Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: Lord Pig-Pen on February 22, 2009, 08:52:48 pm Ladies and Gentlemen, The Brethren have some news that you may be pleased to hear.
Rusty and I took a roadtrip to Wales on Saturday to look at something rather special..... that being The Popemobile. ;D Negotiations had been ongoing since the Ebay auction ended and a viewing and test drive were required. We went, we saw, I drove and a deposit has been placed. (I Overtook a cyclist!) She will be ours in the next few weeks and will reside at Pig Pen Towers and be subject to some extensive refurbishment of the somewhat tired interior will be undertaken. I have never seen a TK cab, chassis and engine in such fine order. It really is amazing and makes it obvious that the 15000 miles on the clock in the immaculate dash are true. We have bought a piece of both RAF and Le Mans history and will fettle, restore and improve to keep her rolling for many years..... but my god is it slow.... the drive back, M4, A34, M3, M27, A31 will be long and leisurely ( My mechanic mate is following in the technical support vehicle ) and will culminate in a welcoming ceremony at my local in the forest. Watch this space for updates! PP Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: tn*c on February 22, 2009, 09:05:16 pm Awesome mate you should have dropped in! We are 2 mins in car from the A34. Albeit 20mins in the Popemobile!
Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: Lorry on February 22, 2009, 09:08:10 pm I'm sure I speak for everyone, when I say I'm very pleased that the Popemobile has found a suitable new home.
I'm sure its going to need some tender loving care, but anyone who can assess the condition of a Bedford TK cab, chassis and engine must have a hidden past that could prove useful Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: nopanic - neil on February 22, 2009, 09:12:48 pm fantastic news, was only thinking the other day what happened to the pope mobile (when I posted the pope motorbike pic) Bass Charrington use to run loads of them in the 70’s to deliver beer. So sounds like it indestructible, also seen ones posted on eBay fitted with power steering and extra power.
Good luck. Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: powermite on February 22, 2009, 09:20:40 pm Great news indeed.

which engine does she (the Popemobile of course, Polish princess power plants are less readily assessed, I may need to do some research there!) have, is it the diesel or the wonderful all singing Bedford petrol engine (where the hell did I put that spare dizzy??) Way back in the mists of time I passed my HGV in a TK, always had a soft spot for the beasties since then. (Did ALL my lessons in a very fast petrol RL then had no choice but to use the TK on test day, blooming RL had a whoopsie again...) Happy days Anyway congratulations mon ami, wont need to hide under any trees with her around when it is time for a weeeee, legit "up against a tyre" jobbie. Presumably Rusty is hard at work, nose to grindstone working up a new livery for the beast. Skulls and crossed cutlasses figuring in her logo??? I don't know about others but if you fancied having a restoration fund I'd put a few quid in. It truly is a piece of history and I imagine the restoration is going to eat some pennies... I'm glad to see the old girl's Le Mans history will live on and she didn't end up as a hen night party bus. Just what do you think it'll be used for the other 51 weeks of the year? Well, 2 of the 51 weeks will be getting to Le Mans and back in good, leisurely fashion I would think. Great news, look forward to seeing it on BN. To preserve the lineage of history, I should imagine a blend of the RAF meets the Popemobile meets the Brethren a la Black Sabbath would be quite appropriate..... I do hope this spurs Mr Z into similar action - the combination of this and the Commer together at Le Mans should be beyond compare... Did the purchase of the Popemobile include the Flag pole? And more importantly did it include the Canadian Maple Leaf and Stars & Stripes (Flags) which have flown high and proud on MB since 2001? Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: nickliv on February 23, 2009, 09:29:31 am As it's an old control tower, do you want me to pinch some obsolete kit from work for it?
Our Flight progress strips (The small plastic blocks we write aircrafts details on) are shortly to be replaced with an electronic version. So some of those should be available. (Just over a years time IIRC, that's a 'quick ATC project.... ::)) although a pinboard map of the circuit with pins denoting the location of various members of Brethren might be more applicable to its RAF heyday. I'm pretty certain I won't be able to get hold of a radar I'm afraid. Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: Andy Zarse on February 23, 2009, 11:40:39 am I do hope this spurs Mr Z into similar action - the combination of this and the Commer together at Le Mans should be beyond compare... MG Mark Regrettably, I fear not Mark. Rex told me this news recently on a state visit to Zarse Towers. I have to say whilst I echo the sentiments of all on here, the Commer, for one, is deeply unhappy about matters. Setting aside the fact that the Commer probably won't be going this year as one of the boys just bought a Mercedes Sprinter, have you considered the socio-economic grouping issues? You see, for around fifty-odd years Bedford and Commer were bitter rivals . They were near-neighbours and long term commercial enemies, scowling at each other from either side of the M1. Commer were based in stylish upmarket Dunstable, whilst Bedford's factory was in dreary downmarket Luton. The difference was reflected in the products too. Bedford were a typical General Motors product; built to a price with the ability to do the job, but gave no more than absolutely necessary. They were never built as well or as innovatively as Commers. Commer were all about contemporary design and cutting-edge engineering solutions such as the fabulously exotic TS4 two-stroke engines and their clever super-slick gearboxes. They always exceeded their design spec, their strength was legendary and could take abuse like nothing else. In essence they were a far superior product to anything Bedford could come up with. Bedford on the other hand, had a great dealer network and were sold on low price. They were, I suppose, ubiquitous, or as the Commer likes to say, "as common as muck". Such is the environment in which prejudice is born. Enmity and longtime dislike flows in the blood, it's almost genetic, similar to pursuading Alf Garnet to stop calling black people "nignogs". You might be able to stop him using the word, but he'll still be thinking it. These vehicles come from opposite side of the tracks, with little in common. I'd go so far as to say the Commer is a racist van who will look down her nose at the TK. Frankly I can't see them getting along too well. :( Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: Andy Zarse on February 23, 2009, 11:43:24 am I don't know about others but if you fancied having a restoration fund I'd put a few quid in. I will post pics soon. PP [/quote] There must be a viable alternative to the hopeless Zenith carb, perhaps something is available from Weber? I reckon junking the one on the Commer and buying the Weber kit increased performance by a good 25%, and fuel economy by a similar margin. Easily the best mod I've ever done. I'll have a look into it. We have purchased the Popemobile between a number of us (not sure how many yet but will be core members so 6 probably) with a view to upgrading her facilities and using her as our annual team kit hauler and as SGT MJR Chop mentioned earlier The Brethren Mobile Command and Control Centre Some owners will be sleeping in her and others are happy with tenting it so she wont be cramed full of snoring, farting, beer filled Brethren. The livery is under discussion so cant say much more about that. She will be centre of our setup and the roof terrace will house all the sound and lighting gear and the DJ's. I think she will look stunning! I am going to be driver and official keeper and she will live at PP Towers if she will fit down the lane, otherwise, at my mates farm. Plans are to use her as often as possible and maybe make some money with her. A local Polo team owner has already shown an interest in using her for their annual 3 day tournament as a judges box and I am looking to get her into the military vehicle line up at The Great Dorset Steam Fair... then there is the Goodwood Revival and such events. Will be fun to have something to display and sleep in. Regarding the offer of period equipment, I am looking to reduce weight as she is so painfully slow. The body is a mix of steel and Ali and is fully soundproofed, the walls are 4" thick and stuffed with something and the ceilings are soundproof tiles which appear to be 2" thick. All the glazing in the control tower is what looks to be toughened glass and the roof terrace railings are galv. steel so may well be replaced with Ali ones (Fabricating mate has offered to make new for nothing if his Company name gets on her somewhere). I have looked into a carb conversion but so far have drawn a blank. No conversions appear to have been made for that engine so may look into getting a manifold made and a twin choke downdraught Weber of some description installed. Possibility of a stainless exhaust and manifold being made too (by the same dude that will do the railings. Finally a set of bling Horsebox wheeltrims to tidy the wheels up. Oh... and several of the access hatches are scruffy Ply so will be changed for Ali on timber frames. She will be cracking when finished. ;D Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: Lord Pig-Pen on February 23, 2009, 11:02:41 pm I have just emailed The Great Doset Steam Fair with a request to be considered as an exhibit in the military line up.
Fingers crossed... and its free!! Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: Lord Pig-Pen on February 23, 2009, 11:18:09 pm Oh and finally... Private Tray Boy is alive and well in Royal Tunbridge Wells.
I think he will make an excellent Pope and can picture him sat on the roof in his underpants surveying his Vatican. This is subject to team approval obviously... but he will get my vote! ;D Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: Gordonwr on February 23, 2009, 11:27:12 pm The trip wouldn't be the same without it at LM, and it sounds like the same engine that I used to strip down after I served my army apprenticeship all those years ago !!
Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: mgmark on February 23, 2009, 11:35:07 pm I do hope this spurs Mr Z into similar action - the combination of this and the Commer together at Le Mans should be beyond compare... MG Mark Regrettably, I fear not Mark.....Frankly I can't see them getting along too well. :( Andy, I am, of course, torn between these two, both sturdy and steadfast icons of UK industry and achievement, as they are in their own endearing ways. The Bedford would provide an outstanding opportunity to indulge in some gratuitous firing of Verey and Schermuley flares from the old mobile control tower into the surrounding plebiscite of BN in the best "damn the torpedoes and repel boarders" traditions. Quite fitting, given the likely additions to the Bedford of The Brethren's usual battle adornments of the Merchant Navy and RAF Ensigns and the White Star pennant, accompanied by stirring accoutrements of film and musical accompaniment. Such a platform would not, of course, befit the Commer's superior social status, which would emulate that of a suitably refined detachment status, mobile Officers Mess to retreat to afterwards. And, yes, I had considered the socio-economic groupings, concluding that the Commer would, indeed, be the most appropriate flagship to represent the B and C1 professional grades (or whatever they are called these days) rather than other grades of a more "manual" nature. I had made allowance for this in my comment on the now (apparently) erroneous assumption that the mighty Commer (and her custodian) would rise above the situation, and neatly complement the comparatively rudimentary nature of the Bedford and provide a suitable cross-sectional representation of such vehicles, with a "bugger that, I'm not letting the side down" clarion call. But seemingly not, and the base, easy attractions of - of all things - a Mercedes Sprinter appear to be too tempting. A shame, as the legend already appears to have descended to gutter press sniping level before any engagement on the field of conflict, and the battle honour of "BN 2009" assigned to one of them, other than by default of non-appearance, would have a certain cachet and ring to it....... MG Mark After 3 1/2 yrs in Naval school I never signed up. Although in October I did do a Ceremonial March Past in Hamble. I agree with everything you said. Leftie Snr (Vernon) worked in these 'Popemobiles' and developed the 'BABS' and REBECCA landing systems. Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile for sale Post by: badgered1 on February 24, 2009, 04:57:22 am That is great news! I took a good look at it when I was at the 2004 Lemans and read the poster board they had on display. I look forward to seeing the refurbishment.

Wouldn't a gas turbine be more appropriate? It is hatefully slow until it gets moving... when I overtook they cyclist I was doing about 20mph but once you get to 30+ she kicks her heels and starts to gallop. A carb change is planned as the Zenith? is tiny and a decent Weber twin, like Nick has offered would help. The Diesel options offer a similar performance in lower gears but with higher top end and economy. The popempbile is the luxury 4 speed so a box change would be needed too... I say leave her as she is for the time being and then make plans.Would a diesel increase the cruising speed? as a recall that it was a bit slow I drove back from Andover to home at 50 today as a test and it was ok... so those lovely french roads... windows down... I think we can live with 50mph. Jim "The Pope" said simon had 60mph once but it was scary. "Fcukin sh*t myself " was his description... we shall see. As for the name, I think this is all back to front. The Brethren should be renamed, probably to the Brothers, to maintain the religious theme. So this now makes Rex Cardinal Pig Pen, and there can be no Lady PP, but there is scope for a Mrs Doyle (if you remember Father Ted), and several volunteers for Father Jack Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Barry on March 07, 2009, 12:47:47 pm The Brethren is surely an appropiate name, given the religious connections of the name.

First stop (apart from fuel!!) is my local, The Rising Sun, Wootton where it would be good to have a welcoming party waiting for the grand arrival. All the locals are primed and ready but it would be good to have a few CA'ers there too... with cameras. Andy Zarse, JP Chenet and Vegas! have already expressed an interest and Rusty will be along too so we could make a mini event of it.. I can accomodate a few, Andy mentioned bringing the Commer and there is tent room at PP Towers and B&B nearby. I can book our local Indian (who will hopefully be sponsors of The Popemobile) and a jolly good piss up can be had. I will need it after the drive home ;D What do you lot think? However we have some trade plates to use from the Popes so all should be cool... a little rule bending is always fun. Its Insured, Mot'd and the red and whites cover the tax as I am delivering it for the owners who have their own reasons for not being able to drive it. It will still be in their name as the hopelessly slow DVLA system wont even have received the document... as it wont have been posted ;D A list of essentials for the trip has been made but any suggestions are welcome. She has been out today to my local for a lunchtime treat and appears to gather a crowd wherever she is parked.
Russ, Wooly and Clive got home in one piece today on the bikes and a good weekend was had by all. Cheers to the Wills' for their food and booze last nite. Much appreciated ;D I feel totally knackered.. Jim was right when he squeezed my arm muscle before the test drive and said " They'll get bigger"... My Buttocks ache from the clutch, throttle and cornering ass bracing, as does my back. Who needs to go to a Gym... buy a Popemobile. I love her. Myself, Lady PP and Wooly went up to Wales on Friday, stayed over, had a night out with The Pope crew, had a superb Indian, restles sleep and then undertook the mission in question. I have still work out the MPG for the 160 mile trip but it was good... as she was unladen. I hit 58 at one point and managed 45 - 50 most of the way on the M4, which is actually nicer than lower speed driving because the wind resistance lifts the front and gives much lighter steering and much less body roll. She was not thrashed at any point and hills are 25mph in 3rd, if you try and do 30mph its revving too high for my liking and once you reach flat road 30 in 4th is fine to build up speed... basically 3rd gear is crap. The highlight... and most stressful bit of the whole journey was the A35 from Lyndhurst to home. 8 miles of trundle road with so many fans of her following with no way of getting past. The snake of cars behind was as long as mirrors could see and no attempt to go faster was made just because ;D The stressful bit came from the alternator light glowing ( a slipping belt), being so close to home and knowing how many people were waiting for the arrival. We made it in one piece and she behaved faultlessly. As Jim "The Pope" said.... she hates hills and loves petrol. A special thanks goes to Wooley "if I ever read Caution Jet Thrust again" for tail gunning for 160 miles and Lady pp for her help on the trip back, an extra set of eyes is always good and hers were spot on, and not a winge the whole way. Cheers Honey. That about sums it up really. The Popemobile is in safe hands. That is all I say ;D Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Lord Pig-Pen on April 11, 2009, 03:48:11 am She had some spanner attention today. The belts that run the fan, water pump and Alternator were as slack as a wizards sleeve and the charge/alt" light had been glowing since the A 34 on the home trip.
Guess our tree cutting drive drained her reserves... half hour on tick over with the volt light on full glow. I think that some modern belts will help as the ones on her are skinnier than a super model and sit so deep in the pulleys... time for a new set of Gates fat belts to keep it all moving. It was the first time for soooooo long that I have worked on something so "real"...a socket and a bar was all that was needed.... no shrouds to remove, no stupid wires to remove, just sit on the chassis rail, tension with one hand and nip up the nut with the other hand. I also noticed that all the wiring connections on the elec' system are as dry as a dry thing so plan is to clean em all up when I put the battery back on board tomorrow. Oh.. and the main earth for the engine is sat in the most amazing place... where it gets soaked whenever it rains... hence the furry mount. Tomorrow morning will see all the contacts cleaned and checked and then she will be left to slumber while we party at Zarse Towers. Sunday will see her parked up on the grass outside The Rising Sun, Its Mini Steam engine day. They all chuff up to my local pub from the Sammy Miller Mororbike Museum on their little steam engines. We will be viewing from the roof terrace with legs on and all... To stop her swaying! weather permitting ;D Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Leftie on April 12, 2009, 12:10:13 am LPP,

Not saw the Wall of Death at Le Mans, but have seen one at Oulton Park years ago. The thing I remember is the whole structure shook when you stood on as they raced around the wooden slatted walls. Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Bob U on April 23, 2009, 12:39:36 pm Some of the rides looked rather unsafe too... The wooden track go-carts were most unsafe. The first year I went 6 of us all had a go, one guy decided to use the safety belt attached to the seat to be a little safer. A couple of laps in he was wacked up the arse and found out that the belt may have been attached to the seat but the seat wasn't attached to the cart. Most amusing to see him laying on the track still belted to the seat with every other cart swerving to avoid him. I have a photo somewhere, must dig it out. Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Nordic on April 23, 2009, 02:02:49 pm The old fun fair was good value, but you really had to be in the right mood for it.
We only tried the go karts the once, the same ones are featured on the film Le Mans, thats how old they are and they did not look new then! Once your time was up they put a barrier across the track, caught out a few people. The strippers, well what can you say, about a 100 guys crammed into the back of a lorry to see some dodgy tarts. you really had to be there, it was hot and sweaty is all I can remember! Its bizzare to think that we even thought one was better than the other. Thats the power of beer for you. The fattest lady, my brother had a post card with her on it for years. I expect he still has, then there was aligator boy and a couple of others over the years. I refused to go on the rides on H & S grounds, the rollercoster seemed to be standing on various bits of random wood to make it level, not sure if some of the feet were even touching it. Having been through interesting times it has taken a while to get things moving but I can report that I have been out in her today and all is well, apart from a leaky wheel cylinder and a tyre missing a valve. That will all be sorted this week. All the stickers have been removed and she will be taken for a steam clean during the week and then etched and primed before going on Holiday to somewhere warm to have the topcoats applied. The tired interior will be stripped out along with lots of the soundproofing to save wieght. I will post some pics as soon as there are any major changes... at the moment she is just green and sorry looking. That will soon change ;D PP Oh and with all tyres at the correct pressure she achieved 10mph more on the return trip up the A35 than on the outbound. :D Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Lorry on February 13, 2010, 09:27:46 pm Good effort

Air traffic controllers generally lead to collective nouns such as a "vector" or "pattern" in polite company, but "failed aircrew" in impolite circles.... Not sure on control towers, but perhaps given their lineage, a "bevy" of Bedfords or a "clutch" of Commers (the latter having particualr resonance from RAF Germany days). If its registered as a campervan rather than a commercial, and its being tested at a normal garage, they'll never get it on a lift (or even inside) so won't be able to have a good look underneath. Its bound to pass, as even if it goes to one of these corrupt b@st@rds in the garage trade, he can hardly sell you a set of pads and a new exhaust. But do check the lights Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Lord Pig-Pen on April 07, 2010, 11:47:19 pm Having spent the last 3 months helping out at my friends MOT station I consider myself to be quite up to speed on the ins and outs of this hazardous experience.
She is a Private HGV and comes under the normal Class 4 MOT test, however, due to size and weight she has to be tested at a Class 7 rated station due to width and track. This means going over an HGV test pit rather than on a lift. There is one locally but they are renowned money grabbing C**nts so I am going further afield as a friend of a friend works there and they test all sorts of hideous old horse lorries etc. Having spent the afternoon clambering about underneath and testing the whole lighting system...... fingers crossed!!! The aircraft grade epoxy has stuck like sh*t to a blanket and will be more than ready for flatting next weekend and then its time for the graphics. The electrical system has been fired up (not literally!) and all is good, both charging systems are operational so all thats left is to get the interior finished, wheels painted and new belts and we are almost there. Roll on June ;D I may have missed a few bits out but that would have taken the element of surprise out of things..... The Bedford will be back but not as you knew it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Rusty on May 10, 2010, 12:36:31 pm Just spoken to Stinky Bill and he's up for next weekend as well Rex, he's also thinking of possibly joining you and Pete for the trip down on the Monday. i need to get Trayboy and Chop on board too, so at least Trayboy can brag about the work he's done ;D , not !!!
Another hard weekend ahead, but she's looking good, generator cover and new steps fabricated, new panelling to the fuse box area. As Rex said, paint and graphics time next, refit the roof and rails, side and rear panel, finish interior decoration, refit roof lining and new carpets, fit TV and satellite, new fridge freezer and the list goes on. Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Robspot on June 07, 2010, 01:52:32 pm Spoke to Rex a couple of hours ago and the FormerlyKnownAsPopeButNowCalledSomethingElseAsYetUndecidedMobile is so far suffering from a flat battery and something which can only be called "Ferry Coordination f**k-Up"
They arrived in plenty of time for the 09:30 crossing from Portsmouth, the only trouble being that their ferry left at 08:30 ::) They are currently enjoying far too much kronenbourg on the 09:15 Brittany Pirates crossing to Cherbourg where they will then have to be jump started off the ferry and go shopping for a new battery. Expect the Bedford to roll into BN around 9-10pm tonight, battery permitting Title: Re: Le Mans Popemobile saved for the nation by The Brethren Post by: Brad Zarse on June 07, 2010, 02:39:24 pm Popemobile Update: On the ferry, Stinky Bill is naked. Fortunately he is clean at the moment.
The battery is fooked, and there were major doubts about the height of the vehicle on loading, but its all gone in, and she's on her way - god only knows what will happen when they get off at the other side...... Admittedly I fu**ed up on the ferry departure time as Wooly booked it and I had it in my head that it was 9.30 despite ammending the booking to get Bill on board rather than my mate that had dropped out. She had behaved faultlessly since her return from London, a night time journey in the rain with wipers going all the way and started fine on Monday morning when we left dead on time (but an hour late) and sailed down to Pompey without a hitch. Having got booked on the next crossing as we were literally 5 minutes too late to be let on ours she refused to turn over and had to be jumped. On arrival Bill took the wheel and we decided to go for it non stop.... which worked even if the last 20 miles were on alternator only and without lights in second gear, but we made it and she is now sorted, all set up and we are getting down to a few beers. Regarding other comments.... we were not out on the piss the night before as this was something rather important to me after all the effort we put in to her. Closert on this from me...... we are here and wont be leaving till monday. I'm going to rather enjoy it!!
