Title: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Brad Zarse on July 20, 2009, 02:06:02 am http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77088
Shocking news - I was at Brands today, and was hoping the news would be better. This is a shocking reminder that the passtime we know and love is dangerous, and even the safest, most modern of drivers can be affected. Drivers put their lives on the line for our entertainment. We all enjoy a good time, but sometimes these things bite you in the backside and remind you that there are bigger things at stake than our entertainment. A young talent wiped out in the most freakish of incidents. Be as safe as you can out there guys. RIP Henry Surtees. Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... R.I.P. henry Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Lawnmower Man on July 20, 2009, 08:39:49 am We all know the dangers. But it doesn't make it less sad.
RIP Henry. Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Andy Zarse on July 20, 2009, 09:52:25 am Terrible news.
I had a text from a friend earlier this morning, he and his wife have worked for BARC for years. He was at Henry's first race in France and had known him since he was fourteen when he started off in Ginetta Juniors, then through FBMW and FRenault. He's very upset, as I would imagine are very many people. A freak accident by all accounts, I guess you can't legislate against this kind of thing happening, but nonetheless, a tradgedy by any standards. RIP Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Werner on July 20, 2009, 02:57:51 pm Just saw this on youtube - incredible bad luck! There was nothing he could do, accidents like this will unfortunately always happen. My thoughts are with his friends and relatives - RIP
Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Bobblehat on July 20, 2009, 03:34:25 pm Met Henry a few times when he was testing with Nexa with Tom and also, in a horrid twist of fate, Jack Clarke.
A very pleasent young chap. Very tragic news. RIP Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Nordic on July 20, 2009, 07:27:43 pm Very tragic news. I did not realise that he was a Former Worth School pupil, one of the local boarding schools to were I live.
Ironic that his father survived 2 careers when the sport was deemed to be less safe, only for his son to be taken in such a freak way. Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Piglet on July 20, 2009, 09:17:20 pm For obvious reasons I can't make any comment but it was a dreadful, horrible accident and my heart goes out to Henry's family and friends and also to Jack Clarke and his family at this awful time for them.
I also find it dreadfully ironic that John Surtees survived such a dangerous period in motorsport to lose his only son in a period of time where motorsport is arguably safer than it has ever been. Those of us involved know that the sport is dangerous, but it doesn't make these moments any easier. RIP Henry :( Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: hgb on July 20, 2009, 09:47:02 pm RIP Henry Surtees.
My deep condolences to the friends and family. As Piglet said, it's a tragedy that his father must lose his son in a seamingly saver motorsport period, very disturbing. Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: mgmark on July 20, 2009, 11:36:05 pm Just watched the footage - an incredible stroke of the circumstances conspiring to make up that awful combination of the wrong place at the wrong - literally - instant in time.
Heart goes out to all involved, but particularly to John Surtees, who I watched stand on the balcony of Huntingdon town hall and address the assembled crowd at last year's 50th anniversary celebrations for Lola, not just as someone who had achieved a great deal in motorsport, much of it with Lola, but also as the proud father of his son entering Formula Two....RIP Mark Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Chris24 on July 21, 2009, 02:16:19 am A very freak accident. I had a very good day yesterday as a friend of mine won the European stock car title, followed by watching Vinnies Vice. But my joy was short lived when I read about Henry's accident when I got home at 4.00 am
Only a fortnight ago i took these photos of Henry at Goodwood. R.I.P Henry and my thoughts are with John and his mother Jane. Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: Brad Zarse on July 23, 2009, 09:36:43 pm unashamedly lifted from KK's facebook page.

I fine article I think. Title: Re: RIP Henry Surtees... Post by: DickieAttwood on August 30, 2009, 08:49:26 pm Yes.
I was very sad to hear the news and this is the first time I've mentioned it to anyone - not even spoken to my race friends about it, reading Johns words is a relief somehow. Thanks for posting that Nordic. D.A. |
