Title: Oh so slow.
Post by: Barry on May 21, 2007, 05:42:32 pm
I don't think it's my computer or ISP, cos it's OK on other forums, but CA seems as quick as a WR on Sunday afternoon.
Anybody else experiencing the same.

Yes, same here Barry.  Must be the annual increased May / June site traffic.

Yep, same here .. all ok on other forums

I really must get on with some work .....

Variable is, I think, an apt word for performance today - sometimes quick, sometimes slow.....

It's not due to any overdue bills is it?  ;) ;D

slow for me too today. I start to worry about the speed once the CA guide is ready, may be we should offer several download locations

Cheers

The server "ping"s fine.  I suspect it's just overloaded with the high activity we get this time of year.

There are only 33 users (including guests) on the site at the moment, and it has been faster than this with larger numbers, so I am not convinced that that is the cause.

A ping response is not always a true guide to a web conection speed. Big difference between a single (or 4 successive) packet and what is generated by a browser request.

Title: Re: Oh so slow.
Post by: Lawnmower Man on May 21, 2007, 07:12:05 pm
No the ping only tells you,  you can get ot the LAN interface.   Nd that he networkk between teh two points is intact.  If the system pings but you get no response from the Web server all you know is that the web server is not responding.

The number of users is not important it's what they are doing.  For example if they searching it has a much bigger impact than just reading a topic.

Without knowing how the webserver and database iare configured one can only guess as to what the problem is.

I doubt it's related to the financial issues.

Maybe we could host it as well, plenty of space and bandwith on our website/ forum, talk to Langtall or Schizo on our forum.

That would be perfect, so we could offer 3 differnt download locations then, all pages looking the same as I would deliver all files (pdf and html) to you:

www.clubarnage.com/caguide
www.lemanszone.de/caguide
www.drinkingforholland/caguide

Let me know if this works out for you

Last thing I heard we were way over half the 1 gig space we have, and that was before the update (with the added English section). My thoughts are the CA site is pretty big with the ability to upload pics...

No problem on that Werner, just keep me informed where to download it to put it up our webspace.

Pat, if I drop some of the stuff in your map on the website, we'll have some more space. ;)

Great, so it's 4 download-locations now.

In terms of webspace there is not so much needed:

2 small HTML-Pages, the full guide is estimated to have 15 mb file size, plus another 15 mb for the guide split in smaller packages, so altogether it takes about 30 mb harddisk-space. I will zip everything and mail it to you on 6th June

Took me quite a while to access CA now, could not reach the site in the last 60 minutes or so....

I'll put it up on my blueyonder space tomorrow when i'm a bit more sober  so it'll have 5 locations.

I was half cut....

'If you sprinkle whisky onto grass seed, does the lawn come up half cut??'  (With thanks to 'Round the Horn')

Seriously, I'm a bit concerned about the continuing poor response on CA.

If I had never heard of CA and saw the shirts/flags/cards/flyers promoting CA at LM, and on return to blighty to try out the site, I would throw the URL away if I got the response times I am getting sometimes.

I don't know what the problems are, nor if there any short or long-term solutions, but I feel that something has to be done.

Del

Is it me or is the entire internet clogged up at present?  Nearly every site I look at is like wading through treacle at the moment.  CA's pretty good compared with some stuff I'm trying to access - I haven't been able to access photobucket all day.  Is there an inordinate amount of SPAM floating about or something?

It got so slow it stopped!!

Couldn't log in for about 8 hours yesterday.

Worried that someone needed 50p for the metre. ;)

Patience is a virtue... watching paint dry is not fun. Good for insomnia though.

Yesterday was, unfortunately, very slow.

Not trying to bitch but it might be a good idea to look at some of the option.

Is this perhaps down to the historical messages? Perhaps it is time to clean it up.

This is NOT a complaint, I am taking tablets for that...

Only 8 CAers & 6 guests and it is as slow as watching paint dry, but other sites are as quick as a march hare.......... why ..  at times which are inconsistant to others online at different times and geographic locations.
I am only on 2mb Bb, should not make a difference

Termie and I met Grand Fromnage on Saturday for a very useful discussion, about which you will no doubt hear separately.

He explained why the performance is so variable, so for you computer buffs: CA owns the server, which is now a few years old. It's a Dell server, 1U size and sits in a rack in Copenhagen.

The forum traffic is causing memory to max out, which in turn causes memory to be paged to disk. The disk is big enough, but this just slows down the system. So, at least, it needs more memory. DJet (our tech guru) has tried various memory modules but none of them worked properly.

GF had/has plans to replace the server this year. It would be a better spec, including a 10,000 rpm drive and more memory. So this will go into the pot with all the other discussions and plans.

Just on that topic, we currently have unlimited bandwidth. While some of the hosting services offer seemingly unlimited (or at least very high) bandwidth, apparently it really peaks at this time of year. GF is going to supply some stats about page hits etc. This will enable us to look around to see whether there is a better deal to be had. However we should bear in mind that there are other ideas for change which will hopefully increase traffic to the site (and probably consequently to the forum) so the unlimited bandwidth may become a necessity.

If anyone can get a deal on proper servers, please PM me. I can get something like 5% off Dell.

What minimum spec are you looking for?

Any specific reason why we need to buy a server? IMHO renting a dedicated server with unlimited bandwidth could be also an option, e.g. see http://www.micfo.com/dedicated-servers-web-hosting.html -just an example which I googled, there are plenty of other companies. But as robspot pointed out, we need a spec first - How much RAM, HD, which CPU...

I have to agree with Werner on this.  I personaly looked at puting a server a server in to a Co-Lo site and it't more expensive.  Basicly they rent a server for say £20 pm but to put your server in there was £30.

The bandwidth thing has two parts.

One is speed.  The current server will most likely have a 100Mb LAN cand  So it can transmit about 10 Megabytes per second.

The other is the amount of data.  This is a poptential limit on the Volume in Gigabytes you can transmit in and out.

What we really need to have are the volumes.    Unlimited bandwidth for say £50  is a waste of money if your only using say 10Gig and you could but that for say £10 per month.

You need to watch out for FUD.

t.

As mentioned, GF promised to send me stats from the server. He said it only takes a small amount of disk space. I execpt he's busy on other stuff right now so nothing much will happen until after LM. But the points above are noted, and I'll come back to this thread when I have some answers.
