Title: SEBRING 09
Post by: Lord Pig-Pen on June 22, 2008, 08:10:30 pm
It looks like a number of The Brethren will attend Sebring next year and Lady PP and I plan to fly to Las Vegas after for a few days of depravity.
Would be fun if we could get a few of us there.... Is anyone interested??

Steve Zarse said he would be up for it.

If we organise early it will save some $$$$

Your views??

I'm only prepared to answer once I'm assured that you have all passports/visas/permits in order.

It has to be done, but i have more complicated exit/entry procedures to overcome - the wife.

The brother in law may be the answer, but then I have big sister to comply with as well.

Rex,

Do you have any indications on Cost for this?? I'd dearly love to get out to Sebring, but previously cost has been a real issue for me....

Perhaps someone who has done it before might be so kind as to estimate costings?  I need to see where I need to cut back to afford it...

In summary - im up for it, funds permitting....

I mentioned this to dragonwife a few weeks ago and suggested that it could be combined with a family hol with the girls.
Is there plenty to do nearby? Whats the weather like in march? How far is it from Orlando, space centre, disney land etc. ?

I spend about 1000 euro's this year. That is inclucing flight, renting an RV with 3 others, entrance ticket, camping ticket, beer and food and general spending money. If you go with a small group it becomes less expensive. Cost of beer and food is cheaper compared to the UK or Holland.

Sebring is about an hours drive from Orlando by car, little longer by RV. Easy drive. Closeby of course disneyland (to convince the wife), universal studios, bush gardens in Tampa. The everglades, not to forget kennedy space center and if you are lucky, you might even get to see a space shuttle launch like last march.

If you get your flights at the right time, you should expect to get one for about £300/£350.

Weekend Superticket this year was $100. If you know the right people you can pick these up for about $70. Parking for the a car was $25 IIRC and this entitles you to camp as well. I think RV parking was $50?

The main straights have numbered/reserved trackside RV parking, but the main campgrounds are unmarked so first come first served.

I was fortunate and didn't need to hire a car or book hotels thsi year as I stayed with ATC Greg for a few days before the race and then went staright back to Orlando after the race.

I'm guessing my whole trip only cost about £600 and that included going out for some nice meals with Greg and John and Greg's Fmaily family.

I would highly recommend it. The party is as good as Le Mans, but the racing is so much better. So many areas where there is no catch fencing (lkike Turn 10) where you can stand 10 feet from the track behind a fence that is no higher than your chest! Add to that the open paddock, and the fact you can walkon the grid up until a couple of hours before the race and you pretty much have it!

I'll be there!!!!  :)

Brad. I am doing the same as I did last year. Out Thursday morning back Sunday evening. Hire a cheap car at MCO and pitch up with either Pidge or Turn 10. You only need 2 days off work and not too expensive.

I can't believe the planning for Sebring has stated already

Brad,

I think Mark has pretty much covered what I was going to say.

In real terms I've always thought of Sebring as being cheaper than LM - especially this year! ::)

Additionally I'll be making the trip from NZ next year (all being right and good in the world) so it's going to cost me much more than it's going to cost you meaning that you really have no excuse to not turn up at Turn 10.

What does it cost to hire a RV for a weekend? Do the RV pitches book up fast- do I need to book one now?

The trackside RV pitches are probably sold out already. I believe whoever has it for the year has automatic first dibs on it for the following year. Some people have been on the same pitch at Turn one or the home straight for 50 years!! The ACO could learn a lot from SIR!!!

If you can get one trackside, they are expensive, $400 rings a bell. But you can park an RV in Green Park (which is where Turn 10 is) for the standard $50 and if you get in early enough you can still be near the track!

D might know the cost of the camper as they shared one between four of them.

Beer is cheap at the liquor stores and supermarkets. Just buy a reasonable cooler and ice is plentiful and cheap ($30 for cooler and ice) If you don't want to BBQ everyday there are some nice restaurants only 5 or 10 minutes from the track. With the £ v $ rate at the moment it's so chjeap to go there it's silly!

This year, Doris, Rick, Julian and I were lucky enough to see a night launch of a Space Shuttle from the beach at Titusville. Last year we visited Kennedy Space Centre (well worth it and good value). Obviously you have all the theme parks around, plus airboat rides, Gator parks etc etc.

There's a great crazy golf course just off International Drive, but I'll let Mr Zarse tell you about that, I'd hate to steal his thunder!!  ;D

I know the initial cost of the RV was £150 each.  Not sure what the mileage costs were in the end and not sure how much we spent on fuel either.  We hired from Cruise America.  Booking through their UK site was cheaper than booking through thier US site last year so check both.

No launches planned for March according to the NASA site at the mo.

Keep an eye on the flights on a weekly/monthly basis. Last year I paid £348. If I'd booked three weeks earlier could have got it for £304! Two months earlier than that it was £568!!!

Vary your departure/return dayes too. IIRC, flying back Sunday evening was cheaper (that's what I do! Bear in mind you will land back in the UK the following morning too so may nede to think about getting to work on the morning you land?

Circuit opens on Wednesday morning at 6am and there are cars on track from 8am. It's not like Le Mans where it's just the big boys plus one Classic support race........there is a full card with something like six other classes from open wheelers to Mazda saloons!

If I were ever to be in a position to afford it again, I would definately hire an RV.  The big downside of Sebring to me was the lack of stalls off the main drag which meant that getting just a cup of coffee was virtually impossible without a trek (involving the complicated bridge crossing from Turn 10 if you're over there - which is a must, imo!) and the loos/showers at night were  :-X.  Also, the complete lack of info' about what's going on so do not forget your radio!

The hospitality from Randy and co was second to none and definately something you should do at least once in a lifetime.

Also, roll on the 24 hours of Sebring - that race is just too d*mned short. ;D

An RV's probably a bit more hurricane proof Randy. ;)

I'd love to go again, but 30ks worth of diesel to get to LM's means a slight cost difference for yours truly (and of course I have to budget for two of us...)

I have the green light for Sebring 09, and I cannot wait, well I can actually.

Normally around October/November BA and Virgin have a sale, around £280 from Gatwick, also a small car with fuel can cost as little as £100 for the week.

WoooHooo Sebring

Ah yes Mark! Golf!

It's all come flooding back, the warm memories of that noble and ancient game we all love so; the etiquette, the hazel-shafted mashee niblick, tea in the clubhouse and no spikes in the gentlemen's lounge please. The strange rules and damned cussedness of the whole thing and all those other aspects that make golf such a compelling yet frustrating game.

Mark, Steve Brown and myself were priveledged enough to tee off at probably the finest golf course of it's kind in Florida. The vista on the first hole stretched away into the distance, as we limbered up to take our turn to drive off. I went last, Steve and Mark having played a couple of pretty decent drives, and as I approached the tee box I was initially a bit worried I'd get left behind if I didn't hit a good shot. I need not have worried. My ball flew straight as an arrow down the middle off the fairway, rolling along with a hop and a skip with all the top spin I'd put on it. Then disaster! It bounced and hit the big windmill, but fortunately ricochetted off onto the concrete pirate ship, clipping a plastic crocodile on it's way and then flew straight down the hole. Hole in one!!! The crowd roared their approval, I tell you, they'd never seen anything like it at the Congo River Crazy Golf Course...  ::)

The funniest bit was when Steve tried to putt the ball up a steep ramp. He didn't quite give it enough, the ball stalling a mere couple of inches short of the lip and thus rolling back at increasing speed towards Steve. He initially tried to stop it with his golf bat, or club or whatever that thing with the metal head on the end is called. He missed, so he tried to stamp on the ball. Missed again. It shot past him so he set off in hot pursuit. It raced downhill and down the steps where the queue behind us was waiting patiently. Steve hurtled past them down the stairs all the time stooping down and clutching wildly at the bouncing bomb which somehow managed to stay just out of his flailing grasp. Totally hilarious, Mark and myself collapsed in a heap onto the floor clutching our sides, it took us a good few minutes to recover our composure. I don't know what the Royal and Ancient would have to say about it though.

Time goes by so fast at the track (as I'm sure it does at LeMans) that you want to get there as early as possible.  Wednesday is pretty quiet, good to get the lay of the land and build everything.  You'll miss a good party if your not there by Thursday.

Sorry:-

Changes to US Visa Waiver Programme from August 2008
     Summary

Most British Citizens visiting the US for less than 90 days do not require a visa as they qualify for visa free entry under the US Visa Waiver Programme (US VWP) (see below). However, exclusions apply and you should check whether you qualify well in advance of travelling.  Useful guidance can be found in the Entry Requirements section of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice website and the US Embassy/Department for Homeland Security websites through the following links (please note these are links to external sites and will open in a new browser window):

Foreign Office - US Travel Advice
US Embassy in London
US Department for Homeland Security

If you are not a resident of the UK you will need to contact the US Embassy in your country of residence.
     More information

If you are travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme from early 2009 you must also have Travel Authorisation to the United States. You can receive authorisation by completing the online form at the US Department of Homeland Security  and a decision will normally be made within seconds. Although authorisation will only become compulsory in 2009 you will be able to apply voluntarily from the beginning of August 2008. It is recommended that you do so to familiarise yourself with the new system.

What is Travel Authorisation?
Travel Authorisation is an automated system used to determine the eligibility of visitors for travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). Currently, citizens of countries eligible for the VWP fill in a green form (I-94W) whilst en route to the US. The Travel Authorisation will replace this form at some time in the future, although passengers can apply for Travel Authorisation from the beginning of August 2008 on a voluntary basis. When the Travel Authorisation becomes compulsory passengers will be asked to apply for one no later than 72 hours prior to departure.

Do I need to apply for Travel Authorisation?
Currently it is not compulsory to apply for Travel Authorisation but from the beginning of August 2008 passengers are recommended to apply for one on a voluntary basis. It is expected that Travel Authorisation will become mandatory for all citizens of VWP countries from early 2009.

How do I apply for Travel Authorisation?
Log onto US Department of Homeland Security and complete the online application form. The US Department of Homeland Security recommends that applications be submitted no less than 72 hours prior to travel. In most cases you will receive a response within seconds.

What information is required for Travel Authorisation?
The information required for Travel Authorisation is the same as is currently required by the green visa waiver form (I-94W).
The traveller must provide biographical data including name, date of birth and passport information, as well as travel information such as the flight number and destination address in the United States. The traveller will also be required to answer VWP eligibility yes/no questions regarding communicable diseases, arrests and convictions for certain crimes, and past history of visa refusal among others.

Will I still need to fill in the green visa waiver form (I-94W)?
Until the US authorities withdraw the I-94W you will still need to fill in the green visa waiver form on board the aircraft.

Which countries are part of the visa waiver scheme?
Andorra
Austria
Australia
Belgium
Brunei
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Japan
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Monaco
The Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Portugal
San Marino
Singapore
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom

How far in advance can I apply for Travel Authorisation?
You can apply for Travel Authorisation from the beginning of August 2008. VWP travellers are not required to have specific plans to travel to the United States before applying for Travel Authorisation. The US Department of Homeland Security recommends that Travel Authorisation approval be obtained as soon as a VWP traveller begins to plan a trip to the US and no later than 72 hours before departure.

How long is the Travel Authorisation valid?
Approved Travel Authorisation applications are valid for two years and allow for multiple trips to the US. However, a new Travel Authorisation will have to be obtained if an individual has a new passport within the two-year period or if any answers to the YES/NO questions on the Travel Authorisation application form change within this period.

Do I need Travel Authorisation even if I’m just transiting through the US?
Yes, Travel Authorisation will be compulsory for all travel to the US from early 2009.

My Travel Authorisation has not been authorised. Does this mean I can’t travel?
You cannot travel on the visa waiver scheme without Travel Authorisation. You should contact the US Embassy and enquire about a visa.

Can I apply for Travel Authorisation even if I have no firm plans to visit the US?
Visa Waiver Programme travellers are not required to have specific plans to travel to the US before they apply for a Travel Authorisation.

I am travelling in less than 72 hours. Can I still apply for Travel Authorisation?
In most cases yes, but please check at  US Department of Homeland Security

Can I complete the form in a language other than English?
It is a requirement of the US Department of Homeland Security that the application be completed in English.

Do I still need to fill in my APIS details?
Yes. Travel Authorisation is in addition to the requirement to submit APIS data.

I am not a citizen of a country eligible for the VWP – how does this affect me?
There is no change to the current visa arrangements for citizens of non-visa waiver countries at this time.

Why when the US authorities are not yet enforcing this are you asking your customers to give the data?
From the beginning of August 2008 passengers can apply for Travel Authorisation on a voluntary basis – we are not enforcing this procedure until we are obliged to do so in early 2009.

I am traveling to the US on business. Will I need to apply for a Travel Authorisation?
Most business travellers can travel on the Visa Waiver Programme. Check with the US Embassy if in doubt.

Changes to US Visa Waiver Programme from August 2008

Thanks for pointing this out to me yesterday, but eehrrr.... geez, finding the right form is like searching for a needle in a hay stack! :o Don't know why they just put the link for tourists up there in an obvious place :-\

Anyway, this should be the right form: https://evisaforms.state.gov/ds156.asp

NO NO.  That's a US visa application form Paddy.

You need an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) - part of the revised Visa Waiver Program.

Here's the link to the online form - https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html)

We'll probably be on the flight anyway, however, me and Andy will be sat on our stools propping up the fully stocked luxury bar at the pointy end of the aeroplane and not with the common rancid beer-swilling masses herded into the airborn veal crate down the back, scum that they are. :D

2007, Rick and I drank them out of Lager, White Wine, Red Wine and Sparkling Wine. The lovely cabin assistants went upstairs to raid their supplies for us too! I think several minatures of spirits went missing in action as well.

IIRC, Matt's words were that Rick and I "wobbled" off the plane that year. So he did the only sensible thing.......he took us straight to the Fish on Fire!  ;D

I do remember how you looked when you showed up at the hotel with Rick and Matt, I believe you weren't even able to speak at that time.  :P

So logically, we all went back to the Fish on Fire. ;D

All I remember is Rick saying at the hotel, after they cocked-up the reservations: "I am not going to share a bed with this drunk bastard" ;D

after which we went to the Fish and Fire, then we all wobbled back to the hotel!

If anyone's looking for an Orlando hotel for the Wednesday night prior to the race, Hotwire.com has some decent deals right now.  One in particular is what I believe to be the Comfortsuites Orlando (http://www.comfortsuitesorlando.com/guestsuites.php) at $54 USD, taxes included.  Hotwire is a consolidator, pay-before-you-find-out-where-you're-staying-and-stuff-your-damned-refund kind of site, so buyer beware.  Any questions about this process - ask me.  It's also likely that I'll have some floor space available as I have 2 suites reserved at a different hotel.  It's nowhere near Fish On Fire where we've stayed in the past, unfortunately.

Three months and nine days to go.  :)

I've just filled in my online US visa waiver application form. According to yesterdays Daily Mail, this was to be a lengthy complicated proceedure that was likely to confuse a lot of people and could lead to refused entry for some. Well I'm sorry Daily Mail but it seems you have panicked and over reacted yet again. The proccess took only 5 minutes and couldn't have been easier. For the question "Address whilst in the USA" I simply answered "Sebring International Raceway" A pretty vague address if the bullshit in the DM was to be taken as a true indicator of the form. After a few seconds of submiting my application the answer came back "Authorization Approved"

However, Bob, I think this is merely an authorisation to travel, rather than an admission into the country. The happy-go-lucky guys at the Point of Entry are the one's who decide whether to admit you or not - and they have the ultimate say - and you remove any right to appeal by using the visa waiver program. My brother in law came over a few years ago and stated to the Immigration Officer that he was staying at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - and they would not admit him without a street address and a zip code. I'd be surprised if they have relaxed the rules in recent years, so you might want to have some more complete address for your I-94 in March.

Bob - got your $$$s yet? I got mine from http://www.crowncurrencyexchange.com/ again (In Dec), at just over $1.60 for Feb delivery. They are currently offering $1.46 for March - not sure how that compares.

I just got off the phone to Virgin and he told me that from Jan this year there is an additional form to fill in, it's hereabouts - http://www.esta.us/

If anyone has the time or inclination to work out just what is required, please let me know!! :) (Just having a look - seems to cost $49 with those people - non-government site!!)

Geoff, don't bother with that $49 malarky.

See my post here - http://www.clubarnage.com/forum/index.php?topic=8894.msg124048#msg124048 (http://www.clubarnage.com/forum/index.php?topic=8894.msg124048#msg124048)

Yup, that's the one I filled in on Sunday and got authorised to travel without having to pay an agency. It's so simple even you can do it Geoff ;D

Here's the link to the online form - https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html)

Info here - http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/ (http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/)

First link is dead for me, is it OK for others?

Presume this is additional to the form I filled in on the Virgin web site?

I booked the flight as Geoff, but their web page says the first name has to exactly agree with the passport, which is Geoffrey, otherwise I can't board. They want £30 to change it. This has never been an issue before - should I take a chance?

FYI - Offer code U030089 at http://www.budget.com will get you some decent rates on a rental car right now.  £204.00 on a minivan or a convertible for a week, as an example -  £198 for a luxury or £118 for a putt-putt.

Hi Marius, I'm assuming you're going to turn up at a civilised hour (i.e. in time to spend an agreeable evening with your fellow travellers in the Royal Oak, a pub well known to many CAers over the years). It'll probably take you just over an hour from Dover if the roads are cooperating. I'll PM you road directions, do you have satnav? What time do you need to be at LGW next day?

Title: Re: SEBRING 09
Post by: LangTall on February 14, 2009, 12:34:25 pm
Hi Andy,

I'll be in Dover around 1500 local time, so I guess that leaves us plenty of time to spend in the Royal Oak. ;) I do have satnav, so finding the way won't be too much of a hassle. We'll be flying out on the VS015, which takes of at 12.55, and if I'm not mistaken checkin should be done 3 hours in advance, on the other hand we can also do that online, or on twilight?, so turning up at ten in the morning won't be mandatory.

Looking forward to see you.

Cheers

Marius

What are your plans for when you get poured off the plane at this end, chaps and chapesses?
Does anyone need a lift from MCO to pub/hotel/RV rental facility etc.etc?
I suspect I may need some help in dragging Every's alcohol soaked remains into some poor unsuspecting hosts pick-up truck.
So, what's the skinny?
If you want to post arrival dates/times into Orlando, I will ensure that the welcoming committee is mobilized.

MMM, now that sounds interesting, I really wish this trip could last longer! I think some of the guys are planning on a night at the Fish On Fire, then head to the River Ranch Lodge. I would like to go but need to be back in Orlando by Monday morning to collect the RV.

Our flight gets in at 1820. What time do you recon we would make it to West Palm Beach? And who has been so kind to offer the ride? I looked into hiring a car but thought why would I stay sober for 9 hours!

I will speak with the others and see what they are planning at the moment.

Strange that, I still have some for you too!!

Spoke to Greg last night and this is still his plan!

River Ranch is near Lake Wales. It's something crazy like x,000 acres of hunting/camping ground. The ground in a lot of the main thoroughfaresis primarily made up of sugar sand, so once inside you need a "real" 4x4 or quad bike to get through at low speed. IIRC, it takes something like 20 minutes to half an hour to get from the front gate through to Greg's cabin. Once there, there is no electricity, and you are a fair distance from the nearest road so at night it is pretty much as close to the sound of perfect silence with amazing skies as there is no light pollution to ruin the view.  :)

Of course, during the day there are quad bikes and 4x4's to mess about with while ensuring you are suitably refreshed from the sun!  ;D

No probably not Bob. As you know, I looked in on the way home last time, it appeared absolutely ghastly to my eyes. I've really no idea how you people put up with such unsavoury conditions. You'll find me chatting up the hostys at the on-board bar, nibbling on a plate of lovely lobster or perhaps asleep in my bed. Well you would if you were allowed in there. But you're not.
