Title: CA Flag
Post by: Leftie on June 21, 2007, 09:56:38 pm
Hi all,

OK I never got the lanyards etc, so what, it went to charity(ies).

I would like a proper CA flag, where do I get one from?

Team Red Dragon were surpased this year by our own flagpole,

Flag order from top is:-

1.   Saltire (Scotland),
2.   France,
3,   Y Draigg Goch (Red Dragon - Pays de Galls),
4,   St David, Patron Saint of Wales,
5,   Denmark,
6,   Estonia.

It originally started with '3' at the top!

Bearing in mind LM is a multinational event, are we the most representative? excluding St George which will be hoisted next year.

So please, pretty please, where do I get a CA flag?

Jerry

I do believe we have some left, the somewhat darker version. Tell me and I will bring it to Silverstone LMS, if that's of any use to you.

Does anybody know an address for strong flag poles? We've been buying on ebay, but those are crap. They snap way too ufcking easy! >:( (Okay, I admit nothing was left after the Sebring Storm) :-\

Paddy if you find a flagpole solution, let me know.  We snapped another two this trip, including the one we'd bought the day before!

Paddy,

Thanks for the reply.

LMS seams good but it it may be only a day visit if I cant get a weekend pass (I'll put it down to 'work'!!!!!)

We believe we used HP iron water piping readily available on Expo for ours and then a twig for the top two flags. The sections came in 2m sections with connectors.

An alternative may be a carbon 'fishing pole'! as long as you can stop it collapsing.

An example of the 'not needed' kind is (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa64/jjkt15/P6160165.jpg)

As I'll be going to the Silverstone Classic end of July, can you let me know postage costs etc. I would be happy to pay extra into  CA Charities.

Jerry

I'll ask Ian or 'Welsh_Soup_Dragon' (Si) of TRD as they are both plumbers.

Thanks for the pic Jerry - that was mine   :'( :'(

They are just not strong enough to handle that kind of wind - like the many gazebos that were twisted and flattened.  Trouble is, it's a compromise between strength, portability and weight.

Rick lost one as well - in more ways than one.  First it snapped, then after repairs it was nicked, together with the Canadian Goose   :-[ :-[

A dod of gaffer tape on each joint stops the fishing poles collapsing.

Dod :- more than you need to tape a fly to a pinhead, but less than you need to tape a pikey to a lorrys propshaft.

We had used Gaffa Tape on ours, firstly to stop it snapping, then to stop it being nicked! Neither worked!  >:(

PADDY, just looked online first company :-

Like Rick said, we taped ours up too! >:(

I'll have a look Rick, thanks!

ps. the guys from Turn 10 had a great flag pole, maybe we should contact them...

A windsurfer mast should be substantial enough though, or maybe a length of 40mm dia. polypipe.

Atternatively, a helium balloon, with the flags on the mooring rope?

Or

While on the subject of CA flags, I personally would like a smaller version to (realistically) fly from the outside of the car or caravan whilst on the road.

If anyone else is interested in (say) a 300x200mm size, I would organise a print run.

Great idea.

Will have flashing lights due to it's proximity to the airport?

The higher it is, the more flags!

Interested on the small flags front a couple if these are run.

Agreed with that but still need a 4x3 for pole.

Put my name down for one.

BTW, any sticker left?

When I bought a sail flag the guy was keen to explain it (and the carbon fishing rod/flag poles) work best when they can rotate freely and hence weather vane with the wind.

I have an old 6ft steel tube curtain pole which gets hammered into the ground. Then a cd goes over the spike - and the flag pole goes over the spike and rests on the cd. The cd allows the pole to rotate freely.

Though I dont think my pole is as tall as either of those pics.

And you shouldn't need to bring a generator for the fridge if thunderstorms are about!

On second thoughts..

Bit small, Rick - only 20ft.  I wonder if we bought 3 between us, could we make 2 x 30ft poles  ??? ???

Be warned about that price. We had two of them on us this year, and bought them for €29,- each at a local DIY! :o

Problem at Le Mans was simular (although not as heavy) as Sebring. First rain, then wind. The flags become heavier (up to five times the dry weight), and the wind will drag them down. If you got 20 flags on a rope underneath a balloon, there will be no way the balloon will keep the wet flags up!

Del,

Many thanks for the stickers.

Flag Poles:

OK, if erected correctly, steel/iron 1" dia piping could be raised to 120ft with stays (my Dad's a retired antenna specialist).  Optimum would be 50-60ft with stays midway and top or at 1/3rds. Anchorages could be same location. But downside is spacing of the anchors and transportation.

What will be needed is a pulley at the top for hoisting flags. (It would take at least 1hr to lower and re-erect- has to be don in stages).

This year we used a supplied 'park bench' and lashed it with cable ties and some nylon rope to the concrete framework. But it looked good.

I snapped 2 carbon 30ft poles this year. We managed to bodge one together for the finish (ours was the large soggy blue Gulf flag just to the right of the podium this year) The problem was the weight of a wet flag, I held it up for the last hour of the race and was knackered in the end.
On the subject of flag poles, any idea who had the huge illuminated pole on MB? it was epic - well done that man (or women)!

I believe those were the Dutchies who bring a model track every year! 8)

ps. I believe it's a guy called Bas on this forum ;)

I bought two CA flags last year and they were both stolen within six hours. The flag poles were left though ???
I'd quite like a small one to fit to the car though.

I was fortunate in some ways the the pole snapped with the CA flag on. When I put the pole back together and onto the van I only left the goose on the pole. When the pole was stolen the goose went but atleast I still have my original CA flag. There were only 10 originals made if i remember rightly. The flag toured america after sebring and was returned to me at Le Mans on Thursday hours before the pole snapped.

Robbo can fill you in on that. I believe it was more like 25 pieces. I bought two to help the number of sale go up. Still not sure if I have two now, since Sebring flags have been going forth and back :-\

I agree with Paddy - we had to have 25 minimun to get a reasonable price.

Seems like these are becoming collectors items - I'm going to 'personalise' mine with some indelible ink.

Bob

I searched around 3-4 years ago - they were sold by a group of hippies that went around the festivals in the US, and very difficult to contact.  They were about $25.  Unfortunately I lost all contacts in a PC crash.  I then found a limited selection of them on eBay, but can't find them now.  They are made of jackonite (IIRC) and I used this to search.  They were going for £25 in the UK

Dunstable Kites sold something similar but their website appears to be dead http://www.dunstable-kites.co.uk/

I'm sure I looked at them recently so not sure what is going on and whether they still have their bricks and mortar store?

As you will remember my dad called the bird JackShite. He got the name from Jackite  ;D

http://www.jackite.com/

I will look into a bulk order if people will be interested. The only issue is we may then have to pay import charges. The lady that sent them out to us last time sent them as a gift. If there are 20 or more birds it will look a bit of an odd gift!

Love the way they call them "Wild fowling decoys" and produce one of a bald eagle. I am sure Uncle Sam wouldn't take to kindly to someone blasting their national bird :o
