Title: who had the coolest car.....
Post by: vqdave on July 16, 2007, 08:28:16 pm
inspired by the tags discussion and in particular Dr Sconefinger being called so due to his wheels at college, who else had the coolest car at school college or whenever?

When i was a lad and at 6th form college I had a MK2 Humber Sceptre, wrap round windows fins and red leatherette, i will dig out a picture, but to my eyes that was the coolest car at my school, blew the Nova SR's and all that nonsense out of the water in terms of prestige. And strangely enough the ladies took a fondness to the old barge as well which was a bonus. One of teh cheapest steers i had but still ranks as one of the best.

Cool car? not me!!  ::)

Chrysler Alpine held together with black tape.

Next car was a 2.3 Firenza, loved that motor.

Our little group had a mixture of mk1, 2, 3 Cortina's, Spitfire [later a GT6] and Escorts and Capri's, Christ they were good days. This is why I never critisize the max power/Nova brigade, they're having the same fun with more restrictions than I ever had.

First car I got was my Grandads Morris Marina Coupe. 1.8 automatic not the TC though.
I thought it was fantastic but looking back now 6000 rpm to cruse at 70mph no wonder the gearbox exploded!!!
Then I had a Opel Manta 1.6s them an Ascona Ah memories
the list goes on.SRI, GTI, RS,
Nowadays, well I've sold my Mk1 Escort RS Turbo and bought a VW Sharan TDI as I need it to move my stock around. Just need to sell more Kites and maybe I can get that Mosler I fancy. Not!!

Triumph Vitesse 1600. That's six cylinders adding up to a mere 1600cc. Not sure if it was cool or not but it sure taught me how to get out of a skid.

Ah, College days,

Started of with an Imp, then Imp Sport and graduated up to a beautifull navy blue Spitfire Mk3.  And I was only 22!

Couldn't do that now at that age, imagine the insurance!

My pall had a Jag Mk2 2.4, that was the coolest.

But this was in the carefree days of the early 70's.

My son starts work in September and has already ordered as CC an MX5.  He is only 22!! I just hope PwC agree to it.

Forest Green Mk1 Cortina Estate Deluxe.

Obviously being an estate it did not have the cool rear lights, but because it was such a dark green it was christened 'the hearse'. Great for taking mates and beers to parties, and then sleeping in afterwards.

Lovely green interior.

Fantastic side ways action at a scary 20mph anytime you wanted it.

Unfortunately the car soon required too much work to keep it on the road, so I parked it up in a friends pig sty, alongside two other Mk1s, where it still sits waiting for time and funds.

One day it will roll again, and hopefully make it to LM.

First car was a couple of years after I left school, on the basis that being in London at the time, I didn't need a car to get around.  A move to Germany in 1979 though saw me realise the need for speed through buying a clapped out VW Type 3 Fastback (a bargain sir, a lovely runner and solid everywhere.....not) which lasted all of a couple of months before being supplanted by my first real car - a 1974 red MGB GT.

Mine was a Mk 1 Escort, Daytona yellow, Rostyle wheels and tennis racket headrest (like the Mexico).

Very cool (I thought).

I was upstaged by my friends though, who included a Renault Fuego and a Fiat X1.9 amoungst their number.

I had a cut-and-shut 1972 Beetle in "Lemon" yellow (actually closer to orange than yellow) with a 1500 engine, bucket seats, a 30w (yes 30W!) power amplifier and loads of other stuff.  Sounded fast but wasn't.

First car I bought myself was a 1938 MG TA when I was 19.

That was followed by a TR2, and then a Jag XK150 DHC 3.8, for which I paid the princely sum of £325 (I still have the receipt signed over a twopenny stamp).  Kept me rather poor at 22 years old as it only did 12 mpg around town.  It would probably cost that much a week to insure for someone of that age today!

I wish I still owned all three - would be worth a fortune today   :'( :'(

I got my license just after leaving school. My dad had a couple of cars my brother and I could use when available: an orange 1973 MGB roadster, a white '71 GT, a '78 Jag Double Six and a beige '71 Lancia Fulvia Berlina. Those were the days! Had to buy my own car when I crashed the MGB though. :-\

The 545cc Honda acty van was my first set of wheels, when mum didnt need it.
Progressed to the "Turquoise turd" Austin 1100 (HOT 769L) that grandma gave me when she was told by her doctor not to drive again!
Numerous horrid cars followed, nothing worth a mention until the£175 Jetta diesel that did 200k on basic servicing and cooking oil and managed 4 mots. Snapped its cam belt on the drive while being prepped to sell to a slovakian for £200. Gutted! (but with 290?k on the clock it did well) Its replacement £50 Fiesta 1.1 is doing ok with 12k in 5 months and about 5 gallons of the cheapest oil. Rusty (The Brethren) has seen her and will confirm that it is sh*t, matt reddy pink and never been washed. The Nissan 300c saloon (on the brethren website) and the black "hearse" 300c estate are both in the stables awaiting new mots, tyres etc, but as nissan, being so supportive of their older models, have removed all 300c parts from sale it is unlikely both will make it back on the road. The saloon is rust free and low miles, so more likely she will make the LM trip next year, unless I can find a ZIL.
Back to the thread.... daddy had all the cool sh*t.He goosed mother in his xk120 drophead in the 60s, then... Baby pics of me sat in a big 60's (S2?)Bently, Lambo espada, loads of jags inc doublesix coupe in limeflower, Rover v8's, 3.8 MKII (red with red) (cool to be picked up from school in) . Looked at a Corniche Coupe from jersey(V. low miles and v, sexy) with him when I was about 23ish..... begged him to buy it..... but he bought a jeep cherokee instead.... now its a nissan terrano in gay green. Please advise other fathers of such errors before they make them..... The Cornice could have towed his f**k*ng trailer better than the  nissan and would have looked far cooler at NEW MILTON SAND AND BALLAST! or at LM on Camp Brethren. Fool

"NEW MILTON SAND AND BALLAST"

That was summat I meant to ask you in the bar-on-the-boat!

Who gets the free ballast that gets dumped on the promenade at NM?

Is it free to the first tarmacker that arrives?
or does the council sell it to the first tarmacker that arrives?

Or does it all get dumped back on the gravel patch it splashes out of, by a geezer with a JCB?

New Milton IS the place with Beach Huts buried up to their roofs isnt it?

How IS the special project coming along? :-X

reply to Perdu and Catchpole.

New Milton, in all its Chavness does not have a beach, nor beach huts. Barton on sea (about 5 mins south) has a lovely 20mm+ shingle beach and beach huts where you can see the isle of wight in all its glory, rip tides to remove unwanted kids on under inflated lilos and a wonderful selection of seaweed to view around your feet when braving the icy chill. used condoms and sanitary towels can also be spotted on a clear day. Once in a while you will be lucky enough to see the contents of a local Lymington fishing boats bilge tanks/ toilet float past and you may be treated to them using the boats outside loo if near enough to shore for you to see (Benny Bardell you know what i mean!)
With regard to beach huts, not paid alot of attention, overpriced and full of wee smelling old ladies. I live in a hut in the woods so a waterside one is not needed as I dont have a boat or desire for one.

Serious now! how do I upload pics to here.... my scrap yard owning mate has the coolest princess on his truck ready for crushing. should be seen as it would make MB a better place if saved!!

Well.....my first car was a Beige Vauhall Viva ,which was my fathers cast off......It's yours son.All you have to do is get it through the MOT. £25 quid later and taking into account ,at that time I was only taking home £17.88 a week .....OUCH!!!!....I had a motor. It was great when I finally took off the 'L' plates and the world was mine.
Then a succsession of Dagenham dustbins MK2 Cortina,Mk3 Zephyr 4,Mk3 3 Cortina,Consul.....Then marriage and a Jensen Healey closely followed by a Triumph Stag which I owned for 22 years before selling to a tax exile who took it out to Ireland for restoration.

And of course a Spitfire,Beetle,Mini,Sierrra,Skoda Estelle,Skoda Rapid,Humber"Harry"Sceptre like VQDaves,Alfa GTV 2,5 V6. And of course " Mk1 Renault Espace's

I must admit I tend to live in the past and enjoy working on cars that can be repaired at the roadside and not on a ecu tester!!!

I imagine I'm in my normal position near the bottom of the cool stakes  ;D  Cool is so last year, did nobody tell you  ;)

I had my Dad's cast off 850cc Mini, it was an L plate (1972) and was 15 years old when I got it on my 17th birthday (there you go that's how old I am!).

I loved my mini, although my friend and I used to do 30 miles each way to College in Weymouth and the bloody thing used to stop at some point in either direction and she would have to shove it to the side of the road.  Leave it for 10 minutes and off we'd go again!

It did of course have the obligatory ice cream tub over the distributor cap to enable it to run in the rain  ;D

PS - my Dad has a beach hut as well  ;D  Does that make him cool?  He'll be chuffed!

Sounds like a Rochdale to me.  I remember a magazine article years ago about rebuilding one.  Beautiful end result, but it caught fire - plastic body & magnesium wheels - not good.

I had a Triumph Courier.  Whats that I hear you say - a Triumph Herald van.  Commercial Motor magazine described it as like a sports car.  They clearly didn't get out much.

On reflection the Rover P6 was cooler

Piglet, my mini (no reg' letter!) had a wonderful habit of turning off the lights for no reason - happened a couple of times in the middle of Epping Forest which was a bundle of fun (not!)  It had a Corbeau GT seat and a stubby little gear stick which was touch to reach!  Coo, I though I was no end of a gal'!  Freedom at last - that was the thing.

I fear I may be contesting the uncoolest title.

First car was a bright red Renault 18 GTS.  Although when I got it, it was so old that the bright red had faded quite considerably.  About the only good thing about it was the comfy seats.  Couldn't tell if the suspension was knackered or not as, although it steered like a barge and rolled into the corners like the springs where made of jelly, so did the Renault my dad had at the same time, which was only a year old.

In then end, I nudged a bollard while reversing and most of the offside rear wing fell off (filler held in place by a wire coat hanger bent to mimic the wheel arch).  I couldn't afford to have it repaired and my dad sold it for £50 to a scrap merchant after is sat for so long in his driveway that it left indentations in his tarmac.

My 1st car 5 years ago was a P reg fiesta 1.2 16 valve which cost me £2100 to insure and parked itself up a tree after 6 days of ownership.

Next was a N reg Rover 214 si which was a dream for a year,it had done 108000 miles and it never missed a beat.

Next was a Y reg clio 1.2 16 valve sport which i lowered, put 17 inch alloys on,noisy exhaust and big sound system in the boot. My 1st modified car  ;D

Next was my 1st and last brand new car. A 55 reg Peugeot 206 GTI HDI. Full body kit,17 inch alloys, sound system and a list of problems that never ended. 2 gearboxes,3 turbos,1 front differential,2 steering racks and a list of other crap to stop the wheels falling off. Thank god for the warranty.

And my current car is my 53 plate Audi A3 2.0 sport, got so pissed with the Peugeot i traded it in for £4500 2 months ago and got the car I've wanted for years. Does'nt sound much like a dream car but when insurance costs an arm and 3 legs it will do for the now  ;D

Bill it'll be good to have another fellow CA'er amongst us, if you would like any assistance Lord Pig-Pen and myself will be pleased to help.  We know where all the decent pubs are for one. ;D

Excuse me, OLD people, I think not! My impending arrival in Highcliffe this Friday will lower the average age considerably, Its about time us youngin;s redressed the balance ;D Looking forward to exploring the watering holes with you Peter.
Back to the thread - My first car was a Mk1 Cortina which had been sprayed up in metalic blue with silver lace work on the bonnet and purple scolups along the side, by the previuos owner (made quite a good job of it ???), that got killed off by a goat bolting out of a local church yard.
The coolest car was a a Mk2 2ltr Vitesse with Wolfrace wheels and a Peco exhaust - was'nt mch use a a bird puller though, it spent most of its time in bits.

It was purchased from a little old lady who only drove it on Sundays.  I was a senior in High School and it was 20 years old, which is the age for designation as an antique in the States (cheaper tags).  A fellow classmate rear ended me on the day of graduation and totaled of his car but only put a small dent in the trunk of the Plaza.  We sold it soon after as I had to drive a farther distance to college.

was it one of these? Looks like Christine to me, surprised it didn't rebuild itself and take revenge on your chum who rear ended you.

...on the column.  The turn signal was on the column also which in 1956 was not a factory installation.  It had been owned by a handicaped man, which is why is was a push button transmission.  It had smaller fins....I think these photos might even be the same color as mine?!(http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.forwardlook.net/furyworld/images/pics/plaza/56/4.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.forwardlook.net/furyworld/plazpics.html&h=300&w=400&sz=34&hl=en&start=0&tbnid=mmar3gx5Szx1_M:&tbnh=93&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3D56%2Bplymouth%2Bplaza%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG)(http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.forwardlook.net/furyworld/images/pics/plaza/56/4.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.forwardlook.net/furyworld/plazpics.html&h=300&w=400&sz=34&hl=en&start=0&tbnid=mmar3gx5Szx1_M:&tbnh=93&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3D56%2Bplymouth%2Bplaza%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG)

Hi 'Mom,

Again, nice looking motor.

Excluding general size etc, etc. The seperate body/chassis construction is far stronger than monocoque but heavier. Much like my 'Sixfire'.
