Title: This Site getting VERY popular!
Post by: nopanic - neil on June 28, 2007, 09:17:43 pm
Has anybody else notice this, at the bottom of the front page;

Most Online Today: 173. Most Online Ever: 173 (Today at 05:44:43 pm)

Must be all those flags and T shirts at Le Mans this year!

Well, about 3000 people downloaded the guide, with a big "www.clubarnage.com" on the coverpage, that gave us some publicity too

but this didn't double our visitors-peak... May be the counter of the forum software is wrong

Ever heard of Googlebots guys? When a forum is scanned by them, every part they scan is seen as a unique visitor, and adds up to the amount of visitors.

Here's a good example of this from another site I'm a member of where it differentiates between people and 'bots:

However, IMvHO this site deserves to be popular, although a recent member I've foud it's help and advice invaluable and some of the friendships already made will hopefully continue for a long time.

It would seem to me to be better to only count Registered users.    170 is almost double the previous high and three times  the high last May.
It does make it a meaningless number.

You're right about that Tom, but the counting feature is normally an 'as is' feature of the forum software. Not something that can configured by the administrator.

True, the only options are to enable or disable.  The forum spam blockers keep the undesirables at bay.

230 were online yesterday, If it is google bots or something similliar does it mean searches will find this site easier and for more search terms?

Monthly Summary. New Topics. New Posts. New Members. Most Online. Page views.
 July 2007              10                 161            2                 230              19012

Page Views are the number of time someone has rad a page.  The fact they you are reading this has increased the pageviews by 1.

That can't be right, Tom.  NO page views were counted before May 2007, and a lot of people have read a lot of posts before then.

Del, that's because I only turned on the page view stats feature a week ago.

Hmmmm....simple explanation for everything I suppose   ??? ???

Was it giving free wake-up calls on the boat that inspired you to make this momentous change??

My feeling is that there has been a moderate increase in number of new accounts, of which I get notified by email. But nothing stunning.

Just looked at a Wikipedia for googlebots and it says:

"If a webmaster wishes to restrict the information on their site available to a Googlebot, or another well-behaved spider, they can do so with the appropriate directives in a robots.txt file."

Greek to me, but it may be useful to someone.

Well there is an option for the Admins/Moderators to track "Page Views"   In fact the forum looks like it's only had this feature turned on fo the last few days June 29thin fact.  ( guess it is in response to the request for real information about how much bandwidth is being used.)

So I think you'll find I'm right.    All we need is for Steve, Smokie or Dject to verify that.  (It was not Grasscutter).

Yes it's about time I learnt how to read forums.  I didn't read the next page. :)

WRT robots.txt that is only available to someone like Djet.
