Title: Butane v Propane Post by: Bob U on May 29, 2007, 01:17:34 pm Can anyone tell me the difference between Butane and Propane gases. I have always used butane (blue cylander) in the past but have aquired a propane (red) cylander.
I know that the fitting for the regulators are different so they are not interchangeable. Will a BBQ and double burner cooker work on either gas? Cheers Bob Title: Re: Butane v Propane Post by: SIMONR on May 29, 2007, 01:58:36 pm I think the main difference is the pressure its stored at. Propane is stored at a higher pressure and has a lower freezing point so the cylinders/regulators work okay in the winter... hopefully not too much of a problem for next month!
Title: Re: Butane v Propane Post by: rcutler on May 29, 2007, 04:53:30 pm Propane(red) burns hotter then Butane(Blue) but Propane(red) cylinders are always smaller and heavier, due to the pressure.
We use Propane(red) during the winter and sometimes in the summer. The biggest difference I think you will find that NO Propane(red) regulators are clip on making them harder to change. We always take a Butane (Blue) 7Kg Cylinder to Le Mans, The equivelent is the 6Kg Propane (Red). Title: Re: Butane v Propane Post by: Bob U on May 29, 2007, 07:02:45 pm Thanks

Easy, A butane cylinder explosion looks like this - (http://www.cdc.gov/elcosh/docs/d0500/d000585/15.jpg) .... and a propane cylinder explosion looks like this - (http://www.wcfd14.org/photos/20061105Propane/20061105-1.jpg) Title: Re: Butane v Propane Post by: Perdu on May 29, 2007, 09:18:12 pm I think that settles that then Steve :o
how bad are hexamine explosions? I'm far too frightened to use either gas now... candles? Is it safe to cook over candles? :) Title: Re: Butane v Propane Post by: alibongo on May 30, 2007, 12:14:57 am Can I refer you to the electric grill thread ;D ;D ;D
