Porsche to Double Up in 2014

Porsche motorsport boss Hartmut Kristen confirmed today in Bahrain that the marque will continue to enter a pair of works-backed, Manthey-run 911s in the WEC’s GTE Pro class in 2014, alongside the LMP1s run out of Weissach.

Kristen also said that while no arrangements for 2014-spec WEC customer cars were finalised yet, the team was talking to current customers, including Proton Competition and Imsa Matmut, about next season. He also dispelled concerns that Porsche Motorsport would not have the capacity to build enough new chassis ahead of the start of the season, saying that every team they’re talking to will be able to be on the grid at Silverstone next Easter with a 2014 car.

TUSC teams Core Autosport (two cars) and Falken Motorsport (one car) will have works backing in the US, but Kristen said neither of the two 2013 works cars would be upgraded to 2014 spec, as it’s just as easy to build new chassis. He added that one of the primary aims of the upgrade was to iron out some issues to make the car easier for amateur customer drivers to handle. He described the issues as ‘something the pro drivers could live with’, however the two-year homologation cycle means that next year GTE Pro and GTE Am cars will effectively be the same spec.
