being let off by supporters..
who's right?

There is a pit lane buzzer which is sounded as a car enters the pits, presumably it's a light beem so it will be triggered by each car that goes past it.
You hear it quite a lot in the background of the radio commentary.

Virtually every racing circuit on the planet has some kind of siren or horn that goes off when a car enters or leaves the pit lane. Pretty common sense safety stuff. Fax

I'd have thought the sound of the cars was noise enough!

At Snetterton it used to be an old guy, sitting on a chair just pressing a button when the car drove past - hopefully the ACO has a bit more technology!

Hi Dub, No, didn't mean to sound like a smart-ass, just that after a while if you spend enough time around racing circuits its gets to be part of the background noise. You would think that most people in the pit lane or paddock would have enough sense to keep their eyes and ears open for cars rolling through, but it never fails, there's always somebody just wondering around not paying attention. Once saw a guy standing, looking up the pit lane at Mid-Ohio, blocking Ron Fellows Vette from leaving the pits, Ron blipped the throttle and the dude jumped about three feet in the air, about pissed myself laughing. I was working in the pit lane at Donnington for the European GP when Ayrton Senna came through without stopping to set the fastest lap of the race. He must have been doing about 140mph, the car bottoming out all the way down! Now that was scarry, needless to say before pit lane speed limits were introduced

The horn has been a feature since the new pits in 1991. In fact it's not just one horn but a pole stacked with a half dozen of them. They are located about 2/3 of the way down the pitlane on the island by the stairs to the tunnel.
If, like me, you are working in the pitlane the horn is a very welcome warning of approaching traffic.
