Title: Well that's the ferry booked!
Post by: redstu on January 18, 2008, 07:56:55 pm
Newhaven _ Dieppe   01:00 on Thursday before the race.Returning on the Monday.

Good price? £102.50 and only a short drive to le Mans.

But will the bar be open?

and are any other CAers likely to be on it?

I looked at that crossing but, my god, it leaves in the middle of the night  :o :o :o We often used this route, when it was run by hoverspeed. A good compromise between short ferry+long drive and long ferry+short(ish) drive.

We're now booked on Speedferries (a maiden voyage for me  :-\), out Wednesday @ 1045, back Monday @1330. All for £72, almost reasonable  :)

Only another 5 months of waiting.......

I'm booked on Speed ferries to:

1045  Mon 9th

2050  Mon 16th

The only thing i'll say paulydee is make sure you get up early on the monday morning /sunday night.

if you miss a Speed ferries boat you could be in for very long wait.

Baron Blanc

(This time in 5 months it will only be 52 weeks til Le Mans)

An early start indeed, but 20:50 was looking a bit late for the home leg. At least we'll miss the traffic....... or maybe not.

Apologies in advance to everyone else in HA we wake up as we bugger off at what seems like the middle of the night!

Fair point,

I am cheating slightly as I live in kent so only about 30 mins from Dover so the later boat is not really a problem.

just means time for a meal in Boulougne watching other Lm 'ers arrive. although the only boat with really cheap tickets was the 2350 but thats just silly :)

I am booked on Newhaven -Dieppe 7am on the Wednesday

Return Le Havre Newhaven 19.30 on Sunday (hope there are no hold ups on the Autoroute!)

The Newhaven route is for us the only cost effective and time efficient option other than the Tunnel, 01:00 is Ok as we can leave Newcastle in the afternoon rather than at 6 in the morning.
I liked the tunnel but this gives us more time and the "excitement" of a ferry!

It's Newhaven-Dieppe for us as well. Out on Wednesday morning at 01:00 return Sunday night at around 23:30ish.

Cost for car + 4 + trailer + cabin both ways is £235.

Brittany Pirates wanted nearer £700 for similar crossings!

The huge advantage of Speedferries is on returning to Dover you dont have a 60 minute queue through Customs.

Another tip for Speedferries - by December most of their 'Basic' price tickets suitable for Le Mans were gone. But if you buy vouchers you can then exchange them for any sailing that has 'Flex' places. For the next few days they have a 6 voucher deal for £26 each.

With a following wind I should also be on the 1045/Wed crossing.

No ferry booked as Team Oldtimer will be leaping on the train (as has become customary of late) BUT did book the Friday and Monday off work the other day.

Let the planning commence.

IIRC, you can change the car quite easily. As long as you don't book for a mini and then want to take a van for no extra charge.

Good price LPP but are you returning from Le Harve?  Dinard and St Malo are great places to stay, but are quite a haul from Le Harve.  Honfleur would be a better bet if you want some civilisation before the return trip home...

Whats the choices??

Anway you can always book the car as "TBA"  as long as you book the right size it'll be ok.

Don't leave it toooo late as the returns tend to get full on some routes on Monday/Sunday Nights

Same for us (SPS -Robbo, on his bike with Speedferries) Great price, taking a Tranie, TR4 and VW Campervan for about £550 with cabins for all. See you in the bar.

I want to show Lady PP some of the sights, as all she has seen of France is Arnage, Le Mans centre and the roads to LM from the ferry at speed. Oh and the inside of the hypermarkets.

May do Honfleur but I have stayed in Dinard loads of times so am rather fond of it. Also the Mont is on the way back and there cant be many things like that in Tasmania!! (Thats where she is from)

Hmm, not strictly the case LPP

Last year I didn't have Bill2s name on the tickets but the girl at their office suggested I just go to the terminal and advise the booking hand at the ferry. I did that and there was no charge, yet another reason to make LD lines my ferry of choice.

Red Tape? huh! a pox on it sirrah.

But I still havent got settled on a day to travel yet, might be Wednesday out Newhaven to Le Havre and home via Le Havre to Pompey...Tuesday return, might be with ya in the bar yet PP

I think it's a case of if you phone up to amend your booking you will be charged,  if you do it at the port when you arrive and it's a "no cost" change, ie same num of pax and same size car, same crossing etc, then they do it there and then, usually free.

Dinard is a fantastic place to stay after the race.  In the days before marriage and kids I used to have much more sedate itinerary involving sailing into St Malo a couple of days before the race and returning a few days after the race after more time in Dinard - bliss.  These days though Mrs Oldtimer doesn't like me to use up too much of the precious holiday allowance (and money) on trips to LM - it holds no fascination for her at all.

After a week of noise, camping and drunkenness it's good o roll up somewhere like Dinard, get a nice hotel with a decent shower, have a couple of cheeky ones outside the bar on the promenade, move over to Davy's Bar on the corner for a couple of their cocktails and home made caramel vodka shots.... then on to one of the many superb and very reasonable restaurants. (Do you remember the one where you cooked your own meat and fish on red hot lumps of granite at your table?) Shame thats gone! :(
Bar Fonda is also good for after dinner as its normally full of all the local totty ;) to glance at through the weary bloodshot I usually possess after a week in a field in the company of likeminded people!!
I took the yanks that camped with us there last year as they offered fuel, hotel and dinner/drinks in exchange for a lift to the ferry. They loved it..... as did I ;D

I too have a soft spot for Dinard, other than the fact that last time I was there someone had a soft spot for my car and reversed into it causing £1500 worth of damage. Needless to say they fu-cked off without leaving driver details.  >:(

Oh and Rex, I don't know if you recall but last year Team Zarse met up with Rusty and about a dozen of The Brethren. We all spent a pleasant four or five hours sat outside a bar on Honfleur Harbour drinking cold beer till the wee small hours. I can't remember if you were there or not, but it had finally stopped raining and was a very nice way to round things off. Whilst the Gimp was quite disappointed at the lack of prostitution in a supposed dockyard, Honfleur gets my vote every time.

Monsieur Pen wasn't with us that evening Mr. Z , he stayed on for continued mirth and merriment being a damned nuisance on the campsite. We're back off to Rouen for this year Andy, there's a couple of Euro games on that evening, so it'll be a touch of footy, some Guinness in the Irish bar no doubt, followed by some of Rouens finest.

Sounds like it was a good night as Mr Zarse does not remember who was present!!! ;D

One year we will do it but not this one. If I feel anything like I did last year on Sunday morning then driving will not be highest on the agenda!!

I blame that all on Bill and The Nuns!!!!!!!!! ;)

Not sure I need to know about the Nuns Rex.  :o The Gimp certainly doesn't following the infamous incident with the contaminated wimple in Chartres cathedral a few years ago.

Rusty, I think we'll try to work in a stop at Rouen too this year as we're probably sailing to/from Dieppe. Footy and the Irish bar sounds good, will you be staying in the "free" Holiday Inn, a la the 04 Classic?

Booking will be made Friday once funds are received.

Despite the divorce threats (nothing new there and quite frankly I become less troubled by that scenario every year) DrS and his Barrel o Monkeys have just handed over gold and silver to that dandy highwayman of the high seas Mr Brittany Turpin. Shorter and sweeter this year, travelling out on the vomit comet Poole to C'berg on Friday morning and returning Sunday, four up in the yellow truck for the princely sum of £276.

Oh hum.

Ah.....memo to self - please read the details of posts before opening mouth.

Also just noticed he has booked the short crossing, whereas I am on Pompey - Le Harvre.  Friends of mine booked the same crossings as me just before Xmas, just a car and 4 people (no caravan), and it came to £460 - albeit he has booked a cabin for the outbound crossing.

Anyway Louis Dreyfus is a very large French company with a wide range of activities, not just a cross channel ferry.

I'd be more worried about SeaFrance personally....

Must round up the funds and get it sorted asap... but hey ho... looking at the end result when we arrive it will be worth it.  ;D
Dont think it will ever hit the silly figures in the £600's it used to... hopefully.

We're probably looking at a late run in, as its only a 70 minutes trip, and parking with a caravan is no fun.  We got caught going down last year, in a french village looking for coffee and coissant .  I had to reverse the caravan about 10 foot up a footpath and then drive off up the pavement.

Why is there nowhere decent en route to stop for breakfast?

Our plan is to stop somewhere once out of LH and have a full fry up in the caravan at the roadside. ;D

........and parking with a caravan is no fun.

With you there, Lorry.  You can get round to the Air Balloon and park up with a 'van - a right sh*t-hole of a pub but the beer isn't (or wasn't) bad.

We got caught going down last year, in a french village looking for coffee and coissant .  I had to reverse the caravan about 10 foot up a footpath and then drive off up the pavement.

Why is there nowhere decent en route to stop for breakfast?

We've been caught out in several places over the years - both parking and the petit dejeuner offered.  Don't bother now - just get to LM, pitch up then relax with a beer.  ;D

Del

My plan for the caravan fry up is mainly to keep the whining of "I'm Hungry" to a minimum. I have two of them with me this year so feeding is not optional ;D

Ferries are a pain this year as LD Lines seem to have reduced the service from Newhaven.  Couldn;t go to Le Mans last year but the year before came back Le Havre to Newhaven, which was an excellent option.

Looks like I'll be doing Dover - Calias this year.

Have you thought about LD lines Dover-Boulogne route? Currently around £45 return car + 2 out Weds back Mon for LM weekend.

Yes but want to come back Sunday evening!  So contemplating LDLines Dover - Boulogne out, and P and O calais-Dover back.

Pondered Norfolk Line to Dunkirk but its an extra 30 minutes in the car each way!
Anyway must book something!
