Title: Music!!
Post by: Leftie on July 01, 2007, 06:51:31 pm
I was just wondering what folks listen to when at home or in the car.

Due to my exhaust noise, can't hear anything in the car, even conversation!!

However, at the mo, I'm listening to Santana 'Moonflower' circa 1977 on the laptop at home. Sh*t, 30 yrs ago.

The CD changer in the BMW has packed up or doesn't like playing 'copies' and I don't want to ruin 'originals' in the car.

For about the past 6 months its been Stevie Ray Vaughan. Can't believe I missed him in the past. Probably the best guitarist I've heard.

On ths radio in the car Between 6.30am and 7.00pm, sorry but it is Radio 2 (sad Ba---rd). But I don't mine new music some of it is very good, but I can't stand DJ's who love the sound of there own voice and talk complete drival, instead of playing music. If I have the CD on then it is old heavy rock and the like.

I have the Radio tuned to Radio 1 for the drives to and from work, I find Chris Moyles and Scotts Mills rather comical and helps me stay awake.

If it is down to CD's then it is either Chris Rea or Faithless. Chris Rea's "This is the Road to Hell" seems rather appropriate when driving to a customer site!  ;D

I agree with jjkt15, for spirited driving Santana (greatest hits) hits the button.
Other things I'm listening to at the moment, Al Green (saw him last Thursday at the Royal Albert hall).
But the one I've listened to most this year is KT Tunstall's "Eye to the telescope"

Nice, that covers 4 decades!

For me it's The Traveling Wilbury's at the moment. Also on the mp3 player is the Eagles, Pat Benatar, The Sweet, Bob Dylan. We always start our journey to LM with 'Living After Midnight' Judas Preist.

We always set off to Cat Stevens Lady D'urbanville. Gloomy tune that Brittany Ferries piped into the cabins to get you out of bed a few years ago. It got stuck in our heads that year and there was always someone humming it around camp. It came on the Radio as we pitched up at Donnington last year- the first time we had all been together for over a year- spooky! We took it as a sign and despite its gloomy subject it has become our setting off tune..

I am also a big SRV fan - after listening to Vinnies Vice at DfH it reminded me what I have been missing and  nudged me to dig out the cds again once I got home!!!

F

P.S.  After I got burgled some years ago and all my music was stolen, it was the SRV collection that got replaced first.....together with a couple of videos too!   I love the vid that goes with Superstitious with Stevie Wonder at the end!!

Have a Digital radio (DAB), what a great thing.

So Home, Radio 7, Radio 2, Radio 5 ( perfect sound on DAB) VirginFM.

Love the old comedy on Radio 7, Hancock, Goons, Dads Army, Old Harrys Game etc

Van -  Anything, but LOUD, as my van has no/cr*p sound proofing.

What a surprise, class tastes in music (and comedy)  I shall have to look up Stevie Ray Vaughan, always wondered, but Patti Smith!  Not my choice but one of my friends stalks her, which is always good for a wind up

I've found that Hendrix improves with age, specially Red House.  Start your day with Purple Haze.

Must mention John Mayall, Buddy Whittington IS the finest blues guitarist.

And for comedy, don't forget Derek & Clive

There's a Le Mans link to the La's, the curly haired one who went on to form Cast had a kinky TR6 and had just got back from LM when I got backstage at the Academy in Man'cr in '98. He was quite a petrolhead.

BBC 6 Music at home (coutesy of satellite) plus a bit of Radio 4 (the Archers is a bit addictive).

In the daily car, currently The Who live at the Isle of Wight festival 1970 (turn it up to 11)  ;D

In the cobra (when it's running) 6.6 litres of Pontiac V8 baritone via twin side pieps.

Fork 'n' Knife - somebody else besides Leigh (JPC) and I who are loving Echo & The Bunnymen!!

This year's Le Mans was 'The Killers' for me - 'Smile Like You Mean It' because I smiled from the minute I was at the gate to MB until I had to leave MB (oh! and the DucRider!)

Also, did enjoy lots of Babyshambles and Maximo Park - Queen 'Don't Stop Me Now' always gets me from Super U in Arnage to MB in one piece.

Rick,

At this time of night I prefer the golden amber nectar from north of Hadrians wotsit................

But, correct me if I'm wrong here, the artists and styles of music posted here would suggest to me that the youngest respondent to be about 36/38 yrs old (sorry ladies).

After Santana, it was Deep Purple 'Wish You Were Here' and now it's Pink Floyd 'Meddle'.

Music? All kinds of styles and artists, there s nothing to really point out to. Just drop by for a general music night at Le Mans, and you can get a pretty good picture of what I like. I believe 'broad interest' is the best description. There a just a few things I can't enjoy, and they include R&B, Black metal, death metal and anything else where it'S obvious someone wanted to be a singer, couldn't sing, and startedscreaming in the Mike and thought it was cool.

I've got the latest Manics CD in the car at the mo.  Other than that it tend to be Feeder, Stereophonics (there's a theme here!) and that kind of thing.  Also "The Most Serene Republic", quite big in Canada and my wife's cousin is the lead guitarist.  Virgin Radio at home thanks to the wonders of DAB   ;D

Gigs first:-

First: Genesis at DeMontfort Hall - probably 1975/6

Best: Pink Floyd Dark Side tour at (I think) Trentham Gardens - sometime in the 70s

Worst: Mud at Derby Tech - they were aweful!

Seeing Genesis at Twickenham next weekend (will make it the third time, saw them at the NEC in 1982).

Best album: Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
2nd Best: Selling England by the Pound - Genesis

Currently listening to Maximo Park, Editors and Kooks before that.

I once played Deep Purple Speed King while driving down the M40 - the cassette went out the window when I looked at the speedo and realised it was waaaay over 125!!!!! - middle of the afternoon as well - and I still have my licence (more luck than anything else).

Best Gig            Eagels Farewell 1 Tour  Birmingham Last year

Over the last few years we've made a point of going to see Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra regularly for a boogie and I've recently been scouring the local library for soul music. After reading this thread I'll be seeking SRV's music! I bought Warren Zeavon - Genius, The best of on a whim and that stayed in the car for quite a while.

He is very good, saw him at Liverpool proms x2 and also at Delamere Forest, outdoor amphitheatre- which was great.

Also saw Madness at Delamere, different night, which was funny. As the crowd started throwing plastic beakers of beer, some of the crowd could have played for england cricket team. Suggs made the comment-  you would'nt do this if he was Jools - he  was drenched by the end of the night.

1st gig - Santana Stafford Bingley Hall I think in 1979, awesome, played Moonflower from start to end

Best gig - for sheer excitement was Led Zep at Knebworth 1979, sad to say but I cried when they kicked off with Rock n Roll, for entertainment maybe Peter Gabriels last tour or Dave (thank god for viagra) Lee Roth I think about two years ago, he was awesome at Manchester Apollo

Worst gig - Beach Boys also at Knebworth...walked out after 10 minutes of them.

Best album - impossible to choose, but if I had to it would be The Wall cos its got my fave song on it...Comfortably Numb.

Best Le Mans album - Van Halen Van Halen.

I'm with Termie on this  ;) ;).  Sometimes I think some of you guys are talking a different language    ;D ;D

First gig:  Lonnie Donegan circa mid-late 50's

Best gig:  probably the Isle of Wight pop festival early 70's - Dylan was great there
closely followed by the Beatles (1962) and the Stones in the Park

Worst gig:  Dylan at the Albert Hall.  Walked out with many others just after half time when he started with
                  his 'new' style.

Best Album:  Gotta be Sgt Pepper

Have to admit to listening to R4 or classic fm in the car   :-X :-X

I saw Lonnie Donegan the year before he died, at a festival.  Really brilliant, and he had the good sense to work with a lot of young musicians, rather than trying to recreate the stuff as it had been 40 years before.  Surprisingly good, and not my usual sort of music.  (I'm a finger-in-your-ear girl, if you get my meaning.)  30th visit to the Fairport Convention festival coming up next month - always a great 3 days of beer (good stuff,  not the fizzy cr*p you get over here) and music - almost as good an atmosphere as LM but not quite..  could do with a few cars buzzing round too.... A nice American V8, now that's music. :)

Fingerinthear?

Must mean Termies a SteeleyeSpanner...

One great gig I went to recently was Brum Rocks Live, Bev Bevan, Trevor Burton, Steve Gibbons and Danny King with Laurie Hornsby. Old Brum beat stuff, Traffic, Moodies etcetera, but what made it great for me was when the guys did a ten/fifteen minute memorial to Karl Wayne.

As a kid I grew up at dances where these guys were playing and guaranteed a prime selection of birds that loved 'em.

Them was the days

Oh God now I know I'm too old.

Small world Del. I was there too, part of Desolation Row. Wasn't you that nicked my Honda 90 from the ferry terminal in Pompey was it?

We tried to see if it would float, but it didn't   ;D ;D

Lived in W London at the time - parked the car up somewhere in Pompey and walked to the ferry, via a few public houses that is.  Memory of it is a bit vague now (it was 35+years ago), but we sat outside a pub about 500 yards from the stage and watched/listened to Dylan from there on the last night after dark.  The atmosphere was fantastic.

Wonder if Pilton (sorry - Glastonbury for the non-natives!!) is the same - only a few miles from me but I have never been yet.  Trouble is, it is usually the weekend after LM, and I'm still recovering.

I also went the following year to see Hendrix. His version of our national anthem didn't work anywhere near as well as his Star Spangled Banner did at Woodstock. Still damn good though and a claim to fame, I saw Hendrix.

As a follow on to the missing motor bike. Once, a couple of years ago, when we visited my son who was at Uni in Pompey we decided to have a day on the IOW and as Mrs U was driving I had be trying a few local brews. When we got back to Pompey I asked a ferry terminal chappy If my bike had turned up as it had gone missing from his terminal. He said "I havn't heard anything Sir but I will check. When did it go missing?"

I replied "1970"

Not a titter, not even a smile. Just a "Hhmmmph" and walked away.

I thought it was funny.

Saw Queen (with Freddy) at New Bingley Hall, Stafford back in 197x?

I met Brian May earlier this year at the London Astrofest and mentioned the gig - he said 'was that the one where the taxis were coming over the PA?'

Godd gig, apart from the PA problems!

Saw Chili Peppers last year at Madjeski in Reading. Great gig!

Well I'm shocked and suprised there has been no mention of The mighty Black Lace yet! Are they forgotten? Do the years of happiness they gave you count for nothing? You're a hard bunch! ;D

Agadoo to that my friend.

Confession time - first concert was Bucks Fizz at some dodgy theatre in Cornwall somewhere when I was 10.  It was a holiday treat from my parents, although I did get to stare at Jane for an hour or so.   :)  :)

I wouldn't class them as 'gigs', but my first 2 'concerts' were Maynard Ferguson and Jacques Lousier in about 67/68.  JL played 'jazzed up' Bach. 'king Brilliant. Still listen to him - Aires on a G String - Hamlet advert. 'Spose thats why I smoke cigars although can't stand the Hamlet variety.

I also smoke a pipe when the urge takes me, so 'spose I ought to find the theme music from the St Bruno ad or something!!!

I'm the one with the Brunette. I must admit, the airbrush has done wonders to my complexion though! Or it could be that stuff advertised.... Oil of Wholaid or summat.

With you on the best gig Jem. I had a ticket for Led Zep at Earls Court 1975 but couldn't get a lift when thumbing it on the A1 and missed the gig. Then went to work in Saudi but just had to break my contract and resign when Zep announced the Knebworth gigs in 1979. I lost about £9k in earnings and went both weeks. Just THE most awesome experience I have ever been through. Agree Rock n Roll as a starter was emotional but what about Kashmir? Mindblowing!!!! The gig could be heard in Stevenage I'll have you know!
Zeppelin and bloody proud of it.

Other momentous gigs:
Bon Jovi in Las Vegas
Van Halen, Newcastle City Hall and The Rainbow in Finsbury Park
Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt
Aerosmith, Reading Festival
Tori Amos (I bloody would) Nottingham

I could go on.........and I might!

worst gig:   Siouxie and the Banshees - unutterable sh**te!!!!

Best album:   Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin

1st single:   Green green grass of home, Rockin' Tom Jones

Hey, this has really stirred the old memory. More, more , more

I bought the the original EP of Gerry & The Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone & Jambalaya as the 'A' tracks.  And I still have it.

Unsure if this has been posted before - but it's relevant to this thread, Le Mans and todays date. This is a mechanic on the 63 car. Crank the volume.

I'm another one who lost his gig virginity at Stafford Bingley Hall! Blue Oyster Cult in 1979 (I think?). Completely unmemorable apart from hearing (Don't fear) The Reaper before it was a hit, that and the fact there was only about fifty people there that night!

Our school was dead opposite The Village in Newport High Street and I heard the Sex Pistols do a sound check from outside  :( and also other bands like the Ruts, just before Malcolm Owen drank and heroined himself to death. Pete Docherty truly reminds me of Malcolm and the end will likely be the same.

Thought I'd join in on this one.

First Gig: Gong - Hammersmith Palais circa 1977. Talk about getting high on the atmosphere, no need to roll your own, just breathe in and away you go. Made Yes, Genesis etc. and their other contemporaries seem positively normal.
Worst Gig: The Runaways - The (now sadly gone) Roundhouse. They looked great but the musicianship was appaling.
Best Gig: Thin Lizzy - Gloucester, during the Thunder & Lightning Tour. Lynott really did have some presence and they were *ecking loud, but considerably more melodic that Ted Nugent.
Best album: difficult to say as different days require different moods.

I'll join the club as well, that was a great five days,  also I remember seeing Jethro Tull, The Doors, and The Who there.  We went from the to Insel Fehmarn the following week, which was Hendrix's last gig.

sh*t, I didn't know that. I've been telling people for years that I saw Hendrix's last gig.

A good forum to chat about rock music is www.keno.org It's an American based site that is very serious about rock music. I used to log on and chat quite a bit, but when Pete Townsend was investigated for allegeded child porn on his computer my joking comment was "I bet he wishes he had never written The Kid's are alright" Jesus, you'd have thought I had commited treason. These guys wanted to hang me out to dry. Serious or what. That's what we English do. Laugh in the face of adversity. I havn't been back since, but, if you are into rock music give them a try.

Hardly Pretzel. It's very much alive and reborn better than ever

I'm hoping to see the affore mentioned KT Tunstall there, later in the year.

Best gig's
Queen (three times)
The Police supported by Squeeze (Lewisham Odeon)

worst gig
Me playing drums (as I can't play) in a psuedo punk band at a youth club wearing yeti boots. Thankfully no photos exist as far as I know.

URGENT MESSAGE

Need to update my earlier message when I said the Beach Boys was my worst ever gig.

They were easilly beaten into second to last place for worst gig by Genesis at Old Trafford last night.  They looked like, sounded like, played like a bunch of money grabbing 50 somethings. It was truly truly appalling, hell it was even quiet.

If anyone has any way of passing this onto those that matter at Moneygrabbinggenesishq please do so.  Four tickets face value TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY QUID and   I had to watch them from the far end of the ground up in the clouds.  Why not play 2 nights at the MEN when everyone can see and the sound is good.  The screens were about two seconds ahead of the sound. It was crap crap crap, I nearly left.

I really like Gensis but felt truly let down last night.

I hope that those going to Twickenham tonight have a better time of it.

Rant over.

Jem

Well, I went to Twickenham, the sound was less than superb, and I was a long way back.....

But the performance was superb! How many bands play for 2 1/2 hours without a break!

I could see well enough, and the screens showed details (I had binos as well), the lights were great!

I love Genesis, first saw them in 197-something at DeMontfort.
