The upcoming full-length cinema documentary, McQueen the Man & Le Mans will receive a Cannes Film Festival Worldwide Premiere. The film will be shown as part of the Cannes Classics section of the world’s most prestigious and famous film festival on Saturday May 16th to an audience which will include the late star’s son Chad McQueen.image001
The film covers not only Steve McQueen’s passion and obsession to make the ultimate motor racing movie, but also the turbulent financial and personal problems he was facing at the time. It includes previously unseen footage including material from the long lost “rushes” of the film and powerfully uses the last audio interview McQueen gave before his untimely death in 1980.
The film is based on an idea by veteran motor racing broadcaster and journalist, Andrew Marriott, whose vision and research has, over the last 18 months, been crafted into the film by Directors John McKenna and Gabriel Clarke. Like Andrew, both have previously worked in television and this is their first film. To be selected for Cannes is considered a huge accolade in the cinema industry. The film will be launched to a worldwide cinema audience in November of this year.
To produce the film, The Man & Le Mans team interviewed actors, race drivers, film technicians and movie management who were all involved in the original movie in the summer of 1970. The drivers include five times Le Mans winner Derek Bell, David Piper, who lost a leg in a filming accident, and the late Jonathan Williams who drove the Porsche 908 camera car in the actual race.
The team tracked down German actor Sigi Rauch, who played the Ferrari driver Eric Stahler, and Swedish actress Louise Edling who played Mrs Ann Ritter in the film. Both give fascinating insights into Steve McQueen, as does his personal mechanic Haig Altournian. Original screenwriters, personal assistants and producers all give their side of the story, but perhaps the most moving testaments come from Steve’s wife of the time Neile Adams and their son Chad, who was on the set aged ten years old. Chad revisited Le Mans last year with the film makers to re-live some burning memories.
The interviews are interwoven with great period footage from the original film, and action from the 2014 Le Mans Hour race and Le Mans Classic. The racing footage includes some of the long lost rushes, which were tracked down by the film’s archivist Richard Wiseman after being lost for over 40 years.
