Title: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Chris24 on June 27, 2008, 01:49:45 pm Hi,
I am driving down to Twickenham next weekend for the Iron Maiden concert and was looking for a bit of info. The website says that there is resident parking in force for about a mile around the stadium. Is it free parking after a mile because i don't mind a mile or so walk if it saves me forking out money on an offical and over priced car park. Anyone with experience of parking for Twickenham, please let me know my best options. Also I am toying with going into London if i am there early enough via the Tube. Where do i need to catch the tube from, where do i need to head for in the city centre for the main shopping area . And how long would the journey take each way and the approximate cost for a return trip. Any help with tube stations, tube lines and any other info i might need would be appreciated. Thanks Regards Chris Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Bob U on June 27, 2008, 02:49:57 pm Chris. Free parking does start outside of a mile radius but I have found that the natives get a bit a**ey about non residents taking up their parking spaces outside of their houses. I have known them to use cones, crates etc to stop others using spaces.
As you drive in from the M3 and as you aproach Twickenham you will see a pub on your left called The Winning Post. They offer parking for £15, off road and secure, you can also exit the car park at the rear of the pub and miss some of the heavy after gig traffic. It is a 15 minute walk from here to the ground. If you go further towards the ground you will pass Richmond collage on your right, double back at the roundabout and you can park there. Be warned, the pirates were charging £25 the last time I was there and there is usually problems exiting and joining the main drag out. All in all I prefer using The Winning post car park. It's your call whether a Yorkshireman is prepared to pay £15 to park a car;D Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Steve Pyro on June 27, 2008, 02:54:30 pm It's your call whether a Yorkshireman is prepared to pay £15 to park a car;D I think Chris is from Lancashire :o Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Bob U on June 27, 2008, 02:58:59 pm It's all North to me. Red rose? white rose? nothing to get exited about.
Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Chris24 on June 27, 2008, 04:34:58 pm Yes Lancashire, if you don't mind !
No not prepared to pay £15 to park ! The ticket cost me £50 The booking fee £10.50, Fuel is going to set me back another £50 - £60 So I am already at about £110 - £120 for the day out so certainly not prepared to add another £15 to park up. Going to try and arrive around 10 am ish and drive around till i find somewhere for free. Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Steve Pyro on June 27, 2008, 04:37:14 pm Chris, sell the ticket on e-bay, stay at home and then you'll have a cheap day - QED
Iron Maiden are sh*t now anyway ::) Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Fran on June 27, 2008, 04:41:00 pm Going to try and arrive around 10 am ish and drive around till i find somewhere for free. Park thee at Staines station for £6, or thereabouts, take [tek] train to that there Twickenham & save t'hassle. That's what I do. LM Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: nopanic - neil on June 27, 2008, 05:31:16 pm Sorry I'm now having real problems with this!

Chris 24 with his air guitar? ;D At least it won't weigh much when he carries it on the long truge thru the mean back streets of Twickenham. Personally, I'd happily pay £15 to park up at the Winning Post. The fact that it is secure is worth that money alone. How much is a new wing mirror? Or a respray after a keying from the pissed off chav who's house you parked outside? Or kids practicing their BMX on the roof? Also what price to be able to get moving on the long journey back from t'Twickenham to t'Pigeonland rather than sitting in t'crap traffic jams? And how much would I pay NOT to go to Staines? What was that phrase about knowing the cost of everything and the value of nowt? It serves to prove the other adage that inside every Lancastrian there's a Jewish/Scottish Yorkshireman screaming to get out! ;) Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: termietermite on June 28, 2008, 12:34:08 pm It serves to prove the other adage that inside every Lancastrian there's a Jewish/Scottish Yorkshireman screaming to get out! ;) Blimey, is there? I must make a note to get better acquainted with my inner man....Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Robbo SPS on June 29, 2008, 01:29:09 am Get the train. Then ou can get on it. You'll need to be pissed to watch IRON MAIDEN..
The walk from Twickenham station isnt too far. Parking / driving . using a car in london is aweful. either than or park in reading and get the train from there. its a direct route. Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Big G on June 30, 2008, 02:00:24 pm The only problem with the trains is when you have to fight with 30,000 other people to try and get on one after the gig. Oh and be aware that after the concert the police close most of the roads within about a mile of the stadium. We were there at the weekend and passed numerous car parks & sidestreets all queued up with cars not going anywhere because the police had closed all the main exit roads for pedestrians. Well worth parking that mile or so away from the stadium and then have very little traffic to contend with once you get to your car.
Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Nobby Diesel on June 30, 2008, 03:09:00 pm We always go in by train from Windsor. Dirt cheap parking right by the station.
It's the Riverside station, not the one in town. I always find that the queues at the station for the return journey are packed going into London, but no problem going West. Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Doris on June 30, 2008, 03:22:24 pm I'm bit confused by all this Chris. You're not prepared to pay £15 for secure parking but you want to head into London town to go shopping? ???
Dx Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Bob U on June 30, 2008, 03:39:07 pm . We were there at the weekend So was I. Was that good or what? ;D Title: Re: London / Twickenham info needed Post by: Chris24 on June 30, 2008, 10:02:23 pm Not planning on spending anything, as I have no money to spend at the moment, but just thought about looking around as i haven't been into London for probably 20 years !
Not too bothered if it takes me a while to get away as i am only travelling a short distance out to a country area and then kipping in the car over night and driving home on Sunday morning. But since its just me paying for fuel and everything else then if i can save £15 then i will or at least plan to do so. Got to remember i have a trip to Goodwood the following weekend to pay for as well. May give London centre a miss now since its about £8 on the tube. Bit expensive just to look around for 2 hours.
