Title: Mystery!
Post by: Lord Steve on June 02, 2009, 09:47:01 pm
Can anyone help solve a mystery?
Perhaps 6-7 years ago we were camped on the Maison Blanche annexe (before they moved the concrete wall to the side of the road) and in the early hours of Sunday morning I was trying to catch a bit of kip when the tent seemed to lift of the ground after an almighty bang. I think I felt the concussion more than heard the bang.
Car alarms went off and people staggered to their feet to see what had happened. I walked over to the sound of hilarious laughter (somewhere in the vicinity of The W*nkers Arms) and it was explained to me that the guilty party had exploded a plastic bag full of gas by igniting it with a spark from a car battery through a length of two-core flex inserted into said bag.
Was that anyone on here and what gas was it?

Steve

Not guilty, but probably propane and O2.

I know Hyrdogen and O2 goes off with an <almighty> bang. And I mean <almighty>

Cheers for the pointer. ;)

I've heard Oxy-Acetylene works pretty well.

Could have been an exploding chicken!?!?

..or a tent.

They are a plastic bag of sorts and are often filled with flammable gas!

We have camped there a few times, and I can remember some people who used to start bonfires in the Oildrum rubbish bins, then drop camping gaz cylinders into it when it was burning nicely :)

They used to go with a pretty big bang  >:D

In 2004 we were on BSJ and close to us were a Dutch group who had a couple of what can only be described as 'Super Guns'.

Basically crow scarer type gas guns.

The bigger one was about 5ft long and about 10in diameter.

They loaded it with a large hessian sack full of rags or straw to provide the resistance not present with a usual crow scarer. The sack was tethered to it so only flew a yard or two.

When it went off the result was much as you describe Steve; earth shaking!

We had a batch of very very good fireworks about five years back. We let the first off just as the Band on the lotus club stage finished. The applause rumbled across MB to Houx and the singer on stage used the F word. It set off loads of alarms on Bleu Sud. Certainly loader than any Oxy-Ace bomb I have ever made over the years. It was epic. We saved one for the year after and let it off on the friday night at the classic- It didn't go down very well with our fellow campers ::)

A blast from the past, "The w**k*rs Arms"  always erected their Bar, including draught beer, pool table, sat tv and fruit machines by the wall the ACO used to brake through for the overflow, they were setting the things off all week, very impressive too, a black bin bag would rise around 100 foot attatched by the ignition wire, then when they set it off, what an explosion.

They were also the first that we saw with a large swimming pool erected with scaffolding and marine ply, bet they could not imagine the implications of what they had started.

I spoke with the guy a few years ago when they had down sized dramaticly and he said that interest amongst his crew had wained, shame really as they had a great set up.

Hmmm... especially the cast metal ones. We did one on KN a few years back. It was like time stopped for a second with a white out flash... always wondered where all the metal went? :o
