Title: Cars your Dad had!
Post by: Lord Steve on May 26, 2009, 09:01:51 pm
Just a little motoring related side issue to fill in the next two weeks.

Can you remember cars that your Dad had and what were your favourites.....?

Mine:
Austin Maxi, Austin Ambassador and a Morris Marina. Oh and a Mini Cooper!

I know, I know but my Dad, God bless him, was an Austin / Morris / BMC / British Leyland / Rover dealer.

He did, however borrow Chris Rea's dad's Rolls Royce for a week. That was fun being taken to school in it!!

He has some nice old buses on "that" list

Austin A40 Farina
Vauxhall Viva
Ford Sierra

How far back should I go?

Dad had buggerall money and lots of very old cars over the years

Morris 8, Ford Prefect, BSA Dandy (sometimes no car at all!) really much older Fords that showed a family resemblance to the early Prefect, Austin A40 Devon, Austin A40 Somerset, Austin Seven, Austin Big Seven, Austin Ten, Various Hillman products including a gorgeous Drop Head coupe (which dad's mate then proceeded to destroy by braking when dad was trying to tow start him and ripped the body off the chassis)

Then he got modern

An Austin A35 (in which I learnt to drive) A Hillman Imp, An Austin 1100, A Triumph Herald or two. He had a Ford Escort van with windows in (took my young son around Scotland in that with him and mom) various others which I forget now (privilege of getting damned old, sorry) He had my wife's old M2 Ford Escort later followed by an 1500 Dolomite.

Then he got too ill to drive, but by heck he'd had a few hadn't he.

Reminds me of this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13JK5kChbRw

So - we were so poor we had a (http://www.motorbase.com/uploads/2008/10/14/fs_copy_of______024.jpg) - light blue with a white go faster stripe (reg LHT _ _ _)

still scares me, only thing i rememmber is that you can drive along at a high speed (50mph -tops) with the door slid back (so it was wide open). When you broke, the door use to slam shut, if anything in the way - just like a mobile guillotine  ;D

Oh yea - also

Moggie Traveller
Hillman Avenger
Fiat Poski Fiat (AHHHHHHHH)
and other crap (more to add as I remember in my nightmares)

1930 Norton
2 big 1950's American cars when we lived in South America in the late 50's/60's, I'll try and find some photos to identify them.
Riley Pathfinder
Fiat 600
Renault r8
Rover 2000
Peugeot 504 estate
Peugeot 504 Ti  x2
Renault Clio, which my Mun still runs.

My favourite was the first 504 Ti, quick car for the time, I was allowed to drive it when I was 18, I got in a lot of trouble with that one, I broke the prop shaft. ;D

If we're just talking about what my dad had during my lifetime, it wasn't an exciting list (and I get confused as to what were his cars in his youth and which were his 3 brothers).  Anyway there was a mid 70s Cougar up until about 1978, followed by a 1976 Audi Fox (badged as Audi 80 in Europe), and an early 80s Ford F100 pickup to get through the 1980s.  A Chevy Corsica and Chevy Citation II replaced them in the early 90s.   Since then, it's included a Ford Escort wagon, a Mazda pickup, and a Kia Rio.

Of those my favorite is the Corsica, if only because I split my time in high school driving that and the Citation, which was a piece of junk.  Of course, since my first car was a ten year old but low mileage 1981 Escort, I couldn't complain too much.  That car was my grandfather's and with only 32,000 miles put on in the first 10 years, the gaskets had dry-rotted.

First car I remember my old man getting was a brand new 2.0 Granada in 1977; it was like being Cowley in the Professionals (OK, so his was a 3.0L, but they both had vinyl roofs, OK? :)) Before that, we had a series of Datsuns (including a 1.4L 120Y coupe which my Mum drove, probably the nearest thing they ever got to a performance car).

After that he had a Fiesta "Million" special edition 1.1 with a pop-up sunroof and special side stripe (woo hoo), an Escort 1.6 velour-tastic Ghia, a succession of turgid vans (such as brown Maestros, or even a bright orange Simca whose floor rusted away so you could see the road through the passenger footwell), then ended up down the Rover "man wearing a hat" brigade with a couple of 200-series ones, and has now ended his motoring days in a Yaris.

Not exactly petrolhead heaven then!

I can't claim to have paid much attention to the Japanese and Australian production line staples - Holden Kingswoods and Commodores, and Mitsi Galants - we had while I was growing up but I do remember the DeSoto Deluxe S-11 that my step-father bought as a 'project'.  We spent a summer stripping the paint off it with paint stripper and screwdrivers after which Mike got bored with it and it sat in the garage unloved until Mum told Mike to get rid of it.  I often wonder where it ended up.

Not an exhaustive list as the memory is not as good as it was but in the 60's and early '70's (when I was in my early teens):

Standard Vanguard
Jaguar 420G
Jaguar Mk 10
Ford Escort MK1 estate
Rover P5B Coupe
Audi 100 coupe S
Merc 350sl
Merc 450slc

He was a secondhand car dealer at the time and cemented a passion in me for all things automotive. Fortunately from a sartorial point of view I never much liked the 'Arfur Daley' style fur lined jackets that seemed to go with involvement in the business at that time.

I think the Escort was a bit of an aberration. He then went into antiques for some reason and succumbed to several Volvo estates, poor fella.

Mazda 818 Coupe
Dacia pick up (the first i got to drive. 110 km/h top speed)
Skoda Octavia
Honda CR-V van

I was around RS Fords when a kid, my dad rallied in a 1500 pre-xflow Anglia, then a MkI Escort Twin-cam that became an RS2000 when the Lotus engine became temperamental - he bought a type 49 shell from Boreham when they brought out the MkII and built a Mexico out of a crashed road car and used that as his everyday car for years. That would be worth a small fortune now !!

They then went to Larton (L.A.D.) built Samba's and then 205's - little flying machines with fantastic engines.

Before that he had a Stiletto, a Cortina GT as road cars - after the Mex he had a MkII Ghia, very civilised !!

The other half of my family all had Alfa Romeo's that always seemed to swap hands regularly - I remember a 'Sud Ti or two, a Sprint and Alfetta GT and GTV, that's where my love of Alfa's comes from.

Well, here we go, from the ones I know about:

Jointly owned and run by him and his 3 brothers during WW2, underage, and without parents knowledge - Citroen Traction Avant.
Bundle of stuff probably after that - need to ask him what there was.
Before I was born - the first post-war Aston Martin, built on a Humber staff car chassis - why, oh why, did you ever sell that....
To replace it in 1959 with a new - Isetta Bubble Car when I was born - WTF!!!!

Followed from the early 1960s to the present day by a genealogy of:

Ford Corsair
Austin 3 Litre
Ford Cortina Mk II
Ford Cortina Mk III
Ford Granada Mk I
Ford Sierra
Ford Mondeo
Honda Civic (current)

Plus Mum's cars from about 1960-odd

Humber Hawk
Mini Mk I (with sliding windows and floor start button)
Ford Anglia
Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible
MGB GT (mine originally)
Honda CRX (current)

And other influences:

Primary School - blonde lady teacher with a Lotus Elan, and in the Curborough paddock pushing a GT40 to the start line
Secondary School - couple of teachers - MGB GT, TR4a, plus next door neighbour giving a me a daily lift there in the early to mid-70s - Alfa 2000 GTV Bertone, Lotus Elan, Jaguar XJ6, Range Rover, Lotus Europa, plus helping him rebuild a Berkeley SE328.

MG Mark

My dear Dad always hankered after a Porsche 911 but never took the plunge given his responsibilities to us small people. He did, however, dip his toe into the 'sporty' car look with this little beauty. Not his actual car but correct year and colour.....

Minivan
Renault Dauphine
Austin A40
Wolseley 1500 x 2
Vauxhall Viva HB

Morris Marina x 3 (Actually, the last one may have been an Ital!)
Vauxhall Cavalier x 4

Yes, he was a sales rep, and yes, he bought the MGF when he retired and the Holden when he emigrated to Australia. He took the MGF with him too.
