My most local (The Three Frogs) has had a refurb and change of management which has made it much more welcoming. The Plough is about to get one which will, I hear, turn it into an eatery only - a Loch Fyne, if the rumour is right.

I'm up for a get together, but not till after my imminent holiday  8) 8) 8). Back on 22 March

Well done Piggers, is that with the oh so affluent WDC?
I'm up for a trek back to the old stomping ground and a bit of payback to young Bradders and being sick on his floor for a change  :P
I think we should organise a south coast charabang(SP), May be we could all stay over at his, It'll be OK, he wont mind........pay back time! ;D

As it's nearing the annual excursion to La Sarthe, I think a charabang with tents etc of course could be a great idea.  The neighbours will think we are a bunch 'rave' goers!!!!

It would get me in the mood anyway.

nice one PP, another CA type being drawn to the bright lights of wokers.
I think the council should look at twinning this place with Le Mans.

So hows the Hang over, Worthy?

A meet would be good, Who can post a vote for dates, I dont know how - yet.

Cheers chaps. I start the Tuesday after Easter so anytime after that will be cool.
Hangover has subsided and I survived my first day of a week doing condition surveys on elderly persons (PC ;)) flats in Aldershot. Yes... all the associated smells were there and the token senior pissartist was on form by the afternoon.

Wokers looks like a nice town, plenty of pubs and grub stops and far less scrotes than I have been used to working in Pompey for the last 18 months!!

Sure I will find them once I start doing my work for the council though ;D

Look forward to a few sherberts and some LM related rubbish talking....

Oh, is there anywhere in the UK twinned with Le Mans??

Bolton in Lancashire is twinned with Le Mans, now how does that work ???

There used to be a 24 hr race in Bolton too !  Quote from The Citizen:-

"I would be grateful if we could express our appreciation of the efforts of Bolton Round Table in staging the recent 24 hour Le Mans Pedal Car Race held in Moss Bank Park.

This is an event unique to Bolton and has a long and successful history.  The event is a real test of character, endurance and ingenuity and I know everyone who ever gets involved in the event both enjoys and gains a benefit from the experience."

Unfortunately on further investigation I see it is running at a circuit called Shennington, near Banbury this year... 28/29 June!

Swearing Jim's firm RHH Franks (FS & Robspot have met him :() have built some of the winning pedal cars used in the Ringwood pedal Grand Prix......

Perhaps CA and DFH could enter the Bolton Event....

I am not volunteering to be a driver, that would be best left to someone like Big H (? it was him who cycled to LM?) and others of a more athletic nature. Maybe Brian and Don from The Brethren?

PP, it's too late this year to arrange a team but how about next year.

I presume we have within our membership;

Designers, Engineers  and fabricators. I feel sure that if CA and DfH band together we could field a 3 car team to take on the best. All for charity of course.

On the other hand, MB has a new circuit. We could next year hold it at MB!! Having seen the racing midgets around the green at Expo the last few years. It was especially interesting after 'unknown!! persons spread a bit of oil on the bend!!!!

This idea brings back memories of the old go-kart days with 'Pram wheels, string steering, no brakes etc and many bruises and broken limbs.

IT HAS TO BE DONE.

Cars must have some bodywork resembling LM cars - old or modern.  They should also be assembled 'on site'.

What do you think.

Have I started something here ;D

Down my way there are all the required trades in my local after work... I will get some pics of the Franks cars soon and post em... Jim is a metal bender (panel beater, not Justin Hawkins) by trade and his lot make helicopter stuff... Yorkie owns an engineering firm that spins, cuts, mills, turns and does everything with metal that I dont know about that leaves a component that makes you think... "how the flcuk did you make that from one of those?". Keith is a fine chippy that could make the body buck, Jim could shape it from Ally (free from work) ;) and spray it to a finish better than that of a real LM car.
The last Ringwood one they built had loads of Titanium bits, all formed from waste jobs..or thats what they told the boss (Jims dad).

Can be arranged if there is enough support... best check out the MB track in june.

And NO mystery oil appearing on any corners... we dont want Don or Brian having a nasty "off" into someones TVR. I know who would come off better ;D

You beat me to it... Was just going to say the same thing.
Best we wait until we have seen the facilities available on MB and then see what the interest is like.

Would be fun if all the CA groups had a car out... just wondering what The Zarse boys would enter. (Perhaps I should re phrase that ;))

Ok, should we change pubs? Possible options:
The Plough - The usual haunt, plenty of room, food if needed
The Three Frogs - recently refurbed, bit nearer town, food available
The Ship - Nearer town, bit small
All the rest in Wokingham may be a bit small or a very young crowd! Maybe Two Poplars??

Is the Two Pops still full of football hooligans?  More importantly...does it still have that pole in the middle of the room?

i haven't been to the 2 pops for years and it was awful then, driving past it does look a bit 'sky sports' for my liking.

Looks like the plough will win out, fine by me as its just up the road and easy for peeps to get to and they know where it is etc etc

Although the frogs has been refurbed i hear it is still not all that.

And as mentioned elsewhere, the plough is probably the best size wise to get all in if there are a good number of people.

I'm just worried Smokie might find it a bit too far away.....

Wokingham is always a bit a hassle to get to at peak times, its a long way up to Bracknell to come back into Wokingham town (but most direct for the Plough).
For work, you can come off at Basingstoke and head up the A33 to Wellingtonia Park, but then head through to Arborfield into town from the South. Or you could come off at Camberly and head in via Crowthorne, they all have their bottle necks, bring a map to the next planning meeting and we could go through the options.

My prefered mix produces no smoke but the delightful aroma of first use of a freshly filled deep fat fryer.
Fine for motorway use and around town, go any heavier on the oil and it stinks!
It also does wonders for top end clatter in old diesels... my 300,000 mile Jetta turbo was 50% quieter when running Pig Pen Performance Product than it was on pump diesel.
Obviously... if anyone from HMRC is reading this... its all lies, I just made it up to impress people and because I saw it on Top Gear ;)

Is that true? I have been told so many different things by so many different people ???

If it is, then wind the mix up to 75% oil and off we go.... just add a a cap full of meths if its a bit lazy ;D

Emissions are way lower than pump fuel so I dont see what the problem is ;)

Just to drag this back on topic - the Plough cloeses next Monday for a 13 week refurb.

Justa  little further along the main road into Wokingham is the Three Frogs, which has recently undergone a refurb and isn't a bad boozer now.

Have they put some soul back into the place? It used to be packed back in the70's and 80's, just completely lost it after it was a Hungry Horse  ::)
You do have a motive though Geoff, it must be at least 3 feet shorter to walk to than the Plough.

Title: Re: Wokinghram meet anyone??
Post by: smokie on March 25, 2008, 02:34:23 pm
You're right Ian, the place had become a dump. It is my closest local and I was always reluctant to walk the extra 3 feet to the Plough, but at times it was essential (e.g. when no-one could be bothered to serve us, or when I tried buying Canada Phil a drink with a Scottish tenner which they refused to take). It has a new manager, and the pub has been opened up internally and, most importantly, is no longer a Hungry Horse so is starting to attract business back.

Most Fridays would be good for me...

Well... first day done in Wokinghram and I have sorted free accomodation in the Guest room in one of the council sheltered blocks in town. Looks like I will be staying up there 2 nights a week to bump up the hours and save on fuel.
Booked Wednesday and Thursday night next week if anyone fancys a beer one of those nights?

If a bigger meet is planned I can book a Friday as long as I have notice. The rooms in the blocks seem rather popular as they are £5.50 a night and you have access to the kitchen too ;D

Haven't been in there since I was barred in 1975 for drinking underage, absolute sods, been going in for months and it was a week before my 18th.

A lunch time tour you may like to take could start at the Hope and Anchor (Stab vest recomended) opposite The Shute end office, the up to the Queens Head on the Terrece, then head into town to The Broad Street Tavern, along and into Peach Street to The Metropolian for quick a game of Crib with Smokie, Then around past the All Saints Church (note the Mile marker opposite the Church) and around to the Ship, then head back into Town to the Victoria, then on to the Redan, Shouldnt bother with the Rose, but stop at the Red Lion for a nice Thi lunch, then cross over to Lloydes bar and the wine bar opposite, back on to Demark Street and on down to the Crispin (an buy a few chemicals if you wish), out of the Crispin over to the Lord Raglan,  then on down to the Dukes Head, and then back to the Molly Miller for a scrap with the Squadies before heading back to the WDC offices for a nice kip. You will have walked about a mile and a bit, jolly good excercise if you keep it in a daily routine.

Sounds like a great way to get to know the town... Think I will leave it until I have got my first week out of the way before I embark on the mission though.  I think 10 pints for lunch would be a bit hard to cover up in the office as there are hardly any staff there so the stench of booze and slurred words would be easily traced!
Perhaps on one of my nights up there ;D
