Title: Best beer ever
Post by: nickliv on March 26, 2008, 05:50:54 pm
What's the best beer you've ever had, and where did you have it.

Only one post each, so make it count. :P

KEO from Cyprus. Most bars over there only sell it in big 1 and a 1/2 pint bottles for roughly £1.50.

Funny thing is it only tastes good in a bar or next to a pool in Cyprus  ;D ;D ;D

Adnams Broadside, from just up the Suffolk coast at Southwold - available in bottles or good local ale pubs.

Budvar....Anywhere....Boozer 'round here has it on draught, which is nice!
Hoegaarden is a close second (but needs a lime segment in it (lemon is second choice))

Not a big fan of beer in general (prefer the hard stuff) but I always go back to Carlsberg Elephant Beer. (http://www.nationalbartender.co.uk/images/ElephantBeer.jpg)

Another vote for Adnams, but the ordinary bog standard bitter stright from the tap in the local at Hoxne

Don't know about the beer, but found this in a pub the other day just waiting for a Dutchy to turn up   ;)

Although I generally have Bass or and decent Bitter.

The best I have tasted is Brown and Mild. OK it's 2 beers BUT is is one glass, so probably classed as a Cocktail.

Any decent Mild with Manns Brown, shere frigging Nectar.

How the hell can 'Bass' and 'decent bitter' be used in the same sentence - mutually exclusive.

Since moving down to Dorset I have developed a very keen taste for Ringwood 49er, just right for drinking, standing by the fire in the Haven Inn on Mudeford Quay whist it lashes down outside.

Doris, the only thing stopping me upping sticks to NZ is the fecking awful beer. Speights, Mac's and all the rest of the crap, just awful. It's like stepping back thirty years to the worst days of keg bitter/lager in the UK. It comes in different colours, out of different taps, but it all has the great taste of absolutely nothing but fizzy water with massive bubbles in it. Keeps you belching all nigh. Nice.  >:(

And you wouldn't believe how much it costs either; where you could get it we found Guiness at $8nz, about £3.60 a pint.

At least it's possible to find good beer in the States, Yeungling anyone?

Andy, it saddens me that I have to agree with you.  Mostly because I believe NZ to be the best place in the world and I'm sad that they can't yet make a decent beer.  Just as well the wine is fantastic.  Oh, and I've talked my parents into planting cider apple trees in their new orchard.   ;D

I supppose we could just wander round the country now doing "Best beer near here"

If you are in north Herefordshire/south Shropshire don't miss the chance to drink Woods Bitter

Floppin' marvellous and could give Adnams a run, if only it was a good traveller. it aint!

Brewed at Wistanstow, at or near the Plough.

I could tell tales of recovering a recovery truck (yup!) after a lunch on Woods' at the Clive Arms on the A49 on the afternoon that it decided to snow and close Clee Hill...

Maybe at the Stella Bar in a couple or three months..

Funny thing about Bass

on very rare occasions it can be very close to a great sippin' beer, but usually it resembles a delightful mixture of catpiss and sweaty socks gently simmered in an infusion of elderly underpants...

Considering it is a "south midlands" beer it's odd that I had to go to east Anglia to sample my first pint of Specky

In a pub up in the broads

nice

Cannot remember its name (or much else for that matter!) But there is a cracking little pub East of Domfront in a village called Champsecret that we call in enroute to LM that does a local artisan number produced in a little ex pat micro brewery. Its nectar. Highly recommended. A cold leffe on Blue Sud after 2 hours of setting up camp takes some beating too!

Yes, but Morland were bought by Greene King - so now brewed in Bury St Edmunds (East Anglia)

Termie, have you or yours ever tried their special Chistmas brew?

Knocks your head off.

Steve since Morlands have migrated that explains a large lot!

Ffelinfoel Bitter, anyone tried that out of a keg, served from a jug in a little Cardiganshire pub on a hot summer day

I'd never be able to find the pub again but with the out-laws one summer searching their roots, what a find...

....... so now brewed in Bury St Edmunds (East Anglia)

Reminds me of a time many years ago when Tony Prattburn, on the radio, was reading a request from 'Janet', who lives in Bury Street, Edmunds........

Incidentally, GK's Abbott Ale used to be a fine pint, but I've not had any for yonks.  And I would endorse Mr B's view of Adnams - my local regularly has it as his 'guest' beer.  It obviously does travel well, as it's the opposite side of the country to where it's brewed.

More local to me is the Otter brewery (no they don't use the animals - it's located in the Otter Valley in Devon) and I'm rather partial to their 'Beer' (not to be confused with their 'Ale', which is weaker and not so good).

Delboy, that may be The Wonderful Broadside then which is brewed specially tough to allow it to travel better

But if not, and it is indeed "ordinary" Adnams Bitter don't keep it secret I will be paying homage every time I go to the West Country...

Bill I've been acquainted with this pub since I was a child, I grew up at the foot of Brown Clee. What about the Three Tuns in Bishops Castle, they have had their own on site micro brewery for about three hundred years, you must have had that sometime?

my auntie Nell and cousin Caz have been living in the shade of that dollop of rock for a few years now, wossit called? Err yes Ditton dooberry or summat. Nice place

I never made it in drinking mode to Bishops Castle but one of me brothers in laws lives near there in Edgton. Could have knocked my hat off when we ended up in the Plough on Christmas lunchtime one year. Was an interesting ride back up the mountain for Chrissy dinner.

MG Maestro Turbo, quick, not arf!!

Could be high on my "retiring to the country" list over there

The only bright spot on the horizon post LM, is the prospect of a week in Salop, crawling around the pubs and reaquainting myself with Woods, Hobsons, and a pint of Cleric's Cure from said pub is Bishops Castle.  This thread is making me homesick!

The Three Horseshoes at Rattlinghope (Ratchup) is a great haunt if you're ever on that side of the Mynd.

This could be one of "those" threads, everlasting,

When I go visiting the Warwickshire area of the MidgetandSpriteClub I am usually drinking Hobsons...

Thinks, "must get to Bishops Castle again some day, if only to test the Three Tuns"

Bill, there is no finer county in England and if I could think of a way of making a living there I'd move back in a heartbeat. Use to live four miles the other side of Ditt (Ditton Priors).

Didn't know you were a Shroppy Debs, I have to say the Perche is very similar to Shrops IMO. Indeed Charles de Gaulle lived in Shrops during the war and he thought the same. Ludlow's a bit hanky up cuff these  days for my liking. I will try to bring a pound of shropshire bacon from Ryans in Wenlock to LM for you both, providing I get time to get up there. 90%  fat and rind, with a few flecks of meat through the middle, it's the best bacon in the world for sure, you can eat it raw like Parma ham. Yum!

I'd be up for that.  We spend (at least) one weekend every year at a pub in Broome, just outside of Craven Arms.  The pub (the Engine & Tender) has a small campsite behind it.

However, I have to say that all beer in Salop is not good - have you ever tried 'Shropshire Lad' - can't remember the brewery, but the beer is dire.

Yes but I would insist it must be on a weekend where there's hillclimbing at Loton Park!

Title: Re: Best beer ever
Post by: termietermite on March 29, 2008, 05:28:00 pm
I am a Shroppy by adoption - not birth.  The retirement place was a straight choice between the Perche and Salop, and Frogland won, but not by a very big margin. Happily, I have loads of friends up there so there's alway a "hotel" available when I nip back to Blighty.

Delboy: Shropshire Lad is in fact a Woods beer, as mentioned by Perdu, above.

Must get our thinking caps on for a meet then.  An old mate of mine used to do a lot of hill climbing at Loton years ago.  I'll drag him along.

I kinda see what you mean about Shroppy

Our Nellie Carole and Derek have become part of one huge family almost from the moment of arriving there a few years ago

It was Nell's 90th a few weeks ago and the place was heaving with the "natives" in and out  all afternoon

Much as I like many other parts of the country (no I really dont think that EVERYWHERE has gone to the dogs) I would expect it to take a huge time to become accepted as they have and it was likewise for the bro in law up his personal mountain

I like the place big time

Del, I mentioned the "Christmas Bitters" Woods make, frankly as a trained and well seasoned cellarman in my long distant youth, basically most of those beers are made for posers, I wouldn't use 'em to test proof under my leather trousers.

But basic Woods Bitter for Shropshire and Adnams Bitter for eastanglia get my 10/10

August in Shropshire may become a huge draw on my calendar
