As some of you may know I am a time served joiner and I have been in the same job for 7 years now  :o

Although the job is ok im not sure its what I want to do forever.

Im not tied down with a mortgage or loans or anything and im 24 so....

The chance has come up to try a 4 year mechanial apprentiship with spirit aerosystems at prestwick airport.

Go for it that kind of job can take round the world, friend of mine did the same about 10 years ago now and he has never looked back.

Didn't Elvis stop at Prestwick? Must be worth a shot, you never know who you may meet :)

I guess you could always go back to joining if it really didn't work out. Follow your heart.

From someone in light blue, we're very short of them, as are the civvy companies are short of them.  At 24, you might want to think about testing the water with the uniformed side first (RAF or AAC) - all the training and licensing comes with it at no extra cost and the money is good fromt the outset - if that doesn't appeal though then go the civvy route.

Been at the same job for 23 yrs.now.Love the job,but it SUCKS !The fun is gone,and the pay sucks worst than ever.

Had a chance to go to work at BellSouth,through a friend 18 yrs.ago.
Was afraid to make a change and leave the comfort and security of what I had.

I still kick my self right in the ARSE every Friday on the way to the bank.

Did my apprentiship at BA - LHR - only building and plant section, should have use it more but it was good.

If your getting training and in these times of hardship and unemployment, what have you got to loose?

if you nothing holding you back no loans nothing do it. If my parents where not moving to france id be there like a shot but ive got to move out and be sensible  ::)

I would say go for it.... and have a chat to Leigh A from Team JPC while at LM. Thats his field and he looks to have a jolly time ;D

the only chances you will regret later is the ones you don´t take.
it is in the unsecure moments you realy learn who you are.

Mike, just do it, you know it makes sense, as long as you can take vacations in June, think you will be fine.

My advice is to go for it, with things the way they are at the moment you will have a safe job for the years you are training.

Once trained up, my advise is to go contracting, hopefully things in the industry will pick up buy then, its the only way to make good money and see the world with outer people paying you to do it.

Not long now? Brian my guess is that when "not long now" actually becomes "now" you will be as miserable as sin and a short tempered wretched nuisance to those around you, Menorca or not.  :(

Do it my friend....I personally have never been able to stand the "If Only" scenario and have changed my career path before, now I have two disciplines which has helped me a lot in the current climate.

Then a neighbour of mine (struggling with an engine strip and rebuild which I put him right on) suggested that I ought to come and join him, working for the AA.
(yes he was struggling...)

After discussing the total change in lifestyle with the gaffer, I did, got through the interviews and never looked back

I had the best twenty eight years of my life by changing directions

The real irony is  that my original plan A was to join the RAF and become an aircraft technician but I failed a medical soon after getting married

Andy, I think you may be right mate, the nearer it gets the thoughts bloody fool comes to mind. But we are all going on the p*ss on the Saturday night before they all depart on the Sunday, so that may numb the pain.

I started in aviation many years back in the Navy's Fleet Air Arm as an Apprentice, served twenty years,  then joined joined Civil Aviation as a Licensed Aircraft Engineer, the best decision of my life, I have always been in work, and visited most of the world and made many lifelong friends. You will never be a millionaire but you can have a good life. I can still get all the work I want and I am approaching eighty years! and still have the energy for Le Mans. Go for it Lad!.
